Cleaning lenses (Rift)

My Oculus came with a small black cleaning cloth (microfiber or sth, got a similar one for my glasses) and that's what I use.

O7,

Well, I've ordered some Zeiss lens fliud and some super duper clothes. So periodically I'll just use a little fluid to ensure grease etc is being removed and not just moved...

No way! The more you use that single cloth, the more crap it picks up, the more likely you will scratch your lenses.

I believe these were the specific wipes recommended by Oculus Staff on the Oculus Forums a while back: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Z29L9K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

although I've also used the Zeiss wipes: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UWNFRIA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Those anti fog ones must surely leave something on the lens? I'll swear I've used those for paint balling!?

The anti-fog wipes leave behind a thin waxy residue. It's usually not noticeable, but it sometimes can be.

I don't use stuff like that on my glasses, but I do use Rain-X on my car's windshield and windows. I highly recommend doing that a few times a year.

Funny amazon thing.

The zeis wipes are priced at £13.

Shipping: £39.99

It really isn't that big a deal to brand match this, go into any decent opticians and they carry boxes of these.

I' m using microfiber wipe, the one that had been shipped with the Rift , i humidify the lenses with my proper breath , and clean them without problem or scratches.

I've used both the MCR and the Zeiss wipes. Although the MCR ones seem to be favored by the Rift Developers, I'ved never noticed any "anti-fog" benefit (or any anti-fog residue).

My big problem is the blasted thing getting all steamy... anyone got any hints for cooler play? :)

Put the Rift under your armpits to bring it up to body temperature. That should mitigate the fogging you get caused by the moisture from your face condensing on the cold lenses.

Warm the rift up - obvious now you mention it. I'm using a loft conversion room and it does get cold up here... Thanks for that :)

I can sometimes before play leave it on the desk with one of the controllers inside it to trigger the shutoff sensor, the panels and surrounding tracking LED's then light up and heats the HMD up.

Yeah usually find after 10 minutes or so of wearing it, the fogging problem goes away after a quick wipe down as the lenses have had time to warm up by then. It all just depends on how cold the Rift is and how hot you are. Someone could do with making a little warming pack to fit in up against the lenses. I suppose you could use one of those little microwavable bean bags to warm the lenses up for a few minutes before hand. By the time you've done that though, you may as well have just worn it for a bit and let it warm up itself.

I wear glasses and Elite Dangerous is the most challenging game to play in VR. Getting it spot on is tough, and cleaning the lenses was a massive issue for me.
I bought a load of high quality microfibre cloths from amazon - TICK
I went to specsavers and bought a bottle of the cleaning fluid that is used specifically for glasses that have the anti-glare treatment on them.

I spray a bit of the cloth, after using a very soft lens-pen brush to get dust off, wipe around, then wipe with a second micro fibre cloth.

This gives me the best results by FAR.

The other important feature, which I know is a bit off topic, is make sure you "TILT" the oculus, not just have it on straight. Sounds crazy, but it was a game changer for my ED experience with Oculus.

Thats worked for me and I am LITERALLY Obessive Compulsive about my glass lenses and oculus lenses....so if it gets past me, something is right.

I dont use glasses, but I do tilt it downwards, towards my nose. I think thats how its designed to work actually, so you feel a bit of pressure on your cheekbones and not your forehead. The lens are very finicky, in that only the middle portion is useable, the rest completely blurry. I hope the new versions improve on that a lot. Not that I don’t enjoy, but I cant imagine how much better it can get.

Oh, and if you use glasses I recommend adding a protective film. On my first cv1 I got a small scratch on the lens after a friend used it with glasses the first time! A decent 56mm watch face protection film is cheap and does the job. Otherwise I would go for a more expensive mod to support glasses or use contact lenses.

I really feel for you trying to use glasses in the Rift. I too have to wear glasses, being very short sighted, and I found it just impossible to get any comfort in the rift with glasses on as well - it was just not possible for me. Also I was paranoid about getting scratches on the Rift lenses from the glasses themselves, so all in all I was not enjoying the experience at all. Until .... I came across the WIDMO prescription lenses which fit perfectly inside the rift actually protecting the rift lenses, which then require less cleaning anyway, and they are the exact prescription for each wearer. I did try contacts and they too worked well, but to me the hassle of putting them in and out somewhat degraded my overall enjoyment of the Rift itself. So for me WIDMO was the way to go. The only downside would be if you wanted to switch users a lot with your headset (which I don't). It takes a minute or two to fit the lenses into the headset and I can imagine this being a hassle eventually as well. I found that the steaming up problem is easily resolved by warming the lenses with a hair dryer prior to use. Hope you get sorted out, and that the next gen of headset makes more provision for those with sight issues.

I use camera lens cloths for wiping any skin oils that get on the lenses and I use Cressi anti-fog spray to keep the lenses fog-free.
