I finally signed up for an account on Discord because it was pushed on me like a drug as part of this Enigma Expedition, but I'm not getting the "buzz" from it that other players seem to get. With my setup, I much prefer the in-game tools for communicating. Discord takes me out of the immersion of the game, because I have to fiddle with other devices instead of just typing on my PS4 keyboard. I also have little interest when people start talking about real-life issues like religion, politics, and mind-numbing nonsense over the voice channel. I play Elite Dangerous to get away from all that stuff, LOL.

So for you hardcore Discord fans, I've got one simple question. Why? If ED offered local voice comms similar to what we get in wings, would you still choose Discord over this?

I'll keep Discord installed on my iPad for these expeditions, as the fleet-wide voice comms do have purpose in organizing "photo ops", but that's really the only use I have for it. I'm going to stick with in-game comms, this forum, and Twitter for everything else.

I use Discord for a lot of games now, particularly Early Access games it can be a terrific portal to the Dev's to report bugs and make suggestions.

We used to have a Teamspeak server for chat which when up for renewal we chose to try Discord instead, haven't looked back since.

But my fear is it will go the way of other platforms before, become to bloated, too many features nobody needs, get too complicated and generally become a victim of its own success.

Excuse my ignorance but is "Discord" simular to what I remember as being chat rooms but rather than text, it's voice. And that like the chat rooms of days gone by, one logs on to a central open room, and can apply or accept an invitation to a private what use to be text but now is vocal private room.

It has both text and voice with various "channels" for different games and sub-groups within those games.

So, though it's slightly different, it's basically an update version of what us ole timer's would call a party line. Or something simular to a version of America on line (AOL) back in the 90's. Only now it has vocal ability; Correct? And if so, I'd reckon ED won't need to or want to incorporate such a feature. Which is a bummer! Like your self, unless one is mandated to the topic like they were in the private rooms using AOL when it was the bomb or cool thing. Or get kicked out by the originator of such a room. I've no interest in discussing other worldly issues, when playing ED.

I like it, and it's got many communities, not just Elite, I can keep up with the game while mobile or at work allows more people on voice comms than party chat, allows pretty instant screenshot sharing with the combination of PSN message app, and as a moderator I need to use it anyway.

It's win-win for me. I understand totally why people don't want to use it though.

Would either you or Ole' Duck (If he's listening) know if it's only an app for cell phones and tablets. Or can one download it to their pc, thus have considerbale more adjustment in volumn, and sound?

Yes, it's available on PC too either via web browser or in a dedicated application.

Great, my pc is relitively close to my console and has additonal speakers. I'll have to check it out, and even though my interent speed may not allow me to partcipate or if it does, only in a limited manner. I can still tune in sometimes and listen. Thanks!

Duh, I forgot to ask the name of the app, assuming there is only one, and if there's more, which works best for ED.
