Oculus Dash / Home 2.0 - Experiences & Tips Thread

Honestly, I don't find myself pinning windows very often. There have been a few times when I'm alone in the house that I'll pin a webcam feed to my cockpit so I don't feel so blind behind me. But mostly I use Dash to access my desktop if I want to change the music or browse the web while on a 100k LS passenger mission.

Netflix or Plex in the right hand side of the main window in my Anaconda. I only need to glance to my right to watch and it doesn't hide any of the menus. Losing the window when I take the rift off even for moments is a right PITA though. Surely the devs will get this fixed.

I find that Netflix used in any browser (or the Windows Store app) causes headtracking glitches, even in Home. Not sure why as watching 1080p videos via VLC causes no peformance hit what so ever....

One thing I have found is that you can keep Dash active all of the time if you use the auto ED focus script and all of your windows stay put - no need to pin them either. I just move the dashboard somewhere out of my way.

I place mine just in front of my knees and angle it so it doesn't get in the way of any menus, where the old (unused) screen used to be.

I saw this on the patch notes for the latest Rift update:

  • Oculus desktop app:
    • Multiple Library locations
      • Install and manage your VR apps for Oculus across more than one hard drive or Windows folder

But how does one acutally change apps to another drive? Can't seem to find a way. Or is this just an option when installing?

There's now a setting to add install locations. I don't believe this applies retroactively to games that are already installed. So you'd need to set another install location active, then install the game that you want to go in that location.

A question for other Dash users ( I skimmed the thread but if this has been answered, I missed it ) :

Has anyone noticed a performance difference or experienced any different issues between pinning a window from the main desktop vs pinning a window from a desktop that is not necessarily connected to the main GPU?

I seem to have more issues when I pin a window that is from a monitor that is plugged on the iGPU than if I pin one from the main desktop that uses the same GPU as my Rift, but haven't done enough testing to see if it's coincidence or an actual issue.

To my knowledge it is recommened that you disable integrated GPUs in BIOS if using a PCI-E one as well - my understanding is that leaving the iGPU activated can lead to a whole host of problems so I wouldn't rule out the behaviour you are seeing. I also recall reading that Dash works at the hardware level on both AMD / NVidia GPUs - I have never read such a thing regarding iCore GPUs so the chances are anything running on one wouldn't have the same hardware level integration and as such wouldn't perform as well - that is pure speculation mind you.

Most GPUs will have 2x HDMI and at least one Display port - so if you are short of ports for your Rift due to a multi display setup you may want to consider connecting your Rift over a DP-2-HMDI adaptor (if thats possible on your GPU).

According to oculus the new rift 2.0 core should improve performance not only in home but in apps that were purchase and used outside home. So has anyone noticed any improvements in ED when ED is launched directly thru the frontier launcher (while oculus home is in backround)?

NO!

Hey guys,

What's your solution for watching videos that are in Chrome windows? I can't make Youtube fullscreen without Elite losing focus and if it's in chrome its too small to look at and if I make it bigger it takes up too much room.

Cheers :)

Check out CylonSurfer's post on page 11 of this thread. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...h-Home-2-0-Experiences-amp-Tips-Thread/page11 It is an autohotkey script that automatically focuses Elite anytime you move the throttle or joystick. I have been using it and it works great.

This works great, the problem is Elite then comes infront of the fullscreen Youtube window. I guess one solution is two virtual monitors unless there's something else i'm doing wrong?

I guess I'm not clear what you are trying to do.
If you are trying to watch youtube, Netflix, orwhatever while in VR you need to pin the window. Open up your desktop view, Pull the browser out.....position it where/how you want it and then click the little pin icon on the bottom right of the window you want. Then you can exit the dash desktop view and whatever pinned windows you have will stay inside your VR experience.

As Worminator mentioned, you want to make your app full screen and then 'pull it out' so it's a standalone pinnable window. If you leave it fullscreen on the main virtual desktop it will just get Elite on top of it again.

Hey,

I can't seem to be able to get dash work properly with Elite: whenever I open the dash with the Oculus button on the controller, dash opens in void mode and not seemless. I tried reinstalling Elite with no success. Note that I launch Elite through Oculus Home so there should not be a problem, every post that I saw with this issue solved it by launching from Oculus home, which I already do.

Dash works well for other games (Robo Recall).

Do you have any idea?

When you say that you launch the game via Home do you mean you have downloaded and installed Elite from Oculus Home?

Exactly, I also did a reinstall by deleting all game files presents in the computer (%APPDATA files, logs, everything) before reinstalling from Oculus Home, did not solve the issue

Usually 90, can be rounded to 45 when near stations or planets. I have not tried with uncapped FPS though.
Also I did not mention that before but Elite is the only Oculus game on which I have to change my default playback device to get the sound through Oculus headphones, although this might not be linked since it seems to be quite broken since 2.4.

Since today is patch day I will wait tomorrow to do a test with new patch and uncapped frame rate.
