Personal Narrative

Because, you can go grind for 37 hours then complain on the forums for another 37 hours about how you were grinding, but you dont have to. You can also get them in more interesting ways.

"I supported the uprising of communist rebels in fringe system X, and asked to be rewarded in materials/data rather than credits. After this I helped them stave off a famine, and hunted down a pirate lord that threatened the system. This got me the required materials to gain access to a customized weapon from a local tech broker." etc etc.

But yeah, you can just drive on a planet for 37 hours. The more interesting question is: why would you do something you dont want to do, then spend time complaining about doing something you dont want to do? Its the eternal question when it comes to grinding, and it'll never end. Its why Vegas does so well, drug dealers live like kings and why neuroscience is so fascinating: the frailty of the frontal lobes. :p

Another rep +1. You are on fire today!

You'll probably be able to buy them from the new Materials broker - that's shown in Tuesday's reveal I believe?

Yes, I'm hoping this is a thing as well either way, and likewise when working with the Engineers too and their additional changes.

Well you will need to have something to exchange, but it is possible yes.

I have a lot of stuff I seem to not have a particular use for currently, so this is fine with me and makes sense, somewhat further allowing me to play the game "my way" and still be able to "advance" in the game that way. :)

Yeah, I subconsciously started to hoard materials for some reason - now I know I will be able to exchange for mats I will need. This certainly allow not to worry so much about management - and raising limit of storage will help definitely.

Can't wait to try both tech broker and Engineers in beta.

I think (hope) this personal narrative will be more far reaching than just the tech broker. That maybe just the first step in a much bigger story arc.

As far as I understood it is to enable to do these different things around POIs, etc. As they try to provide reason WHY you are example hack into cargos of mega ships. And yes, I think mission chains are involved too.

The personal narrative is what you do, how you do it, and why you do it, within and without the realm of pure mechanics. If you think that the new stuff is "OMG just more grind", then the broker may not become part of yours.

If the ability to choose to do something or not means a game is providing a "personal narrative" then I guess every game from Pong and Space Invaders onwards also provided that facility.

yes, choices are integral. FYI pong wasn't set in a futuristic setting in the year 3300

I am beginning to come to the conclusion that some people have got themselves into a self-perpetuating circle of dissatisfaction. Everything is considered "grind".
Its game play, and if you cant break the circle, accept what FD are trying to do after acting on all the "input", and enjoy playing the game, maybe its time to admit its not the game for you.

If you still don't understand what grind is, or how it works, or how "dumping X amount of mats into an online storfront to unlock weapon X" is different from Personal Narrative, then maybe its time to admit that this is not the conversation for you.

Nothing. It's just an alternative to the engineers. An Engineer 2.0.

It's actually an Elite Pilot's Federation benefit right?

Not linked to powers, major minor factions, Aegis or anything, I therefore recommend Commanders keep paid up on their Union Subscription .. by contributing materials to the cause. Solidarity, Brothers and Sisters!

So narrative in games these days is meta-gaming on the forums?

I want to try the new weapons.
I don't want to spend 37 hours of grinding rocks to get them.

So what to do then?

Obvious, raw grinding is never a good thing in a game.

Certainly there should be a task to be done so it feels like a sort of accomplishment to unlock something, but this can be done in a number of different, interactive and entertaining ways that go beyond "drive around willy-nilly, pray to RNGesus, find rock, shoot, pray to RNGesus, maybe get the material you need", rinse-repeat ad nauseam.

As I said, there are other ways. Such as missions, where you can now ask to be rewarded in mats. Its not my problem you insist on just grinding in a buggy. Do missions, see aliens, combine everything.

Or grind&complain.

This. To some, it is just another set of possible consequences depending on choices you make in the game. That translates to a personal narrative, if you're that kind of player. Others just see "OMG GRIND!!!111!". The personal narrative in Skyrim, to me, is not that I am the dragonborn, or did any of the handcrafted quests. Everyone did them because the handcrafted quests are finite by definition. The personal narrative comes from the choices you make outside the handcrafted content. There is no right or wrong as to one's preference, but I do sometimes wonder how long it takes for some to see that their perspective doesnt match the perspective of others. And when those others happen to be the devs or gamemasters, that should tell you something. :p

A personal narrative is a story, right? Your characters story? So in the case of ED, you're story is as interesting as the "personal narrative" of the factory working telling you about the 3456th arm he attached to a doll. Most people when they play a game they paid money for expect something fun and interesting to do.

Please do tell how you're going to get 40 Technetium by supporting a communist uprising in fringe system X. Are you running assault missions against a rival faction called "The Rocks" by any chance?
