What Games Pass The Time The Fastest?

Or types of games.

I've noticed turn based strategy games seem to hog most of my time.

Back in the day, I used to play XCOM Enemy Unknown for "a little while", but was really until the wee hours of the morning.
Skipping ahead and not much has changed.
The new XCOM 1&2 games still require me to set an alarm, to actually go to bed/work/eat.
As does the Total War games.

Yet many real time games, from FPS', to Simulators, or ED, and platformers, like Assassin's Creed, and whatnot, I'm able to keep track of the time much better.

I assume it's something to do with the fact that stuff in real time, actually takes a set amount of time.
Travelling times, missions, quests, etc can all be calculated fairly accurately. But the time to complete your turn in XCOM, or Total War, can vary wildly.

Which games seem to eat up your time the most?

Open world action adventure games that have a big map with a bunch of symbols on it that go away once you do whatever is at that location. Ubisoft games are notorious for this. Also Rockstar. I can easily sit all day and clear off map symbols, then look up and say "S**t, I've been doing this for 16 hours?!"

I'd say turn based ones. I played Endless Legend recently and regularly went ? when looking at the clock. Experience is consistent with decades of Civilizations, Total Wars and such.

I find the same thing with XCOM type games. I think it's because you can finish a mission reasonably quickly, so the temptation to just do one more mission is quite high

a good turn based game is one of the great ways to spend you free time, PRG like the witcher and now ACO is also a good way to do it.

For me it's not specific to a genre, but whatever game I happen to enjoy at the time. ED infamously demolished a lot of my free time without me even noticing. I've played quite a lot of Grim Dawn recently and that one sure seems to make the time go flying by!

I don't suppose you have LEGO Worlds?

I'm somewhat interested in it, but not too sure whether it's worth the purchase.

I do. It's fun and frustrating in equal measures. Exploring is fun but building is clunky and frustrating if you're not using the pre-built sets. The camera is also a tad frustrating as cameras can be!

2 player can be fun with split screen, my 7 year old likes it.

I replayed witcher 3 several times and found it to be a marvellous time eater (is that even a good thing?)

....

Just one more side mission. Leads to another .... to another.

Lately it’s been Factorio, an odd game about logistics and building automated manufacturing. It’s still beta, but wow is it ever a time sink. Really been enjoying it. Also Cities: Skylines. The XCOM series. I love games :)

Which games seem to eat up your time the most?
for me, ED is the biggest timesink of all, due to it's persistent galaxy and ever-running timers that don't stop even if i do. and building a nice mission stack is a good way for me to burn about 6 hours without actually having done anything productive in the game, then completing the missions burns a few more

almost every other game i have, i can either pause or save and quit when i want to wander off for a coffee or do anything else - with ED i always need to finish what i started first, to a degree anyway.

Arma series.. The Editor. Thousands of hours in there, too many to bother counting. Its a great place to be and you can create a custom world of conflict.

For me Divinity Original Sin2 is an absolute time vortex :)
Oh and Reassembly (building little spaceships for fun) is a cool game on steam.
We don't talk about LEGO Worlds....
