So who's on the Haggis tonight then? We will be love a bit of haggis me.

If you're squeamish do not read eh description of it's ingredients...

Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver, and lungs); minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, traditionally encased in the animal's stomach

I remember telling my kids when they were little that the wild Haggis has shorter legs on one side so they could stand straight on the side of mountains....

Not sure why it's illegal in the US though ;)

If there isn't haggis on the menu at home tonight then I'll be buying one and cooking it for myself at the weekend.

It's amazing how many people can be tempted to try it, like it, then suddenly go off the idea of it when they are told what it is composed of....

Tastes fantastic... I won't go down the origin of the Haggis route though I know it can upset my Celtic Cousins. :p

Really, haggis is illegal in the USA? Now I did not know that.

Wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim'rous beastie o, what a pannic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty, I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee!

Haggis is not "illegal" per se, it is illegal for stores to sell it. No law against eating the stuff if you can get the ingredients to make it at home.

I think the USDA's concern is that sheep's hearts, lungs, etc. are considered to be throwaway items, usually discarded, probably used as feed for other animals and they do not want large butcher factories shoveling them up off the floor of the abattoir and selling them. o7

IIRC it's illegal to import due to ingredients, but I think that it's made there without certain things.

Well I've got my haggis catcher net and i'm off to catch a fresh one...

Haggis sounds pretty good to me. I was raised in the "bush" of Alaska, without the amenities of modern civilization, and my family was probably somewhere 3-4 economic rungs below depression era poverty levels. Us kids learned real quick that if we were lucky enough to see something land on the dinner table we were to shut up and eat it. Fond memories of beaver meat stew and sucking the marrow from moose bones.

Haggis: A catalogue of atrocities committed against a sheep, culminating in a good meal.

Very partial to haggis personally. Sadly can't attend any suppers tonight, but I'll be raising a glass to him (despite the fact that he was a gauger at one time!)

Being Eastern European born, it really sounds delicious, and I want to try it.

Oh yes... I'll be having a few drams of a few single malts just to stick with tradition you understand.
