Finally got my wife into this game, she has a few observations about it

Greetings CMDR's

Having been a fan of the original Elite, then Frontier Elite 2 I got into ED when it was first released on XB1. For a long time my wife just did not get the concept of why I found it so interesting, to the point she thought it was so boring she hated even watching me play the game. However, in the last couple of months (after wasting a ton of cash into Destiny 2, what a disappointment that was) she was looking for something new to play. I decided to try and get her into ED. I started by getting her to watch a lot of Obsidain Ant's YouTube content that explains the history, lore and story happening in the ED universe, and in particular the recent additions of the Thargoids etc. These videos finally seemed to peak her interest and I got her to start playing. So for the last 3 days I've been coaching her, teaching her and just trying to help her get started. In 3 days she went from the starter Sidewinder, to having a fully A rated Cobra Mk3 and she loves it. She even bought some of the cosmetic items and her Cobra looks the business now.

So, she was really enjoying the game, enjoying the grind of building towards better ships and equipment etc. But here is where things start to fall apart. She thinks the game is fascinating, ambitious, great to look at and could be amazing, but she wants more. She started asking me questions such as "Why can't I go look around the inside of my ship?" / "Isn't there some more relevant 'Story' missions that relate to the lore and history?"

I did tell her that the FDev guys are working on new stuff all the time, and space legs are apparently coming one day, but I was wondering if anyone knows what new features etc. might be coming soon? As I said, its taken me ages to get her into the game, she loves it and is determined to get enough money to buy a Python next so good luck to her. I get this feeling however without more "content" she will get bored and drop it completely. We need more variety in missions, more stories that seem to mean something, more interesting things to do. Have the FDev's announced much in the way of whats coming next?

I think many of us have those questions!

There's a lot of new stuff coming next year. These set of videos are the stuff from the FX17 Expo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQHTBxRA4wo&list=PL7glm5rbPHKxFTCd36_ygwquMcZaOZudl

We know we're getting a whole bunch of free updates next year:

- "Core game improvements", an array of tweaks updates and development on the core gameplay.
- Exploration improvements
- New planetary models (better surfaces etc)
- Updates to player groups in-game (essentially adding formalised Guilds and the ability to purchase a megaship)
- Updates to Galnet, and the addition of Galnet audio
- Several new ships (the Chieftain and Krait are confirmed, with more to come)

That's likely to be a non-exhaustive list, and there's probably something I've forgotten.

We also know there will be some premium content updates, similar to how Horizons was a paid-for update. No details yet, but my guess would be 1st stage Atmo planet interactions (flying into the atmo of Gas giants etc. some of the rocky planets with thin atmo will become landable and have "weather conditions" - etc. as a 1st stage to an eventual "full" planetary landing). I expect as part of that we'll get new ships for atmo flight and probably new SRV's (there's several different models in the concept art book). I doubt we'll get space legs this year, since my guess would be that they'll want to get planets sorted first, then they'll introduce a limited ability to walk around on planets (instead of just driving), as 1st stage space legs.

There's also the continuation and development of the Thargoid storyline. I expect that will be a continual development from now on, we're only barely seen the Prologue so far. There's also something to do with the Guardians coming next year too, continued development of that storyline.

My guess is that we'll see at least one or two things from left-field. My feeling is that one or more of the Permit-locked areas will open and there will be "something" in there to play with - I'm hoping for a long-lost human colony that's grown up into a totally independent human faction, I think it would really interesting to explore how they might have developed over hundreds of years totally isolated from us.

Anyway, I reckon it's possibly the best time to join ED :)

You probably won't be able to tell her that "more Story/lore-based missions are coming". The Story and lore comes to us via Galnet, and is hand-scripted. Missions are procedurally-generated. It is very difficult to convincingly merge hand-scripted and procedurally-generated components of a game.

We're apparently getting some kind of in-game "codex", which may be some way of showing the personal CMDR's interaction with the lore. I'm not entirely sure how that's going to be implemented, or whether it will provide that "connection to the Story" many players are asking for.

Here, I can help with the Space Legs:

As for looking around in your ship (your ship’s cockpit anyway,) you could try Vive, Occulus or EDtracker. Or you could bind one of your game controls to head-look. When my EDtracker used to work, I would just turn my head an be able to see quite a bit of the inside of my cockpit.
As for story based missions, don’t think it’s coming anytime soon. I haven’t seen any news regarding that.

I just watched Black Mirror for the first time and started with this episode.
I suspect Dav Stott is Daly and Bo is "the new girl".

I binge-watched the first three series over the last couple of weeks. And I think it's broken my head.

Be warned: some of them are very bleak.

well, she is bound to the same shock most any other elite dangerous player experiences once the initial fascination wears out. that she perseveres or not depends on her. you can tell her that during that long wait the forums can be even more fun than the game for all us hardcore fans still resisting.

don't lie to her. frontier's hype machine and bull generator are bad enough, but even they have acknowledged that the team is currently at minimal levels and that space legs are not even on the agenda for the time being. the stated goals for 2018 are more or less laid out on the roadmap:

Thanks for that, looks like a few nice improvements coming soon and I'm sure she will love them. She really has dived headfirst into this game and loving it. She has always been the type of person that enjoys the grind of a game for in game rewards, often a perfectionist when it comes to completing 100% of a game, so I think I've found the perfect game that she will NEVER be able to complete 100%. We did our first winged up mission together last night, her in her bright purple A rated Cobra Mk3 and me in my Keelback. This was the first time I'd actually tried joining a wing with friends and it was great fun. Going to give Multi-crew a try this evening with me as her co-pilot in her Cobra. We are going to head over to see her first engineer and see if we can improve that Cobra any further.

Thanks for the advice, we appreciate it Cmdr
