Planetary Tech Improvements: 24hr stream

BenevolentSnappyBatPJSalt

This was just shown on the 24hr stream. Headphones for a little commentary by DB. And yes, it's just a short clip and it's brown :)

Oh yes, this looks good. A lot better than the boring beige rocks we have today. I’m excited for what 2018 may bring. I hope this doesn’t mean I need a new gpu, money is tight.

It shouldn't as it needs to work on the Xbox and ps4.

But yeah, that planet looked amazing, and in conjunction with what we saw at the expo, planets are gonna look superb.

The surface textures where already good, hopefully they have improved those too.

Yeah looks good but I'm much more interested about the look of it when sitting on its surface. We already have amazing looking planets from orbital view that we unfortunately can't land on (yet). So did they show any close-ups?

Btw, I'm pretty sure I've already seen this planet in the OP in an older life stream...

Different planet as far as I know. It wasn't shown at the Expo.

I very rarely see anyone raise my complaint about planetary surfaces...

I'm putting this in spoiler tags because it cannot be UNseen once you've recognised it and is going to be a slightly immersion breaking thought that you have whenever you are on a planet.

There are no overhangs anywhere in the galaxy. Everything goes straight up from a planets surface or tapers to a point or plateau. If you wanted to get out of the rain ( I know there are no atmospheres) you would not be able to, every sing;e square mm of every planet is exposed. You can ALWAYS look straight up and see space. Never rock or other natural formation. So there you have it. It's so conspicuous, one must imagine that it is a limitation of the proc gen engine. I just hope that surface variation hasn't been forgotten, caves, cliffs, even just jutty rocks.

Sure? I thought it was this one (wait a few seconds or spool to 6:27):

This is the stuff that currently steals my sleep... [woah]

Edit:
You're right, not exactly the same planet.

Thought I was, as I had already checked ;). Looking very nice and really looking forward to Q1.

It's doubtful you will be many overhangs as most are caused by erosion, but a bit more variety would be nice though.

I think caves and rock formations are caused by volcanic and seismic activity (we have volcanic planets, and any planet with a molten core will have seismic activity). Canyons, dry river beds and all kinds of things we already have are caused by erosion.
