Horizons I got mugged

I was on my way to donate the balance of my 50 tones of mined cargo to open an engineer. Stopped to refuel at a star and got the message I was going to get interdicted. I was already stopped, refueling, scanning the unknown star and it said submitted throttle zero. One guy shows up and my python gets him no problem but two more showed up one an FAS I got his shields down but they went right back up and two more showed up. 4 to 1 now. My shields go down and I tried to run charging my jump drive heading away from the star. Just before I jump I heard eject, eject, eject. then all goes black. At the rebuy screen with plenty of credits to buy my python back but all the time mining that cargo down the drain. Now I have to do it all over again. I really don't like mining but it's the only way to get that cargo. I earned the credits back and more in an hour. Now have to reconfigure for mining and head out to the pristine rings again. I feel like that Startrek movie where Sovik said 'we're in over our heads, Sulu get us out of here', 'I'll try...'

You got mugged because you are a mug. What did you think you were going to gain by fighting him? The ships that interdict you are always well-equipped for battle. The FDLs and Pythons have SCBs and the FASs have chaff and shields that come back as soon as the chaff stops. The battles are always long unless you have a battle-equipped Corvette or similar. All fighting does is waste a lot of time and put you at risk of losing what you have when you mess up. Take my advice: When you get interdicted, put 4 pips to engines and two to shields, then boost as soon as you get hooked out. better still, don't carry weapons when you're hauling or running missions, then you won't be tempted. All the weapons do is slow you down anyway.

Another tip is never, ever slow to the base 30kms ("throttle at zero") when carrying any amount of cargo. This just invites an instantly successful interdict. I also scan a lot of Unknown planets & stars but always keep some minimum forward velocity so I can out-fly interdicts even if at a snail's pace, plus you can throttle up as you dodge. I generally keep 3 pips SYS, 3 pips ENG (or 2SYS/4ENG if I really want to scoot between Unknowns), so I'm never tempted to fight it out. I try and restrict my battles to those I have chosen.

Also, fuel scooping at zero throttle is kinda useless (I know one intro tutorial site recommends that but I disagree), since you can simply circle the star @ 25% to 50% throttle and fill up the tank faster, with the additional bonus that if you get an interdict warning you can veer off and be ready for it far away from the star's corona, less heat risk.

I feel for you. And you are not a mug. Mistakes get made. Bad information shows up occasionally in all walks of life. And a lot in game as well.

I actually went out into the black without weapons in my ASP. 49LY jump. How? The slot 6 had a 6 fuel scoop. 5 seconds or less to top up the tank.
When the tank is halfway, top up.
In your case, you need to be ready to run. This time, you were not ready.
I say you are not a mug because when interdictions occur, a ship, maybe an Annie jumps you. My Python is okay there. Another red dot shows up. I say to myself "He has SLF's on board"
And then that other red dot is in front of me. Itarget it. Another Annie. Damn! The a third Annie! What did I do? Boosted. Takling damage. Finally got away to target station.
Lucky me.

There are many threads where people such as you get caught out. Learn. Adapt. Win. By the way, Best of the season to you and all.

I wasn't ready. I forgot my mission. Hind sight is 20/20. Merry Christmas and here is some REP.

@Col Blair - I'm going to share an old smugglers tip with you... Consider this ip an early xmas present :p

Fuelscoop with the ship's back end pointing at the star so you are 180° from normal scooping, sure its slower scooping this way and you cannot scan the star, but you will never get interdicted as when the NPC tries to get behind you, the fly into the star.
