Sticky for optimal Windows Mixed Reality Headset settings

I have an awesome update for this!! I was talking with Microsoft engineers over on reddit, and after analyzing the trace I provided for Elite Dangerous, they believe they have found a fix and it was basically caused by the E.D. threads taking over the Mixed Reality threads. This would make a lot of sense according to what I was seeing!

They told me the fix should be part of the next Steam VR Mixed Reality beta!

Awesome news!

Thanks. Here's hoping. :)

This brought me to an idea. I manually set the affinity in the task manager. Dedicated four threads to the WMR, four to Elite executable and two to SteamVR. It did affect the game performance a little, but it really helped the stability of the picture and tracking (much less tearing when opening the menus, mainly)
So if they manage to sort this out, it'll be awesome. :)

i7 minimum confirmed...

But that's 6 cores and 12 threads. Put some more threads on the game! :)

I need some to keep the rest of the PC breathing. :D
There are three WRM subprocesses, three for Elite, two for SteamVR environment and million other small things and when I give Elite more threads, the whole thing folds.

:D At least you tried. Are AMD still heat monsters? I walked away years ago as they melted everything around them including themselves, but I've been hearing good things as of late.

Ryzen is kinda awesome. TDP around is 90W (60-70W for four-cores), so you can overclock it with just a stock cooler and it still won't go over 70 degrees.
On factory clocks it holds 50-55 degrees while playing Elite in VR.

I got a Lenovo Explorer and i cant support this hesaidshesaid-bull some ppl wrote here. I got Oculus Rift since the beginning and bought every new model of it. I tested VIVE and also own Sony's VR System for the PS4. So yes, i can compare. Some weeks ago i bought the Lenovo Mixed Reality Headset and its awesome.

But let me go into details a little bit.

First the negative: YES, its true. the distance between lense and eye cant be changed physically, only by software-setting. Which works, but a way to manually change the distancy between eye and lense would be better. And yes the sharp spot is not as "perfect" as on Oculus. But still its pretty good. Thats really some "luxury complaining".

But beyond that. Its a complete Oculus and VIVE killer gadget!

Why? Well, first, the tracking is better. Not in accuracy, no, but in usebility! You dont need any cams around you or in front of you to get a working tracking. and where VIVE or Oculus got problems (e.g. if you got only cams in front of you but not behind you and you turn around) the mixed reality just dont care. Get over it! The InnerOut-Tracking of the mixed reality headsets just works perfectly, in all environments, even outside or in front of your office desk. One of you guys said that it does not work if you dont have your controllers in front of your headset-cams. Thats just bull. the tracking even works if you swing an awm while painting 3d and you will still get a almost perfect cycle. beside usually you dont use ur controller on your back. except you are from outter space and human. :D
Anyhow, i NEVER ran into tracking problems. NOT ONCE! i played FPS and used educational software. Never any problem. even my 11y old kids used it from the beginning with lots of fun.

another benefit: the headset even fits kids heads. something i really had problems with the sony headset. the oculus worked although ALL but the lenovo mixed reality headset are heavier.
;)

well, but im drifting.... :D .. back to topic...

its really easy to install. no setup box not lots of cables. just a hdmi and an usb. thats it. plug in and start. windows10 recognizes the headset and you can start the setup.
next thing is: the store works like a charme, SteamVR works too, meanwhile even without running your rig in dev mode! and yes even SteamVR (nonbeta!) does work wonderful.
and if you use a lil steamVR addon for oculus you can use the oculus store and their apps as well.

So in face i got a not as expensive headset as vive and oculus, i got a physical higher resolution per eye, its far more easy to setup, the headset is not as heavy as the others, i can play all from MS Store, Steam and Oculus, im not bound to a rig because of any tracking towers/cams i can literally go outside in the park sitting on the grass, plug it into my surface and can have VR fun with awesome accurate tracking!!! i can have amazing large playzones!

I wont buy any oculus or vive anymore, i did even sold mine meanwhile on ebay. what i hope of frontier (make it back to this game here)? that frontier does support the different VR devices (like oculus, vive AND mixed reality) native. Ofcourse i would hope they make it happen for mixed reality first, since vive and oculus are already supported (some kind of) while there is no real support for mixed reality yet by frontier.

and i also hope that they will implement support for VR controllers (vive, oculus and mixed reality), yes they would never cover all functions on the keyboard. but i really like to use mine PLUS the keyboard. just imagine using your VR controllers for weapons and navigating/controlling your ship in space. :D

frontier should not miss this opportunity.

well, that were my two cents. ;)

So how is your Lenovo Explorer working with Elite: Dangerous?

WMR owner here.

I have an Acer headset only, so I can't compare with the Rift or the Vive. My experience with VR in Elite started okay. Frame rate isn't great (1060GTX+core i5 3590), but playable. I use HMD quality at 2x and SS at 0.85. I set all the settings to low or off and I haven't spent much time tinkering to see how they affect the game (I want to play!). There is some stutter/loss of focus in the mission board and very occasionally in space. Seems to happen when the game loads something.
I cleaned up my PC, unplugged a few USB gadgets and deactivated the Steam Home beta and it helped a little with stuttering. GPU and CPU loads are high on all cores, waiting for a dedicated USB 3.0 PCIe card and a core i7 3770 that I got cheap. Hopefully, that will help a bit.
Image quality isn't great, jagged edges and blurry and a little dull compared to a GearVR/Galaxy S7 I tried. I agree with the general comment that the sweet spot is narrow. To see clearly, I have to turn my head, glancing only produces a blur. With all that said, the game is better in VR. The UI works great and the gameplay doesn't suffer much from the loss of image quality and eye candy. Can't say the same for other games: tried Assetto Corsa and Project Cars 2 and I'm not sold at all, I'll stick to my crisp monitor for racing games.
The whole WMR ecosystem is still raw. No way to adjust contrast or brightness for example. The SteamVR implementation is still in beta, last update was Dec 15. Got a few whole computer lockups too.

Turn your HMD down, I turned up mine and I can tell you that it made the stations and the galaxy a juddery mess, My GTX 970 can play VR medium with but raising the HMD to even 1.25 with cause stuttering.

Actually, the stuttering is almost null outside of the mission board. Judging the effects of changing settings on the frame rate is also hit-and-miss. I wish the game had a proper benchmark.

So I installed a new PCIe USB 3.0 card (Inateck KTKU3FR-4P). First thing, the provided drivers for the card do not work with WMR. You need to leave the Microsoft drivers.
The card works fine, but I haven't noticed a reduction in CPU load in Elite. All 4 cores are busy at around 50%.

Not bad... That was the one thing that wasn't a known item for me. I wanted the WinMR but I was afraid that it wouldn't run well enough on the GTX 970. I wish i had gone out and bought the GTX 1080 when I got my rift... Prices are just insane right now.

GPUminig is hogging all the cards. They'll end up on the secondary market as soon as the GTX2000 series are released I think.
