Galnet Audio: The most useless thing in the whole game?

I really hope you can change the language independent of your game's localization. I'm a huge audio nerd and this coupled with the new in game ship voice tickles me pink. The rngineers update blows huge chunks but such a toxic system is going be dire no matter how many coats of paint you throw on it. Ah well, everything else has been exciting!

Just one question - why? Seriously, why? IMO, this text-to-voice engine is the biggest waste of developer time. Do you really think someone would use it?

I'm more excited about Galnet Audio than any other update announced.

Why?
Elite has more 'dead time' than any other game that has ever existed. Super cruise is valuable and I wouldn't change the travel distances, but there is literally nothing to do for vast tracts of time. That is why people listen to podcasts and watch Netflix. People are trying to find ways to entertain themselves while playing a video game!?

I want as much stuff in Galnet Audio as possible. I'm hoping they increase the in game lore content by x100.
Give me a constant audio feed of not just specific current events but of random tidbits of Elite history and lore.
It would be great if its specific to systems you're travelling through. You could learn about Imperial, Federation and Alliance history.
Put in story events from the various novels and lore bibles as you're passing through specific areas, etc....

It could totally change the way people play the game.

I can't wait....

"Cliched evil politician + 1 power play point"
"Lunatic imperial advocate - 3 power play points"
"Crazed technocrat + 2 power play points"
"Badboy dreadlock pirate person -2 power play points"
"Blackburn Rovers 2 - Leeds United 1"
"Fisher, dogger, German bight"

As someone quite rightly said before....the voice is not the issue, I can read just fine. The content is the problem, make it interesting or at least something other than powerplay and the next CG, the last CG, the CG before that, I might actually read / listen / whatever.

Will it be available in the beta test? Good because then I will know whether I use , how I use it and when I use it.

Let's all complain about something that hasn't even been implemented in game yet.......... not.

This thread was DOA.

If I am in Super-Cruise, then I want to focus on that.....but still hear the news as I travel.
This. I don’t have to read and drive anymore.

I find it hilarious that people are so appalled by this feature. Do you really think it took that much time and money to develop? Text-to-speech is practically ancient technology at this point. It’s not rocket science.

Its the ED forums. Anything you dont like took a billion man hours, and if it hadnt been included all your dreams would have come true. :)

I will use it because it feels more live and depht in the game and hope it will be more like this in future :)

I son’t think it’s that they’re appalled by the text-to-speech part, but by the fact that it was given to a feature that even at the best of days can really only be called ‘uneventful’ and ‘meaningless’.

Now if they added more lore, now that would be a different story. Personally, I’m hoping this festure will incentivise hem to do just that.

P.s: Does anyone know if it’s possible to filter galnet articles and go all the way back to day 1?

As its been demonstrated so far, sure I can see how it doesn't appear to throw up anything particularly new or useful, certainly nothing that HCS/EDDI users havent already grown used to.

But like FDev have demonstrated before, sometimes they add in the bare bones of a system, and then revisit it later to flesh it out later.

From what I've read, some of what Galnet audio will do is dynamic, and I'd imagine scriptable beyond simply reading news feeds and flight events. Imagine flying through a system and getting a audio message asking for help with a mission, or a call to arms to help with some situation that's developing in the region as a result of the BGS or something? It'd be a great improvement on the current "tip off" messages (and the like) that we get at the moment.

Alternately, it could become a really interesting story telling tool in a game where people have already complained that the "story" is often difficult to actually find. I saw a great example on twitter a few hours ago for example, where someone has already created some kind of fake pirate broadcast. Perhaps we'll see player submitted news opening up again, or maybe theyll just flesh out the world narrative system for us in a new, and more accessible way.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not ready to begin fervently extolling the virtues of the galnet audio system, but I'm interested to see where they go with it. If they use it well, it could become significantly more than just a tool to listen to a couple of articles here and there.

It may start with Galnet, but the potential of having such a system integrated into the game is huge! Eventually I would see this expanding to additional voice feedback on event in the ship, reading tourist beacons or other info that is not already voice acted, NPC chatter, NPC interactions & allow much more variety in other things already voice acted like docking. I can't wait to see this expand over future updates. Will really bring the game to life.

For me I think it will be muted almost immediately. From the fdev video it sounds annoying and a text to speech is not what I call immersive. Useless for me im afraid.

You don't really need to mute it, you just have to not play it in the first place. It won't play on its own.
