FD, please fix the chrome paint jobs

Last year's buyers got the new horrific "chromed" paint jobs for free, but new buyers do not get the original chrome versions which to put it mildly; sucks big time. Especially since the new chromed versions are simply terrible.

Could you please make a decent chrome version like you originally had before the first nerf and now a second nerf. They really look horrific, even like someone used MS paint with all the splotches and artifacts.

I plan on buying some for a second account, and it will be fewer without the original styles for sure.

While i actually respect frontiers 'my decision my responsibility' hardline approach to design, this is cosmetic in a largely single player game, isn't free so gives us some right to have an opinion, and simply the new ones are not as good.

Just throwing my 2 credits in here- the Chromed release looks like either Brushed Aluminum or Stainless Steel (take your pick).

It's not very reflective at all, in fact screenshots with starlight lighting them make it look like a "matte" finish. I agree it does need to be looked at. (please?)

:)

Is it just me or did the old versions disappear ? I bought the Gold Anaconda last year (yeah, whatever, bite me :p) and got the Golden one for free, but last time I checked, the Gold one was gone.

I wonder what the reasoning behind changing them was rather than just adding another set of skins. Was it just that they think these look better or does it relate to performance (maybe the shinier ones are a bit more taxing) or something else?

Not a huge fan of the chrome skins anyways. Got a few of the old ones a while back but don't use them really so not likely to buy these ones at any rate. Looking at a few of the screenshots shared they don't look fantastic, but I wouldn't say they are horrific either.

Actually I generally prefer an aluminum look to a chrome one.
Only Frontier's naming is a little misleading here. Should have just named it Brushed or so in the first place.
But frankly it was the same already with the old Chrome paintjobs. They just appear a little less blurry reflecting.
Actual Chrome is like a mirror and I've never seen my starport reflecting in my Corvette's Chrome paint...
I guess it wouldn't really look good anyway if it actually behaved like chrome. The ships' shapes would barely be discernible and it would all be pretty confusing inside starports, while out in space ships would appear almost invisible most of the time.

The original chrome was closer to brushed aluminum; which is pretty much what most were expecting. Actual chrome, is super shiny, and neither the first change (which wasn't needed) or the second generation isn't chrome, either.

Brushed aluminium, or actual mirror finish chrome; these are expected outcomes. The original should have been left alone, and a mirror finish chrome added. Job done. Frontier sometimes tries to find the most complicated way to resolve a thing, rather than the simplest and most likely to actually respond to concerns.

I'm a simple man. I just want a "chromed" paint job for my Python.

...

More on point though: On the one hand these are optional cosmetics that you don't have to buy if you don't want to. On the other, people are paying significant real money for these, in terms of relevant game market costs. For a similar price, I could get a few cars in a car bonus pack in Project Cars 2, each with their own "liveries," for example.*

In general, I think Frontier is actually a lot more "consumer-friendly" than many other publishers/developers, and with them being a relatively independent and small team in comparison to some, I personally don't mind paying a bit more of a premium for these sort of cosmetic items.

As always with this sort of stuff, buyer beware. Do your research first and find out whether these cosmetics are something you actually want to spend real-world money on or not. People here are generally pleased to post pictures of their ships, so that should help somewhat at least.

The originals should still be in your livery, they're just not available on the store any longer.

Since the engine can clearly do a proper reflective gold or chrome - I suspect there is a "Head of Marketing" in FDev who has put the brakes on and worked out how to squeeze the maximum money from the player base, creating a healthy revenue stream over several years.

That is, deliberately ask the developers to go for a brushed look, people will still buy (and they are), and then in a years time, release a more reflective version, repeat the year after - until we eventually have a fully reflective version and FDev have squeezed maximum cash from the player base.

Of course, I realise this is horribly cynical of me. More worryingly - I still pay... I know I'm being had, but cannot help myself.

Well, I think you may be on to something here, of course, but are likewise being a bit too pessimistic. As I've pointed out already, these paint jobs are definitely selling for a premium, so it is just as much the responsibility of the buyer to sort out what they want and are willing to pay for.

Personally, a "chromed" Python would suit my ship rather well; a mirror surface, not quite so much. I wouldn't be buying a mirrored surface later on, so, for me at least, and knowing what I'm looking for and looking at, I think I have at least a semi-rational and content outlook on things.

Presumably, any purchase of these sort of cosmetics are a fair boost to Frontier's coffers. I don't think their intent is too milk us for all that we're worth and leave us unsatisfied for having done so. A properly competent and smart marketing strategy would take all this into consideration, and I don't think Frontier's intent is to sell out and move shop for short-term profits.

Completely agreed here. There's always someone out there who's on the "bleeding edge" with buying things- or just have immense disposable incomes!

I'm very careful in researching things before I buy, especially when it comes to software. But having said that, "deceptive marketing" has increased over the years, especially in the gaming industry.

Full featured games years after the initial release becoming stripped down into DLC microtransaction packages, have seemingly become status quo of the gaming industry. (Can you say... EA?)

Now EA doesn't even bother to hide it, they just release games stripped down and sell the "additional" content as a "lifetime pass" blatantly.

At least FD hasn't done the same with Store products, but I'm very aware that it could change at any moment.

After all...

I noticed a big difference between the "Chrome Paint Job" and "Chromed"....i must say the first ones, the original, a.k.a "Chrome Paint Job" where much higher quality, shinier and frankly i consider them much more impressive...the " Chromed" are so dull.....

Yep totally agree with everyone that it just looks like steel straight out of the sheet metal area in the factory before going into the paint department. I was thinking of getting some, but then looked at the versions out (even for the SRV) and thought these just aren't exciting at all. Saves me money this Christmas I guess...

I think Frontier have made an honest mistake with the new chromed finish. Therefore, I'm submitting a bug report.

You see, this is how the mistake/bug was probably made...

I recollect people complaining about the old gold paint jobs. However, the new gold paint jobs look much better. They look more golden because they are less reflective.

What the graphical artist did was apply the same changes they made to the gold (which I expect passed Quality Assessment first time) to the chrome too. The problem is that it doesn't work - there is an important difference. The gold effect works because you want to see a gold colour. The chrome effect works because you want to see a reflection.

Do you see how they made the error?! The 'brushed' finish enhances the gold effect but diminishes the chrome reflection.

As I say, I have submitted this as a bug report.
