It's a bit ridiculous.

I was fine taking my Python 18 jumps for ~200 LY to get to Deciat to do some engineering. But then to find out I need a Meta Alloy that I can only buy from ONE station that is another 400 LY away... I'm kinda . Now I have to sit through 35 long , super boring, tedious jumps to get there, and the same to get back all for one damn thing just to unlock access to the engineer. OR, I have to go spend yet even more of my hard earned money, to buy another ship that might cut the jumps in half... REALLY?! So sick of this game. After ~800 hours, I don't know if I can do it anymore, it's just not fun. jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump jump = boring.

If at first you don't succeed...

It's unfortunate state of affairs but using third party tools to figure out Engineers is necessary if you don't want to spend forever jump jump jumping since apparently you can only "store" one recipe (read: shopping list) in your ship's computer (perhaps as a throwback to the computers of the 80s?). I'm hoping Beyond includes a web browser in the ship so I don't have to constantly alt-tab to use eddb.io or inara to fill the void the developers have left. Would also be nice for Netflix on my main sensor display too for all that jump jump jumping I still have to do even with those tools.

Oh I remember getting my first engineer invite. I was suspicious I had not look online at anything. at time I had managed to get a cobra 3. I didn't know there was a quick mode on planner either. from starter area to decay it was 80 jumps, I remember thinking omg. this will take years to get anywhere.

got there to find the same

I then Travelled to miai in cobra again without fast mode on... I travelled in eco mode, hundreds plus jumps. I felt like I had really gravelled for ever. and I flew back, I engineered and three months later found the fast route option on map. well well what a difference.

Oh I forgot to mention I got attacked fuel scooping half way back, alloys fell out of cargo. I had to go back and back again

Inara is a good tool for engineers, but in this case, the information is in the game itself. Just view engineers and see what you need to do to unlock them.

Oh yeah! I just realised I'd forgotten about that screen.

Shows how much I rely on verified information.

Tee hee

Stop at the closest station. Store your hardpoints and utility mounts. D rate everything your can and your jump range will be better. Pick ur stuff up later.

Space is big.

800hrs and you've not increased your fsd range, in any ship, I'd be bored too

Alternatively, you could just fly to the Pleiades and, rather than fly back, evacuate people from burning stations, fight aliens, patrol the rescue ships or whatever. Then, after having tons of fun, you can fly back and get an FSD upgrade.

Or you can grind&complain. Seems dull to me, but its quite popular for some reason. ;)

Perhaps play games that do not simulate a Galaxy and portraits space as really, really big?

If you haven't already, there's a good chance you'll unlock the first requirement for Elvira Martuuk when you get to Maia too.

Knowing that you need meta-alloys, and knowing where to get them are two different things. It is pretty lame you have to go outside the game to find out where things are located for unlocks, or the most efficient paths to get some painite, or datamined wake exceptions in famine systems. Elite is like a giant secret menu experience at Starbucks or In-N-Out Burger. The OP pretty much shows what happens when someone limits their game play to the game in ED. OP - check out Obsidianant , Down to Earth Astronomy, and Yamiks on youtube for tips when you get ready to unlock other engineers. Good luck man - and enjoy those hiwake loading screens.

Some info from the side in here:
Jump ranges have had a 4.6X increase since launch. Engineers adds up to 55% odd on base and neutron stars +300% stacking on.
As an FYI - Adder or Cobra III or Hauler stripped for range can cover 30ly a jump without engineers. All cheap. Would be 8 or 9 jumps instead of 18.

Then engineered they can make up to 40-50ly for 4 jumps. Anaconda and Asp E can make 60-65ly engineered which would be 3 jumps.
Neutron star boosts give +300% to your 100% range too. Type in the galaxy map "Colonia", thats 22,000Ly away and can be reached in 1h 47min if tooled up right. "Beagle Point", literally as far as it gets is 6h 35min away in the right ship with the right technique.

Sadly the Python isn't the best at long range travel. Not the worst but far from the best. Taking the right tools for the job is key, and no the game won't hold your hand or make it easy. This isn't COD or any other game which starts with "use the left analogue stick to move and the right to look around" like it's the first video game you've ever played. Some people don't like that about Elite, others love it, each to their own really. Not trying to say this in a critical way, its just how it is as a game.

As a side note there's a panel in statistics showing how many jumps you've done and distance travelled. I believe I'm at something ridiculous like 53,500 jumps and 2million Ly travelled :)
