Ideas for Future Wing Missions

The first iteration of Wing missions is upon us which I am looking forward to. Although in this upcoming release there will be some variations on offer, there is potential for this to be expanded to more mission types in the future, beyond what is already in the solo mission line of existing mission structures.

I'm sure Adam and the mission devs at Frontier have got a lot of ideas already on what they would like to bring in down the road now that the functionality is being added to the game, but what would you like to see in terms of Wing missions?


For me having a quick (over my lunch break) think about it myself, some possible mission types could be:

- Escort missions - One player may have tasked with trade or passenger goal with additional wing members offering protection. Higher risk with higher certainty of interceptions. Can you protect your carrier.

- Multi-tier combat scenarios - Potential for multiple waves of increasing difficulty. Reward based on tier you achieve before having to jump out or get destroyed. Contains surprises, or follow-ons to complete. Could have bonus secondary goals to achieve for those wanting additional challenge.

- Smash & Grab - Located around space installations, where you need to hack into a facility, steal some tech, items or data while protecting against security forces, then make a clean escape. Potential for different strategies to be employed to achieve the goal.

- Surface Installation based missions - Ones that combine some members in the wing using SRVs plus air support with other members. High security locations that need coordinated strategy. May be Smash & Grab variant or be destroy these base structures, or other varieties.

- Mining Party missions - Encourage coop play for mining with ability to have dedicated roles working together to achieve a target. Some may mine, others may refine while others will jump in and out delivering the ores/mats or provide protection. These could also be tightly time based (eg mine xx within an hour) for Elite missions, to add challenge, where coordinating well will give better results.

- Space Lane blockades - Using your wing, interdict and disrupt travel & supplies to a particular station or outpost. Split up or combine forces for maximum effect.

- Alien oriented missions - Kill missions, scan/data sourcing, Alien ruins based gameplay puzzles, or protect station from incoming attack. Could be a lot of potential mission types around this.

- Protect our station/outpost/surface installation - Defenses are down, & your wing is to protect while it repairs. Need to protect key access points or locations on the station with as waves of factional ships attack. Could offer some different gameplay. Surface installations may also need to combine SRV wing members to protect against ground assault.

- Auxiliary Police Security Support - Temporary badge enabled! Protect & subdue a number of hostile acts performed in the system. Special POI could spawn around the system you need to attend to quickly or fail the mission. Could also complete patrols around the system bodies that may have random event occur depending on the state of the system.


Generally, it would be good to have missions catering for combinations of smaller/larger ships too where having a small/quick ship may offer benefits over a wing of heavy ships. Primarily I would like to see a strong focus on Coop, but could see some fun for the PvPers too with specific missions. Some may offer multiple attempts where other may be limited to the one instance (do or die, no respawns). Some time based, some very short time frames while others are open as long as needed to complete.


Anyways, what would you like to see?

Lovely ideas there mate, I hope FD is thinking along similar lines.

I hope so too! So much potential here with wing missions. I look forward to trying some of the assassination missions mentioned in the stream with a friend, but the others for cargo delivery and massacres don't interest me too much personally. Hope the roster of wing missions doesn't take too long to increase at any rate once these first few variations hit the live servers.
 
Wing piracy missions :

Attack a heavily guarded Navy/Imperial convoy with shady cargo, steal it and deliver it ASAP in a shady place while being pursed by the SPACE SWATS
 
@OP: All of these are essentially single player mission templates. A lot of these exist already, they just aren't shareable with a wing (which they should be). They don't need additional people, they merely *benefit* from them. Which is fine - all missions should be shareable anyway.

But if there are going to be true wing-only missions, I think they should require (not just benefit from) coordination, division of labor, and simultaneous completion of different tasks. They should be essentially impossible to complete by yourself, for simple logistical reasons and not because there are so many additional ships/tons of cargo/shield cell banks on the target.

So, to elaborate a tiny bit on your base assault idea: There's an assassination target parked in the center of a heavily guarded base with lots and lots of anti-air turrets everywhere. There's a hackable data panel inside the base, which will disable all of the turrets, but only for a brief interval of 30 seconds at a time before you have to hack it again. Every time you hack the panel, it raises an alarm and sends another wave of skimmers at you. One wingmate has to disable the anti air turrets (and keep them disabled whilst fighting off waves of skimmers) while the other engages and dogfights with the target ship (which will not fly anywhere outside the range of the anti-air turrets). Each wingmate has a separate and distinct role to play, and each is reliant on the other to make their success possible.

This is admittedly a very bare-bones and unimaginative example I've just given, but I hope it illustrates the concept.
