Has VR changed your perception of planets?

Advantages? Putting head look aside (which obvious EDTracker can do for a fraction of the price), and ignoring the fact you lose access to your keyboard when in VR, what do you perceive as the advantages of VR for combat?

All necessary functions are available on my HOTAS and the look panels (this includes all panel/menu navigation). The only thing I use the keyboard for ever is typing in a system that I don't have bookmarked. The ability to visually track the direction and maneuvers of a target as you chase is a huge benefit in combat.

Personally, I have no issues reading text and the ability to look and lock a target is also very helpful in locking specific targets quickly.

I simply haven't got enough buttons etc for everything I'd want mapped. Hence me also having to use Voice Attack for thing like power management, a USB (three way) pedal for FA off and heat sinks, and the keyboard for a few other options. eg: Go to system/galaxy maps etc...

Since you don't play much anymore, I'm not sure if upgrading the HOTAS would be a worthwhile investment, but I've found the X-56 has more than enough switches and buttons for anything you could need. It can be had for a relatively low price, especially if you find a refurbished unit.

Upgrade? Hmmm...

I specifically chose my Cobra M5 and CH Pro Throttle for features not number of buttons :)

That said, they're not exactly short of buttons :)

I would consider it an upgrade, but to each their own. :)

For me I just prefer the ch-pro and cobra m5 feel and control positioning more... And if I reecall, the X56 just seems too big for me!

The analog stick on the X56 joy is great though! I'd really like that!

I have EDTracker and an Oculus, and as regards spatial awareness, I can't really say there's a lot of difference IMHO. Add to this EDTracker means image quality is clearer (eg: text easier to read) is a bonus point to it too.

Keyboard? This is probaby my bad as I still haven't bothered mapping all my controls (eg: J & H etc) to my HOTAS. Primarily because I don't really play ED anymore (so can't be bothered), and furthermore don't really want to (it's basically fully mapped as is). Guess I'd need to Voice Attack them and similar other controls...

Never quite understood these claims about text (unless it is an eyesight or hardware issue) I have ED running on HMD quality 2, SS 1, SMAA, everything in ultra with a 1080TI and OC'd I7 7700K. Am typing this whilst inside my ship in supercruise using oculus dash, everything is crystal clear on the bridge.

Had used TrackIR for nearly seven years, also still have my tripple screen ED tracker setup. It is not even remotely close to VR on a decent rig. Kinda makes me suspicious when I read ' I can't really say there's a lot of difference' But hey, it's your opinion.

So while reading text in ED's HUD, you don't find it hard(er) to read than on a monitor? Default colour or modified HUD colour?

No not difficult to see or read anything, not with a blue HUD, combined with 2x HMD. I find 2 HMD with SMAA my bare minimum, hence why I burnt a hole in my wallet and upgraded my rig.

Was also quite surprised at how comfortable dash is, have a 50 inch web browser floating off to the side onboard the ship. Can read and type just like it was a real screen in front of me. Obviously not 4K.

The biggest VR limitation for me is ships out at a very long distance, 20km, hard to make out. Only way to fix that is to crank up SS, my rig is at the limit for 90FPS.

Yeh, I doubt I could manage 1.5x HMD, let alone 2.0 (on my 1070)... 1.2x would probably be OK.

Never got around to changing my HUD colours either.

HUD colours make a big difference, just too hard to read text with the default orange (some find it ok) I find Blue works best for me in VR.

There is also the HUD brightness setting int he right hand panel - I think its set to full by default - I have mine down to minimum (standard orange colour).

Text can be blurry sometimes, but that's the HMD slipping out of the "sweet spot" on my head.

Going back to topic - the planets are much better in VR - the "3Dness" of them allows for much better manoeuvring in supercruise. Also for some reason since I have had the Rift when I take off from a planet's surface and enter supercruise I seem to have a habit of doing a roll, then pitch to reach occluded destinations, pretty much as you would in a RL rocket....no idea why, it just feels more natural like that.

Definitely blue for me.

And (now gloating) 1080ti lets me use 2.0 HMD :)

Yeh, again, a shame there's not a couple of default options for HUD colour (including "blue")...

Do you have 2x HMD defined in ED, or globally eg via Oculus Tray Tool?

Hi N, use the setting in ED. Use Oculus Tray Tool to set SS (at 1.2)
