Nvidia Titan V

Don't be, the xx80 and xx70 will likely be released 1st quarter of next year. Rumors have been rampant for a while. That a Volta based GPU is now available makes it more likely.

It is starting to be mentioned a lot that AMD doesn't seem to have the money to catch Nvidia. That Nvidia has tech that is as much as another 30% faster than this years gpu's and can't release it as they would just be competing with themselves does not bode well for AMD's gpu line. The price gouging has already been going on for some time (Nvidia made over 4billion this year). Coupled with AMD losing their chief gpu architect, things will be interesting in 2018. If there is an up side, it's that he went to Intel to help them with a new effort to create imbedded and discrete gpus. Let's hope it goes better than Intel's previous forays into the arena because we may need another player sooner than later to keep Nvidia in check.

Realistically, NVidia has been competing largely against themselves for some time now. Volta has be slowed due to issues, but it has been ready for a while. Had Vega been stronger on release and able to keep up with the demand it is likely that we would have seen Volta released by now.

I would be very surprised if nvidia doesn't launch a Geforce series on this range now in the very early new year.
And by that I mean a <$1000 card.
If not already at CES in January, at least before March.

Anyhoo, I think I'm going to have to be ok with the 1080ti for a bit more, the fund are simply not there.
I'm sure NVidia will release cheaper Volta-based video cards, but it's unlikely that they will have 12GB of HBM2 memory, which is one of the things which really interests me. Memory which is integrated onto the interposer is noticeably faster than standard memory chips, even the "already announced"* GDDR6 memory which is due in 2018. It's possible that the most-expensive variants may have 8GB of HBM2 memory, if so, I'll probably get one of those cards, if it's within my budget.

Oh, I know, and I agree completely, and also why I'm not super stoked and "shouting take my money" for the upcoming series, it's going to be better yes, but not so good Nvidia isn't going to sell these cards to those with more money than sense.

I simply don't have Titan V money unless the Euro Jackpot flies in next week, which would be a miracle\mathematical impossibility since I'm not even buying tickets.

We are already seeing games use more than 8GB of VRAM, so I don't think we will actually see 8GB HBM2 memory cards, although just guessing. But Personally, 12GB is honestly something I found surprisingly low, and doubly so for AI work and other high level computiations, one of the reasons why weather is still calculated on CPU's still is exactly that Gpu's still doesn't have enough RAM on them, but then again probably why the titan V isn't $5000.

Anyhoo, even for gaming this day and age I think I woulnd't pay a premium to get less RAM.

And when it's all said and done, I still think ED is so poorly optimised that regardless of even with this Titan V, running a full wing of friends in a HAZ res you would still get throttled to 45fps in VR.

I know about the continual advancement of technology, I waited for the GTX1080 to be available in laptops before buying a full mongo gaming laptop (£3100), and I waited for the third party cards so I could buy an asus strix GTX1080ti, and that the 1080ti in my desktop still rocks; but its an abnormally large leap in performance from titan pascal to titan volta... Its almost a full order of magnitude in one generation!

yeah but its $3k!

lets wait and see what the real consumer cards bring to the table. imo your card will be good for some time yet. i am due an upgrade, i will be buying a 4K gaming TV in the next 3 or 4 months and my trusty black friday 2014 GTX980 wont cope (its been a hell of good a purchase however). My hope is the GTX1180 / 2080 will be out by the end of march.

I always say skip at least 1 generation when upgrading (personally i try to upgrade when i can get a 100% increase in performance). For me the next gen will manage this with ease... for you however imo you want to wait at least till the next gen after volta to get close to that.

Prior information suggest the next gen 1080ti is/will be around 30/35% faster. The die is HUGE, but luckily still only a 250W TDW so I expect good things at the £1k mark.

One reason to have the extra ram would be to increase the amount of super-sampling, which would greatly reduce the jaggies. I'd love to be able to run 4x SS; 2x in-game and an additional 2x in the NVidia drivers (or in VR controls). The Titan V might actually be able to do that with a reasonable framerate. I'm currently using a 980Ti, which is underpowered for a Pimax 8K.

I'm sorely tempted to blow my end-of-year bonus on the Titan V, but my wife would, well, not "kill" me, but would be most unhappy. :D
