Hardware & Technical VKB MCG Pro

Finally getting around to hooking up my new MCG Pro with Gunfighter base. For some reason, E:D won’t recognize any inputs. Neither axes or buttons are showing up. All responses are showing in both Windows game controller and in the VKB Config program. All my other controllers are picked up (Bodnar button box, X52 throttle, and MFG Crosswinds). I’m guessing it’s just some setting within E:D? In the drop down menu under controls, I selected “custom “ for binds. Anyone have an idea what could be causing my stick not to be recognized?

Thanks, Cmdr Utumno

I'm isn't there a limit to how many inputs to can have in Elite? Try disconnecting peripherals until the MCG is recognized.

I had thought of that. It used to be 4, so I had already unplugged my game pad to bring it down to 4. Mebe, I’ll unplug all others and just plug in the MCG to see if anything changes.

Moved from a powered usb hub to a port on my pc. Lo and behold, E:D picked up the inputs. Will mess around with it some more, but that may have sorted it out.

Greetings commander! I read this thead with great interest. I'm one of those guys you mentioned... The base and stick worked right after calibration. However I did install the new firmware that VKB has just released. Have you checked the site recently? Here's the link:

There's a PDF they just released as well on the firmware flashing procedure. Just check the news section.

Got the firmware flashed yesterday. I truly think VKB’s hardware is among the best availability. I’ve been a customer of them since I bought a Black Mamba Pro direct from them several years ago. I know the software is extremely powerful, but very arcane to figure out and with minimal documentation to support it. Trying to program anything with it is an exercise in trying things out and hoping it works. Me, I’d rather be actually flying with the stick than ing around with the programming. In fact, I almost cancelled my pre-order for it due to the software. Especially, since I got a Virpil Mongoose. All in all, I’m glad I got the MCG Pro.

Haha! Welcome to the club! I too am trying to come to grips with how the software works. Not having any kind of coding or software programming background, I really have no idea where to start. I'm sure they will eventually get their documentation together though. It's definitely not the simplest thing to figure out. I'd love to know how to program a [SHIFT] style modifier for instance, without mapping it in game. Sometimes I think software engineers forget they are designing software for people who aren't software engineers! :p

I'm glad too that I got the MCG Pro. It really is a fine bit of kit.

How do you compare the Mongoos to the MCG Pro? I'm super curious, as I'll end up with both, but for now...

This is true of engineers in general.

Z,
The 2 compare very favorably, imho. I had no issues with the T-50 at all. For my Obutto r3volution pit, the Mongoose is a tad too tall. That, I could have solved by fabricating a different mount instead of reusing the Warthog stock mount. Build quality, ergonomics, and gimbal are all top notch on the T-50.
The advantages of the MCG Pro over the Mongoose are simply the increased number of inputs compared to the Virpil offering. And maybe, maybe the dry clutches on gimbal. I would have rather had 2 traditional hat switches with push down in place of the stock mini sticks. Just a personal preference which I’m sure some wouldn’t agree with.
As far as the the software side of things, I never used Virpil’s. The T-50 did all that I needed out of the box. My feelings on VKB’s software is stated in my previous posts. I’m sure once I use it more and get more comfortable with it, my opinion will improve.
In summation, both sticks are absolutely fantastic. Miles ahead of anything else out there that can be purchased commercially, such as Thrustmaster, Saitek, CH, etc. I’ve used them all. Baur’s stuff, I’m told, is in the same league as Virpil and VKB. I haven’t tried his offerings, so can’t speak to that personally.
Hope, some of this rambling is what you were looking for.

Indeed - thanks!

I've got the Baur F3 rudder pedals (love them), and looking to add the VKB tot he stable to use with helos - the dry clutch should give a good simulation of how a real chopper stick works.

I agree with the hats + push vs 2 x mini stick, but it is what it is. Good to know they are pretty much on a par.
