Oculus Dash / Home 2.0 - Experiences & Tips Thread

Giving up on Dash & Home 2 for now...

I've been using it since release, so I've had a good long time testing it out. I really enjoyed outfitting my home, picked up lots of new items, but I think, in this early beta stage, it really needs a beefier rig than I have. My CPU is robust enough, it's a Ryzen R5 1600, but my GPU is an RX480, which is right at the bottom of the VR-capable food chain. I really do like the new Oculus Home, and the dash as well, but it just takes so many resources. My in-game performance seems to be suffering as well. I'm hoping the final release will be more optimized for a wider range of systems.

Am I right in thinking that both Home and Store are running continuously in the background? It would be great of there were an option to turn them both off, and just use dash. If anyone knows if there is some buried option in regard to this, please let me know.

Is anyone using an RX480 or equivalent having issues?

I'm using a R9 390 which is about the same (I think) with no issues. Mine has 8 gig memory is yours 4 or 8?

One other thing, a friend of mine just had an idea that is at the same time genius and stupid. 2 players with Dash and Skype pinned could video-call each other whilst flying their ships. Very Star Trek! The downside? They'd both be wearing HMDs :|

Yeah, I think the R9 390 and RX 480 are pretty comparable. Mine is also 8GB. I can run it, and have been for awhile, and things do work. But it seems to be smoother with the old Home, and I do run into some buggy things with some games on occasion with Home 2.0. Out of curiosity, what drivers are you using? Going back to Home 1.0 let me roll back from 17.12 to 17.11, which I find to be way better.

tried dash out over the weekend, add it to the list of "wow" moments in vr! I'm not sure how much it affects performance (running a 1080), my thought it is that if I'm doing anything that's super resource intensive I probably won't be watching tv anyways, but flying through space to a high ls destination watching hellboy 2 was such a trip just for the novelty alone! I guess my only issue right now is setting everything up is a little clunky, but overall I'm impressed/happy. I could see this being a vr explorer's best friend

Oculus just got updated to version 1.22.0 but no change-log is available and I find nothing in the Internet.

Anyone with some information?

Here you go.I had to dig quite a bit for it, for whatever reason. I'm happy to see they're actually implementing community suggestions in a timely fashion.

Quick question on the new 2.0 home and Dash.

I launch Elite from a Frontier installed desktop shortcut. Prior to 2.0 the launcher window would open and when I started the game I could just put on the headset and be straight into Elite without ever seeing Oculus Home.

What I'm now finding is that, having started Elite, when I put on the headset I'm seeing the Dash interface and in order to switch to seeing Elite I have to grab either one of my Touch controllers or the Oculus remote and press the Oculus menu button. This is annoying.

I don't see a question mark anywhere in your post :p

I installed Elite from the Oculus store so I can't comment on your experience, but I'm a little surprised by the behavior. What exactly does pressing the Oculus menu button do? As a side note, why not just install from the Oculus store? Then you can run it from your desktop and similarly bypass Home, plus you get the added benefit of seeing your cockpit while pinning windows. People seem to be really attached to their launchers, maybe I just don't understand why.

edit to add: now with 1.22.0, we can change the file location of games in the Oculus library. I wonder if, after plugging in your license code to Oculus, you could point it to where the game is already installed and save yourself from downloading the game again?

When is the new dash going to be generally released?

I haven't seen a date mentioned anywhere. They're regularly pushing updates to the beta, adding feature requests and improving performance, so if you insist on waiting until the full release at least you'll get a very polished product. Really though, the beta is quite good as it stands.

Good point! I suppose the question is, is anyone else seeing this change in behaviour?

It closes/takes me from a grey virtual home space/void with the floating dash menu and into the ED starting hangar with the start game menu on the left and friends list on the right.

Three main reasons I suppose - 1) I don't want to re-install the game under Oculus when I already have a perfectly good installation under Windows, 2) since I often play non-VR I don't really see what it's got to do with Oculus anyway (I just see Oculus as a graphics library/driver where ED is concerned and not as an unnecessary additional delivery/launch platform), 3) as I understand it, getting and using a key to add ED to your Oculus library deprives Frontier of a small amount of revenue (much as using a Steam key to add it to your Steam library would). I bought the game directly from Frontier and don't want to divert money to Oculus so I can pretend otherwise (n.b. I may be wrong about this and/or the situation may have changed).

Sorry, that all sounds a bit antagonistic towards your perfectly reasonable question, it's not meant to!

I think my tone comes off wrong on this forum for some reason. I was just genuinely curious why folks stick with the launcher instead of integrating with Steam or Oculus. If you don't play Elite in VR all of the time, I definitely understand now. As far as the money end goes, I thought all you had to do was grab a key that already exists in your Frontier account and plug that into Oculus; no new exchange of money so unless Frontier is paying Oculus to activate your code I don't see how they'd be losing any money.

Anyway, I hope someone else with the native launcher can chime in here and help you. And just so my tone isn't misconstrued here's a smiley face :)

I haven't noticed any change to how ED starts when using the launcher...

When I put the Rift on I am in the Dash / Home setting. I'll click Play on the launcher (by peeking through the nose gap :D ), and once the client window opens up, I get an icon indicating a non Oculus app, then I get the Frontier and then Elite loading screens, shader loadings and then into the start menu hanger. :)

I also have ED in the Oculus Home library, but only start it from there if I am doing something where I will be using Dash and pinning windows a lot and want to interact with them, which TBH is rare.

Hi A, I start ED from the desktop and when I put the VR headset on I'm in OH, but only while ED is loading. Once loaded OH automatically goes to ED start menu, no buttons. Doesn't help much, but can say you shouldn't need to push any buttons.

Thanks for that commander!

For me, the new update has decreased the performance of the Oculus Home above Elite (when pressing the Oculus button on the right controller)... Prior to the patch, it was a lot more fluid, now it seems to struggle more and has some lag that was not there before...

Interesting, maybe I need to be more patient. The thing is, pre 2.0 it used to be the case that when I started Elite and put the headset on I was immediately in game looking at the various Frontier logo loading screens (whereas now I'm in a grey Home environment even tho I can hear the sound of Elite Starting up in the background). Never even caught a glimpse of the old Home environment before. It's not a big deal really, just annoying, especially since others seem not to be experiencing this.

Finally dug into Dash this past weekend. I wanted to watch the NFL playoffs and I was able to pin the football games up in my cockpit while I was out running missions. Worked well and it did not seem like a resource hog. My only big complaint would be sometimes if I took the HMD off for more than a few seconds I would lose my pinned window. It is a little awkward pulling and positioning your window but this is definitely something I'll be using often.

Almost as annoying as losing pinned windows when you take the HMD off for a while is when the pinned windows nice around when you go into Dash or take your HMD for a moment.
I find having to set up a pinned Window every time and the effort of adjusting it until it is just right is just too much for me. If I'm going to be doing low effort stuff in ED I still find it preferable to play in 2D so I can watch videos on a side monitor.
Where do you all like to put your videos in your cockpit?
