Beyond: Trending Trade Routes - So close, but...

Trending Trade Routes can be seen here in the livestream - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGZ4GfR09uo&t=52m

Of all the features shown so far in Beyond Ep1, this one particularly sparked my interest - It can be used to show busy routes, specifically where CMDRs are travelling/trading.

However, I think the feature potentially falls short of being more useful as it only seems to show traffic for, or around, a specific system? (Agree/disagree with this if you've seen the livestream?)

If it could instead show much more of the bubble in some way, as a trader you could see where there's a lot of CMDR traffic and you could then then look why, and as a pirate look to see where there's lots of CMDR traffic and see if it's worth "visiting".

So if it's indeed only there to look at a single system or neighbouring systems at a time, I think it's use is somewhat limited because often you'd then need to know where to look in the first place.

Fingers crossed I've misunderstood the livestream and the Trending Trade Routes can indeed give a bigger view across more of the bubble, rather than just around a single system/neighbours?

maybe there should eb a top 10 list somewhere in the galnet, Surely a future news network would have a economy section, wouldn't it?

It's interesting you say that... Because as I was watching the livestream as clever as the new features are, they have "sqeezed" them into the existing galaxy map, with all the limitations that then means.

ie: My head was saying, an alternative dedicated view might be simpler and more useful? And that view could almost just be a list/table instead. Indeed, if you use many of the third part tools, they deliver information simply in a easy to digest table, which you then simlpy cross reference against the galaxy map for more information.

So yes, if a more dedicate list of busy routes could be offered (that can be filtered, eg: CMDR "Y"), then great!

ps: Consider my suggestion about mining and even Fleet Carriers being used to sell off stuff you've mined. Imagine if you could look at a more global view of busy routes, and see somewhere down the list, one route from a system just outside the bubble from someone's Fleet Carrier where Palladium is being sold off at a bargain price! - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...eful-resource-hot-spots?p=6054187#post6054187

This has a 40Ly range round it from memory.

Yeh, that limits its use somewhat IMHO for the purpose of seeing "where's busy and why" in the bubble at the moment :)

Not a fan of the commander function personally. I don't need people to wonder why I'm working that one really profitable route out over in nowhere or for gankers to have a trade ship heat map.

It seems quite tied with the network load, database querying overload,etc... I assume it could expand in the future if/when they optimize the system (think how route planner was quite limited before)

It is not about giving you basically cheat list where to buy and sell. You still have to discover things yourself.

Or not, if you don't want to play game.

This too. I think it's all about balance between give info and not make a cheat list and technical limitations

A "heat map" wouldn't even show you in that scenario though?

ie: You getting off a well know busy trade route would be a logical thing to do if you're worried about such things (piracy).

Understood... And I can see that, but... It seems odd that people are simply watching 3rd party sites or reddit threads or the like for the exact same metric/information now potentially?

Surely offer a more scaled and sensible version in game might be wiser?

Sure, but then it's a subjective decision between "do I want to 'cheat' the game" or "do I want to play by its 'limiting' rules".
I remember my first tradings: I tried to play by the rules and happened to make nice profits only by using the very limited infos available. Yes it was a hassle and a timesink, but the sentiment of victory was there. Of course, for an everyday work it'd have soon becoming stale.

So I'm OK with limitations from a gameplay standpoint, though I'm OK if others still continue to use EDDB (and it was clearly said they'll still continue to support 3rd parties)

I don't think Frontier are trying to emulate the functionnality of these third party websites. In fact I'm fairly sure they're trying to avoid doing exactly that, as these websites remove a big part of what is interesting in trading: prospection, discovering new places in search of a better trade route. I doubt Frontier consider the A to B grind which these websites encourage stellar gameplay, so I doubt they'll want to introduce tools which would outright replace EDDB and the like.

And by that token, if you let the player see at a glance where everybody is trading in the whole bubble, aren't you in effect doing what EDDB is doing already? Heck, I think 40ly is already too big.

I recall in the first year of the game some of my best trading experiences were when a group of us were sorking togethor. We'd all scout around in small fast ships looking for a good next trade route etc...

That seems to almost have gone now, as it just makes more sense to use 3rd party tools.
