Fresh Win10 install?

Had problems with either Win10 Fall update, Nvidia 388.59, the ED 2.4.09 update or Oculus 2.0. The game was a stuttering mess, completely unplayable with low frames despite not maxing out of the CPU or GPU.

System specs 6600k (4.6ghz), 980 ti, SSD, 16gb DDR4 etc. Normally fine in VR.

I checked to make sure the MS game settings in Win10 were all disabled as had read this could have a negative impact. I tried to roll back the nvidia drivers to previous working ones but they would not install due to the Win10 update. Tried to roll back the Win10 update and it messed my Win10 install up completely and I could not repair it.

Long story short. I re-installed Win10, oculus home, ED and nividia drivers. Stutter now gone despite being on exactly the same versions (Win10 1709, ED 2.4.09, Nvidia 388.59 and Oculus 2.0).

Also and more intestingly I swear the performance and visuals are better. I used to also get a little stutter when looking left and right with the pop up menus, now it is completely smooth. Also the readability of the text seems much better. The colours seem different somehow. The default orange looks like a lighter shade despite the same HUD and gamma settings. Very odd but I like it! [noob]

Re-installing everything was a pain but just thought I'd share. Probably won't have the same impact for everyone but I thought it was an interesting finding. If you are bored over Xmas...

I need to take that road soon, my windows 10 keeps pushing an update it can’t install due to wrong hdd setting (non uefi). Its crazy, because it forces the update, but then it can’t install it, and keep bothering me about it. Ah well, Im delaying this as long as I can, because I know its a lot of trouble and Ill loose something in the process. Good to hear it worked well for you.

Windows 10 is a mess

It's Win 8.1 on steroids

Microsoft is trying to force everyone into buying and installing all programs through the App Store.

Someone with the brains to write a desktop OS that is similar to Win 7 and can play all PC games and legacy applications will be the worlds next multi-billionaire.

It's like trying to force your desktop into becoming nothing more than a big cell phone.

I'd pay several hundred for a secure desktop OS that didn't phone home with internal built-in spyware and could run all Windows games and legacy applications.

As a long time Linux user, who only installed Windows to play games, I'm really irritated by this "re-install Windows" solution that I hear more and more these days. It's utterly unacceptable that the only OS with broad compatibility would allow itself to be borked so quickly and easily as to require a full re-install. I'm with GJ51 ... we need a new alternative.

Sorry to see some of you have problems with win10. Personally I love win10!
I've still had'nt had a single issue with it!

Completely agree. Glad my game works again though! :)

I guess the real issue is in what you said "the only OS with broad comparability". The lack of true competition allows them to get away with it. Competition drives progress!

Might have to do this too.

Dirt rally has massive stutter for half a second every 30 seconds to a minute. If I turn off the ethernet adapter it doesn't happen.

I suspect origin, uplay, blizzard, epic, fusion360 or some other app has installed something that runs in the background that causes it, but turns off if it can't phone home to it's master. Though it could also be windows itself, xbox app, steam or oculus.

Call me when you get Windows Media Center installed...

If you want to run Windows Media Center on 10 you can..... I have been doing so for a couple of years.

Lack of competition? Linux, Mac OS X, Chrome OS there is plenty of competition. The problem (if there is a problem) is that none of the competition are interested in creating an operating system that is compatible with virtually any component that you throw at it while still providing high levels of performance and usability.

Linux will always be plagued with driver availability, under the hood complexities and inconsistent UI. It is a server OS and a hobbyist desktop OS. The prophecy of first UNIX and then LINUX taking over the desktop have never and will never come to pass.

Apple Mac... welcome to the world of limited hardware choices and high prices, with poor support for gaming.

Chromebooks and Chrome OS another Windows PC killer, suitable for lightweight web use and promises of a great and glorious future.

The point is that while Windows has many flaws, it persistent ability to provide compatibility with applications going back to Windows 3.0 and even further with DOS while also moving into the future is both it strength and its weakness. The fact that it can be installed without even a second thought on any combination of hardware that users throw at it is a marvel.

The future of computing is operating systems as walled gardens, data gathering billboards, and it is the end users who flock to these simpler environments that drive the market and direction of future computing.

Meanwhile Microsoft battles on taking the same old knocks and criticisms about its current version of Windows and how the last version or the version before that was the high point.

I have seen, used and installed what came before Windows, they where not good times, and I have seen what many would propose to replace Windows and they don't look like good times either.

But pause for a moment and think what we would have without Windows and perhaps actually applaud it and good ole Microsoft.

Hip hip hooray...

At some point I should probably reinstall windows to tidy up 18 months of bloat. I’m just not looking forward to doing it, that’s all.

I think the point was that there was no OS competition with ‘broad compatibility’ not that there is no other OS.

Wide hardware compatibility is Windows brilliance and likely also it’s main limiting factor.

Isn’t the limiting factor here directX. Elite is written with directX which is windows only. Is there a framework that is multi os?

Unity or Unreal ...

Clarification: It’s their own engine, but it sits on directX

Are there any websites that talk you through the process for us less technically-minded types?

Whenever I reinstall an OS I'm always caught out by the number of updates

Are you talking about how, after a reinstall, you need several successive updates to get you back to where you were before the reinstall? To my knowledge they haven't changed this. That's because the version you're reinstalling has been static on a disc or flash drive for all of that time. I'm not aware of any websites, though I'm guessing an internet search would help you. The big time-consuming part of it all is making sure you back up everything you care about and, after the reinstall, taking the time to get your configuration back to where it was. I wouldn't be surprised if there are apps nowadays that snapshot settings but I'm still old-school.

This covers the basics:

Reinstalls are a bit less painful than they used to be, but resetting a PC only takes you so far. I'd still recommend a data backup, another data backup, extract the drive and secure erase it on another machine, and a fresh install of Windows from a previously prepared USB drive.

I've just done a complete wipe and install of Win 10.

Downloaded the Win 10 media creation tool, exported and printed off my licence key by using a powershell script and then went for it.

Only stumbling block was after I wiped my partition it wouldn't let me install because of a MBR and GPT issue. Quick Google and I had to delete the other two small partitions on the drive and I was ready to go.

Very quick and easy and was pretty much up to date with updates. No spending 4 hours downloading updates like what XP and 7 was like.

Couple of hours and I was back up and running. helped that I backed up my bookmarks and sync my passwords in Chrome and all my data is stored on another drive/NAS.

I had exactly the same issue when doing my reinstall!

Was performance any better in ED for you afterwards?
