I went to my favourite Chinese today... Right round the corner.

Curiously, as I got closer, I noticed the sign above the storefront wasn't lit up, and I could see a bright light below it.

As I got closer, I saw that the mysterious light was an illuminated frame. Within the frame, words that honestly broke my heart.

"Under new management"

I am genuinely upset about this.

Yeah, it always sucks when your favourite restaurant/shop/whatever gets closed, moved or changed. :/

Yeah. It really kills the mood of a day. No idea what the new management is going to do, as the picture of a dish on the poster wasn't even Chinese... So right now I'm really lost.

Awe man! So, was it closed or did you try the new stuff?

No, it seems the place is under renovation. I won't lie... The place was a bit tatty. And it proudly displayed its four out of five hygiene rating.

But the character is going to be lost forever. That's why I liked it. No, loved it.

That Chinese was the one point of consistency I had every week. A delicious meal every Wednesday, that I'd half of on the day, and the other half for Thursday lunch.

And now it's gone.

I know I might be taking this a little too personally, but I don't have much to look forward to in life. That take-away was a rare exception.

It's almost funny. We all have our habits, rituals, even, and places that are as familiar to us as home.
And then seemingly stupid change can completely throw us off balance.

Oh yes, absolutely. Make no mistake. I'm having genuine difficulty with coming to terms with this.

I know what you mean, I frequent a café that while nothing special to look at, and yes the word "tatty" would also apply, they do very nice food. If they ever sell the café, the character would change and I'd probably not go back there.

As for your Chinese takeaway changing hands, may I suggest that if it's changed and you don't like it, you learn to cook whatever you liked for yourself? I did this when I got food poisoning from a Chinese takeaway (I must stress it was not their fault) and it motivated me to learn to cook.

My goal this year is to learn to make curry properly (ie not using a jar of curry sauce)

It will only get worse, believe me. With age, these "THEY ARE CHANGING THE WORLD AROUND ME!" panic moments will become your daily bread.

Sadly times. :(

You know that isn't a bad idea. Thanks for that. I wouldn't have thought of that.

I remember leaving Brixton and the chipie on waterlane no chipie has ever come close.

Since moving to Sweden I also miss a few of my fav take aways, also Gregs sausage rolls but I have to say the local pizza tops anything I ever had in the UK

The chinese takeaway in town shut it's doors "for renovation" 6 weeks ago.
They made the best chicken, green pepper and black bean sauce dish in the area.
However, now the sign has been taken down from over the door, so I think they're shut for good! :(

For shame.

It is said though .. probably by the Chinese .. that no man ever steps in the same river twice;
As water moves along it's not the same river .. and s/he is not the same man.

So onwards. Upwards. And chicken chow mein!

Regarding losing your beloved restaurant, I'll just leave you with these words of wisdom from an old bard who said it better than I ever could:

One of the worst things about moving house is having to find new takeaways.

We accept this, but to have your favourite Chinese takeaway snatched from under your nose is hard to take. Lost my favourite over a year ago, tried several others but all disappointing and poor value for money. Not had a decent one for over 8 months.

Fortunately I have a great Indian takeaway, but really miss Chinese cuisine.

Multi cannons crossed for you that the quality isn't affected.

Since I moved to Shrewsbury, I haven't found a good Chinese takeaway.

There's like 50 of them, but none of them sell my old favourite, Crispy Chili Chicken. (Or beef, or prawns).

And none of the ones I've tried can make the same meal twice. Lol

I'm a bit picky with food, but I'll give a take away precisely 2 tries. If it messes up either one, I'll never go back.

So I don't actually have a favourite Chinese to go to yet.

You wouldn't think a Chinese takeaway was better in Cornwall...
But I've learned a lot of things were better in Cornwall.
Including the internet.
And the people.. or lack of.

Lol

I want Chinese now.

Un1k0rn, you need to stop posting food threads immediately. :p

I've tried using the takeaway apps as they have reviews, but as CMDR Cosmic Space head says it has to be good every time. The app sites seem to have as many 5 star reviews as they do 1 star, regardless of number of reviews.

Thanks to this post I have had to remove some of the remaining cranberry sausage rolls from the freezer.
