Is there a way to see player groups in the galaxy map and what systems they control? Basically, I'm trying to find a way to find out if a system has a player group in it with the tools provided in game.

There's no way to know unless you fly to each system in the bubble and look for the minor faction with the stupidest name.
Frontier dropped the ball in terms of in-game information access, and since third party devs picked up the slack they haven't had any incentive to do anything about that.
If it were up to me I'd burn them all to the ground just to get the onus for providing this data back on Frontier again.

Yes, kinda. The factions with descriptions are player factions, then you have to do a bit of sleuthing to find out where they are. Hoping for better tools for faction management in the future, but its only a hope.

The other way to do it is through Inara.cz.
You can see which factions are present and which other systems they are present in.
Each system will typically contain 3 or 4 ‘home’ NPC factions which tend to be variations of the system name (people’s party of system, system jet cartel, system mafia and a couple of expansion factions from neighbouring systems.
It is a case of looking at their names and trying to work out their home system.
Beware: not all player factions are noted as such. It is possible that some player factions have been populated into Elite and are still listed as NPC

The player factions really do stand out for all the wrong reasons!
It was a nice idea to begin with, but unfortunately we've got a bubble full of badly / none maintained player factions with daft names and just a handful of decent, dedicated BgS groups.
Oh well.

It would be nice to have an option on the galaxy map to see just the player group home system - then by selecting that one system, be able to see other systems they have a presence in. Thanks for the help.
