[FUN] Would you play Elite Dangerous if, as with 1984, you could only fly the Cobra Mk III?

I actually did that for more than 3 years.

I started* the game in my Cobra Mk III "The Dancing Groigan" and have been flying it mostly** exclusively from Gamma in 2014 until October 2017 (When I bought an Anaconda).

* "Independent Trader" tier at the Kickstarter: something sounded right to me about starting the game in Lave with a Cobra and only 100 credits.

I did almost the same. Picked the "Pirate" option in the Kickstarter because I wanted the nostalgic start option (but didn't want to pay the extra for Independent Trader), and stuck with my Cobra until I wanted more cargo space for trading (so not very long).

I kept the Cobra though, but haven't flown it for years...

Surely, if the game stated from the beginning "With little more than 100 Cr and a Cobra Mk III to your name, blaze your trail through the galaxy."

If no ships were promised in the KS or anything like that, I'd be 100% happy. All the dev and design work that went into programming and designing 30 odd ships at a level suitable for first person operation could have been channeled into other assets to create a more varied world with much more interesting stations, bases, facilities and so on.

I mean, come on, how hard is it to add even different colour vehicles driving round the insides of the station.... Why all yellow?
Shadows at the windows of the control towers suggesting movement within.

Robots or skimmers inside the station making it look like something is happening.

Moving mechanical arms in the foundry stations. Robot arms tending the crops in agri stations.

Couples walking in the parks in the luxury stations...

Heck, even Sim City 4, 13 years ago managed it:

(yes, I know it was isomorphic bitmaps...)

IMO, these would add more immersion than different ships anyway. But some people love ships more than anything, so....

I probably couldn't stick with it. My first Elite game was FFE. And while I liked the cobra mk3, my favorite ships were the FFE imperial courier & trader. And only the cutter gives me the closest "feel" and look to them.

I dunno.

I like monkeying around with ships so the more ships there are, the happier I am.

If I could buy a whole heap of CM3s and engineer them all in different ways, I'd probably be happy.
if the game didn't allow for ship customisation, probably not.

Honestly I would.

Don't expect this to be a serious thread. 'Tis just a laugh.

But would you?

The game would have to have very satisfying, immersive gameplay loops.

X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter is a good example... most of the "ships" were identical in look/feel/etc. but their missions were engaging, active... voiced... scripted... etc.

I am trying to get to Elite in a Cobra, so already doing that. However its slow and frustrating progress, because the game teases you to go to bigger ships. Mission board!

The OP's question is too broad, I think.

If I came to E|D with that stipulation then yes. Absolutely.

But having had the chance to fly many, many ships I'm not sure I could now restrict myself to just one, even the mighty Cobra III.

Grey pretty sums up how I think of this. Don't get me wrong, I still like to pootle around in the Cobra from time to time just for giggles... but my current favourites do not include the Cobra so I wouldn't want to lose the ability to fly them having tasted the grass on this side of the fence.

No. I wouldn't. Because it was built, then, based on machine capability. It's built, now, based on exactly the same thing. We can do more, because the machine can, relatively speaking. The good news, is that you can play the original still. It's in the frontier store. :)

Yes. I've made a point with my main account to only fly the Cobra MkIII - The second account I use to fly everything else... Except I haven't loaded that account for a long, long time now as I got bored of the other ships.

That's "Mr. Grey" to you :)

I spend most of my time flying the Cobra MkIII anyway (it's the best ship in the game), so yes.

Not really. the biggest frustration of Rebirth was only having the Skunk to fly, regardless of the upgrades you put on it. In ED, if I'm exploring or trading my nearly maxed non-engineered (yet) T6 is pretty good. If I want to engage in combat, then I'm going to wait until I can afford an Asp or imp Courier as, while I do have a largely vanilla Cobra squirrelled away, it just doesn't quite seem to fit my requirement for a mixed purpose vehicle.
