A huge challenge upcoming to frontier after release!

I wonder how frontier will model the surface of Earth, the best explored and mapped planet to date! :) It will probably be quite hard to do so! I also hope there will be some kind of mega station orbiting earth.

They have to have The Moon too, right? I want to be able to go around the moon too.

The space station should be in a lunar orbit as well, not a terran orbit. Then I can say on approach "that's not The Moon, that's a space station!'

:D

Don't expect Earth to be the same; there's a thousand years of history between now and E-D.

It could look very different...

But the moon is not as hard, no dense atmosphere, no biomes, no life, no plants, just differently shaped kinds of rock.

You kind of answered your own question didn't you?

It's the "best explored and mapped planet to date" therefore there are plenty of existing databases with height maps and other satellite imagery available all over the place that can be used as a base. On top of that it's set 1300 years into the future and rising sea levels and other environmental changes will have changed it quite a bit from today's world.

A lot can change in 1,286 years. Wars, climate change, sea rises... the Earth may not look like it does in 2014.

If the Systems in ED (Final) have only ONE Station i would be HIGHLY dissapointed. In Frontier (Elite 2.0) SOL had several Space Stations, not only one, and this was 20 years ago.

Our home system was always going to be a challenge, as its the only place we know enough about visually. Mapping some distant planet or moon is easy compared to getting Io looking just right. I think that little moon is going to be an interesting place to land on come PL.

It would not be logical to only have one of the small station models that we currently have. The sol systems need several, as mars and earth have very high populations.

Ive seen a timelione somewhere that stated that a very big ww3 has happend and that alot of the population got wiped out. So i think FD has alot of freedom to make it as they see fit. Gonna be interesting to find out what!

I'm expecting player stations, aren't you?

We need to colonise the galaxy. Most of the stars wont have stations. It'd be good to claim one for yourself.

I'd also expect there to be something other than just stations in there present form.

Refineries is an obvious one, with mining coming.

Also mobile stations, not just orbitals but giant, moving stations which travel the stars. They should appear on the galaxy map so you can plot them and work out where to meet up with one. Think of them like giant buses moving ships and people around the galaxy while they sleep (quit to real life).

There will not be player stations, only small inflatable asteroid bases. This is not a game about being a king and conquering systems. This is not EVE.

The height map at least needs to be right, I can't see anything happening that would affect everest/ the grand canyon etc... that wouldn't also render the planet entirely uninhabitable.
And if rising sea levels have altered the coastline it should still look right for the higher sea level.
Man made stuff could be completely different though, but some landmarks should remain.

I think they'll have it under control though, but will probably be the biggest challenge of the planetary landing expansion, and might even be an ongoing task after release.

Don't you think it's going to be incredibly empty then? Frontier can't possibly hope to populate 400 billion systems with something unless they come up with a way to randomly generate content.

I'd expect the database supporting the game will have trouble just having a table with 400 billion rows just to store the names of them all, much less the planets, stations and then economies of them all. Can you imagine the amount of data?

they've really bitten off a big chunk by stating 400 billion stars to explore. I'd be amazed if it ever gets over 10,000.

So long as Earth doesn't look like the bugged one from Frontier First Encounters I don't care
