Good resources for Elite Lore

Hiya folks,

I've started writing a story in the Elite universe and would really like to learn more about elite lore. Can anyone suggest web sites and so on that would be good for me to read. Especially Thargoid lore!!

Thanks!

Hi I have found inara.cz an incredible resource and its a single point website that has most of the info available- so its convenient.

I've started writing also, chronicling some of my antics online (and extrapolating slightly - adding some artistic license ;-))

Do you mean official or not?

The only official stuff is GalNet and anything else you can find in game (eg system descriptions, tourist beacons, etc) and anything in official fiction (books and RPGs, possibly also Escape Velocity audio drama). Anything that FDev have said or written in videos, streams, podcasts, fan radio or on their website or forums is semi official - you can believe it until it's corrected or retracted etc.

Anything in earlier Elite games or in their official fiction you can use as a guide but don't depend on it, especially if it's contradicted by E: D.

Anything else you find on the internet that isn't copied from these sources is NOT official AFAIK, even if it's written by a generally accepted "loremaster".

Looking forward to reading it!

The Elite Dangerous Wiki is pretty good (and getting better all the time) with sorting Lore from "what people reckon": http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Elite_Dangerous_Wiki

Also there's Galnet's extensive archives, which are easy to search on this site: http://ed.frank-heinrich.net/index.php?title=Galnet_Collection_News_Articles

And a magazine called Sagittarius Eye is also pretty good at fact checking and issue #5 happens to have a bunch of Thargoid related stuff... http://www.sagittariuseyes.com/ Totally not at all plugging the excellent team involved...

It's worth triple checking things from (everywhere, but especially) places like Inara and Alioth etc. they are really cool, but not necessarily ED Lore. ED Lore is anything in-game, Galnet, or published directly with the permission of Fdev (so, all the novels and the RPG's are all Lore, but the game trumps anything else, obviously). Previous games are not Lore strictly - there's a lot in them that is used in ED, and a lot that influences ED, but I tend to go by "until it appears in ED in some way, it's just a story". For example, Jaques and his travelling space station are from the FE2 companion short stories, INRA from FFE, GalCop from Elite '84, etc. All are ED Lore, but often with some tweaks from how they originally appeared.

For Thargoid materials that go beyond what we have in ED - Frontier First Encounters is a great resource (although, with the above caveats), this is an archive of the Journals from that game: http://www.dream-ware.co.uk/first-encounters/journals/all/

Good luck!

I dont mind, but from the perspective of a book, i'm not sure how much scope frontier give for being creative around lore!

Well... since you've asked on the forums I assume that your story is not officially sanctioned by FDev yet; you don't have a licence yet, is that right? If you get a licence, they should give you all their secret writers' fiction guides that were written back in 2013 and have been given to officially sanctioned authors. I see you're a member of the Hammers of Slough - Kate Russell should be able to tell you all about them. However, I think they're restricted by NDA so she might not be able to share them with you.

However, if you're not concerned about your work being officially sanctioned then it doesn't really matter whether FDev agree with your interpretation of the lore - get creative! We're looking forward to reading your work :)

I realise that it's "Elite lore" and not necessarily "ED lore", but the best information source for Thargoids in terms of their physical description, environment and behaviour is the short story "Genuine Thargoid", which can be found in "Further Stories of Life on the Frontier", which came with the "Frontier: First Encounters" (FFE) game.

Edit to add: dug the book out. The author of this particular short story was Moira Sheehan.
