The 16,000Ly Challenge!

Okay, so let's see, I'm here...

On my way back from BP. Only I'm eager to get my chips cashed in and I've got tomorrow off, so I figured I'd set myself a bit of a challenge.

I want to get to here:

I've got tasty snacks, an (for our purposes) unlimited supply of booze, and several hours of free time.

So I want to see if I can cover 16KLy in a single sitting.

Oh yes, my ship:

She's a good girl, we've been to Sag A* twice, and now (as said) we're on the way back from BP, so we make a good team. Her jump range is 38.40 Ly (41.08).

The nav computer is telling me it's 277 jumps, which sounds astonishingly few for 16KLy, so I daresay that I'll have plenty of fun with the neutron stars on the way.

So what's your verdict folks? Will I manage it? Will I get bored half way through? Will I get drunk and fly into a star? Who knows!

Time to set off, I feel! I've got some good entertainment lined up...

For my first part of in-flight entertainment, I will be listening to Legolas by Laura on loop. It's not very often that youtube videos make me cry with laughter, but hey!

Before Engineers I once travelled 10kLys in 5hrs (non-stop honk, scoop & jump) in a conda with a similar jump range. You can do this, but you might want a catheter ;)

If I need any uh, breaks, I can point the ship away from the star and go afk for 30 seconds or so :). I'm not rooted in place :D.

Its certainly not impossible but its ambitious without a few heavy caffeine hits...with the booze...hmm personally I can manage 7klys in 4 hours, but thats with only 38ly range before Ive had enough and need a timeout.

And I dont drink...does nothin good fer me but I imagine Id last less than half that if I did so yeah...ambitious but ye know what? Better to try and fail than to not try and never know ^

I'm in the rift between the Boreas region and the Perseus Stem. There are still 12kly to go; I've done over a third of the jumps but still have three quarters of the distance to go.
I suspect that the next parts will be very neutron-star heavy.

Not me, I can do maybe 5k in a day. I'm scan happy.

Me too. That's why it took me five months to get out to BP.

Last Thursday I went out to Beta Site and back to the bubble (10k LY total) in four and a half hours total flight time (back was quicker after I realised that filling my hold with repair limpets was a dumb idea).

But I didn't do it in one sitting. I had a short break every hour to stretch my legs and relax my bladder, and had dinner at Beta Site.

You can do yourself a serious injury ( e.g. blood clot in a leg - stories of this happening to people in airliners were rife a few years back) sitting in one position for too long.

I was in roughly the same part of the galaxy a couple of days ago. I'm surprised I didn't bump into you. :p

I got to about 18,000Ly from Sol and decided it was time to go home.
It was 600 jumps and I did it all in one go, starting on Thursday night and arriving about 5am Friday morning.
Probably shouldn't have bothered 'cos my brain was too fried to do anything useful all day Friday.

I'm currently hanging around the bubble until my 4 week internship with Zemina Torval is up and I can buy Mining Lances for all my explorers and then I'm heading out again.

Whenever I go exploring I always seem to end up doing it in a stupid ship (Sag A in a Sidey, the southern rim in a Keelback and Beagle Point in a T10).
This time I've got a shiny new toy all ready to go and I'm looking forward to taking her for a spin. [up]

Besides, I've still got 5 series' of DS9 left and they're not going to watch themselves.

A few days ago I was at BP. I only set off on the return journey at midnight on the 17th :).

Beautiful ship, you'll fall in love with her. Good name too ^_^.

I'm lucky in that I can sit, stretch, and lay down when using my PC. It's really handy when gaming for long periods :).

I think the longest I ever did was 45,000ly in a 28ly ship before neutron stars (some 1600 jumps odd). From Friday afternoon to Sunday night I got in about 26 hours of game-time and a lot of netflix. Pretty much broke me for a few days but hindsight is 20/20 :p
At the time I was trying to catch up Distant Worlds 3302 fleet but was most of the way up a galactic spiral arm so had a good 15-20kly of backtracking to do before heading towards Sag A*.

Since then I've done a few ridiculous distances in short times with the Buckyballers, most notably 6.5 hours straight Sol-Beagle in one sitting but neutron stars and engineering make it too easy these days if you have the right route and ship you can do 12,200ly/hr!!

Good luck anyhow, it sounds like you are a good way into the trip. I have to ask: any reason why you have the specific challenge or just that it was almost exactly 16,000ly?

To be honest I was wanting to create something like "the 400 jump challenge" or something, but then when I played with the galaxy map and realised I could travel some hefty distances in much less than that, I figured that 16,000Ly was a nice round number. Nothing unachievable, but still a huge chunk of the 29,000Ly I still had between me and Colonia.

So I shrugged and sorta thought "Okay, 16k it is then, because I say so" :).

Update: 04:13: 200 jumps down, 77 jumps to go.

I am wearying of neutron stars. They might send you quickly on your way, but 10 neutron stars takes longer to traverse than 25 scoopable stars.

On the plus side, my progress has been a lot faster. I've crossed the Orio-Persean Conflux and am now in the Far 3Kpc region. I have only 5,376Ly to go. :)

Also, I'm currently in the Splojio sector, which I think is an awesome name for a brand of yogurt.

Right. Finally.

6 hours and 20 minutes later, I'm 16,000Ly away from where I started!

I've seen enough jet cones for tonight!! For this week, even!

But at least I'm a lot closer to home now. And the neutron stars I scanned on the way back will bring in some $$$ :).

It's now with a considerable sense of relief, cheerfulness, achievement and tiredness, that I reward myself by going to bed!!!
