New engineers - LOVE IT

I can't remember exactly when it was, but Ed mentioned there being a "nice long beta" for the purpose of gathering our feedback to adjust things (such as the engineer rolls and mats trader). I think 4-6 weeks is a good guess.

And uh... in the live stream Ed said that console gamers don't have to wait long. So, yeah, any guess is between 1 to 6 weeks is based on something. :p

Well, I like what I've seen.

The increased material cap (and to a lesser extent, the material broker) is crucial - this should allow players to blast through the lower grades, if they need to.

I was pleasantly surprised by the cost of experimental effects. I was expecting a commodity or credit cost to be required. Instead its just materials, again, the increased cap helps.

I say we give the new system a chance before its crucified....

Looks in other threads....

......oh.

Yeah I think folks are making assumptions based on parts of the old and new systems. Things could be quite different in ways they don’t expect. Besides, FD can always tweak the drop rates if the current system is determined to be too grindy.

I did catch that today and laughed. My gut tells me they have an internal release date planned, but that will be pushed back depending on how much (and what kind of) feedback we give them. If there are a lot of changes it will probably get pushed back as adjustments are made.

I'll add my praise for the changes to engineering. The new system is simple to understand for new players and removing the constant re-rolls to overcome the RNG chucking out worse results is a huge improvement. In my view it is a better system in every way so many thanks to FDev; well done all.

The changes look good to me. I have a lot of "good enough" modules that I stopped working on because there was no guarantee of getting a better roll. Now I can go ahead and continue to upgrade them until I'm actually satisfied.

Material limits look good for me. Material Trader looks easy to use, very nice. I like the new ignore list for materials.

And I like being able to keep the special effect across new rolls. That's kinda huge.

Overall, very nice update. I'll be in there messing with it during beta, for sure.

So basically alienate people who used engineers before and make it MORE grindy. Cool...

I don't think either of those things is true. Existing modifications are left unchanged or more easily improved if desired; and the new system to me is more straight forward with less RNG and grind with guaranteed improvements and mats trader.

just thought I'd say I love the engineer changes.

Purchase secondaries always getting better and not having to figure out what 9n earth better even means far more simple and all round just better thanks fdev!!

Gets the thumbs up from me - well done FDev guys and gals

It's a big like from me. My least favourite part of engineering was sitting around waiting for certain types of materials (HGE signal sources, wake scanning, etc.). Now there are no useless materials, I can collect as I go, trade them for what I need, do some rolling, and go right back to playing. Having to do more rolls to get modules up to G5 is a small price to pay for that.

You've been here long enough. Was it ever any different?

You would hope that by now, some lessons would have been learned! ;)

This whine fest is a surprise to me though actually. I thought there were more players who used the existing system enough to understand the value of these changes.

Then again, I have thousands of hours invested in engineering ships using the existing system. I know it like the back of my hand. These whiners obviously don't. Otherwise they would not be losing their S over what is going to provide some significant improvements for the majority of players who use this feature.

The fact that the HUGE increase of the material and data storage has soared completely over the heads of this same group of complainers is another one of those [wacko] moments today. ;)

I like it. I still think the weapons are way too powerful and are only that way as a poorly fitting band-aid on the problem of combat logging.

The level of ridiculousness in the whining is a good measure of the update's quality, imho. Ridiculous whining means there really isn't anything substantial to whine about. :D
What surprised me is that the usual suspects didn't even wait to try the beta to start pulling rubbish out of the end of their spines.

So, grade 1-4 remain completely useless on most modules and serve as nothing more than a grind wall before grade 5.

Like this person who complains that lower tiers of engineering are less powerful than higher ones... Nuff said.

At least each 'spin' is an improvement on your way to 5...rather than being a failure and waste of time and mats.

Special effects are not random, but can be purchased. They will stay when you further upgrade. Each roll is always better, and you go from G1 to G5 per module. You can store 100 per type of data/mat, and trade for stuff you dont have. So basically just play the game, collect what you get, trade for what you dont and get guaranteed upgrades for your stuff. You can also keep upgrading stuff away from engineer bases, but then you cant buy special effects.

But something something dont like exploring/SRV/mining/missions/CZ/RES or anything lese something something grind something something not competitive something something respect my time.
And it also works from the top down, gather the grade 5 materials and trade down for the lower level rolls. Whats not to love.

I am curious as to why anyone thinks that Grade 1-4 is "completely useless". As someone with mostly only G3 upgrades, I noticed an immediate improvement in my modules from the very first upgrade. Still, I guess if you're a grinding PvP'er who is obsessed with God Rolls.....then I can see why they might feel that way. What a cold & depressing world they must inhabit though!
