I don't know how many of the developers will end up seeing this, but I just wanted to give a heartfelt thanks to all of the moderators, designers, programmers, artists, writers and everyone else involved in the development of Elite: Dangerous.
I have spent many hundreds of hours immersed in the universe of Elite, and I have had both a lot of fun and also frustration. Despite the times I have been upset, over the years this has consistently been one of the few games that has stuck with me throughout all the changes that life has brought me. Every day, I see many comments on various social platforms that are extremely hostile and rude towards the people who spend their lives working on this game. I do not want to dismiss the grievances that players have with the game, as it is not perfect, but I think that many people are just far too harsh or cruel. I don't see much vocal appreciation for the immense amount of work that has gone into the stellar forge, geographic simulations, physics models, art and not to mention all of the research that goes into making believable economies, governments, characters, content, and lifeforms. A lot of player feedback is valid, but some people will always be angry and irrational no matter what is done. However, even though the game can always be improved and will probably always be imperfect, Elite has achieved things nothing short of mind-blowing and inspirational. For the flaws it has, as a community, we can still choose to be constructive and provide helpful ideas and thoughts instead of just saying "boring!" or "game sucks!" or "xyz should be fired!" I read a lot of complaints that claim no one at FDev listens to the community, and that is simply not true. Livestream after livestream and forum post after forum post, player concerns are directly addressed or at least acknowledged (though devs do not have to agree with every suggestion). Even though some players may be silent, there are many of us who really love the game and appreciate all the hard work that goes into it; even though some of us may not say it too much. I don't think anyone with a clear and rational mind can say that Elite is not a labor of love, and that it has not made huge steps forward in the industry.
I don't expect that every video game is going to please every type of player, but I just wanted to bring some positivity and encouragement. No matter who you are, it feels bad when others say mean things about you when bleed, cry, and sweat to give people entertainment. The devs aren't perfect, but they do always strive to please players, whether or not it feels like it at times. So on behalf of myself and many of the more reserved members of the community, thank you for the incredible game that you have created, and I look forward to continuing to be a part of this community and universe for years to come.
