General / Off-Topic What did we think of Doctor Who (spoilers allowed)

let's just say, for a second, this choice is solely with a social agenda.

Can you articulate why is that so bad?

How many young girls get to see hero just like them solving problems and saving the day in franchises like Dr Who, Ghostbusters and Star Wars?

Is that a bad thing? So it makes a few older fans a little off balance. As you say... "meh".

I've never understood why political correctness is a bad thing.

Post reported for breaking TWO forum rules (#2 & #3)

What a ridiculous reply to make.

i thought you weren't reading or replying to anything i post anymore? feel free to carry on telling people they're blinkered or missing woods for trees either way. the standard MO for this thread seems to be lots of posts asserting some sort of bias / conspiracy / agenda, and in the face of actual proof that this simply isn't the case, simply telling people they're wrong and leaving it at that, or thinly veiled insults, or making spurious claims about old episodes that most people don't have the ability and / or time to check, such as the doctor saying something about "cross dressing".

i know for a fact the doctor has not said this, but anyone reading may well think "well, yeah, if the character said this then they have a point". they're not gonna dig out a few hundred old episodes to check, and so baseless claims are somehow accepted as being correct. nobody imho is being baited up above, because nobody is being named or called out directly. if you object to a recap of the incorrect and in some cases sweeping statements in this thread, i really don't know what to say - it would be no different to physically using the quote facility, except then people would be directly quoted and seeing as the doctor going on about cross dressing, or thor, are highly likely to never be addressed at this point by the people who mentioned it there didn't seem to be much point to it.

/ EDIT - as for #3, i'm at a loss. where does the post fall under anything to do with #3 on the posting rules?

Loved it. Bloody loved it. I thought that it was not only one of (if not the) best Christmas Who ever, but also a damn fine episode in its own right.

Capaldi has been superb. Moffat...well, ups and downs. But I can’t fault him for this one.

And the identity of the soldier...I guessed about 20 minutes before the end, and damn if I didn’t fill up a bit.

The next series (which is in autumn, I think) is going to be interesting in lots of ways. I’m cautiously looking forward to it.

I watched it very late and was micro sleeping half of the time.

However next day I couldn't stop think about that episode for some reason. It was simple, full of Who cheese, and nostalgia. But somehow it worked for me. Now I really love it.

I think we should realize that Who have been played by so many excellent actors. Smith was my first (damn love that guy, I hope he find some meaty roles in both cinema and stage to chew on), but I enjoyed both Tennant and Capaldi very much. Capaldi strike me more directly because he mirrored lot of insecurities, frights, darkness within me during his first two seasons. Last one was more of try out how he would work in more stand alone eps. And it was a blast.

Also Moffat...yes, he is ridiculous. He is a bit cynical sometimes. But he has wild heart and show under his direction has brought some high class drama which have brought me to tears too many times. Whole fifth season, whole time cracks loop. Hell Bent/Heaven Sent. Also he somehow enabled both Smith and Capaldi to have such exits that it didn't felt like we are moving to completely different person. I think he mended whole 'End Of The Time' screw up....Doctor stays same person, but as we all, he/she changes.

Also yes, I am looking forward female Doctor :) I hope they don't shy away from risky/interesting situation that will enable.

I sugest anyone who argue against Jodie to see Broadchurch. She is anything but some social agenda choice. She is powerhouse of acting. Damn, I can't wait to see her in action.

In terms of New Who (Ecclestone onwards) Capaldi and Tennant are level pegging for my favourites. Smith I really, really liked so he's a very close second. Ecclestone wasn't in it long enough for me to properly like him, but I was definitely warming to him at the end.

If I have two complaints they would be (a) please stop using the Sonic Screwdriver as a magic wand, and (b) please don't shy away from actually killing off companions if the story merits it. Chief example, Clara. She should have died in 'Face The Raven' - it would have given her death some actual meaning and been a suitable consequence of her over-confidence. Instead we have her made effectively immortal two episodes later.

Yeah, they seem to struggle to go away from sonic screwdriver, but I love some in-jokes they had for last three two seasons about Doctor waving it around, especially during 50th special LOL :D

As for Clara - I don't know...I am thorn about this. I actually liked that Clara got to reflect on insane way Doctor went for to save her....putting back and let her die as she wanted to might be best way to resolve, but I will guess they didn't want end on downer. I am not hating them for that...I guess that's something always many people will argue about.

As for Hell Bent it only occurred to me during last week what Doctor means by saying 'only THEN I remember' when opening doors with number 12. When I realized it is now very chilling and very feels moment for me. Moment he realizes he done this thousand times and he will keep dying billion times because he hates Time Lords for what he did to Clara and he wants them to 'resolve it'. I know Clara was a bit mixed bag for lot of fans, but damn that's awesome writing and story arch.

'Heaven Sent' was one hell (heh) of an episode, and clearly demonstrated that Capaldi could carry an entire episode by himself. Also, wonderfully different to the normal fare. A few more like that would be welcome.

From the Tennant era I've probably re-watched 'Utopia' the most. Seeing Derek Jacobi mentally switch from lovely, bumbling old Professor Yana to the Master is simultaneously heart breaking and chilling.
