General / Off-Topic Researching to find out, which SVOD service is the most popular in the UK

Hi Commander o7,

I’m doing a study for my dissertation on whether subscription video on demand is helping to reduce video piracy in the UK, but before I ask people to tell me whether they watch or have watched pirated content. I would first like to know whether people subscribe to a subscription video on demand provider, and if they do, which provider they use.

The study is aimed at people who live in the United Kingdom and is open for anyone to view and complete.
There are only 8 questions being asked, with not all questions requiring to be answered.

Questions being asked are anonymous, is for study reasons only, and will be open until the 28th February 2018.

If you want to help with this study, but do not want to complete the questionnaire, please share for others to view and complete.
Below is the link to the questionnaire, if you would like to help with this study:

Done.

What I’ll add is this: a few years ago (4 or 5 ish) I came to a decision - I would no longer obtain any content illegally. Basically, I would cease to use BitTorrent. I’m reasonably well off, so I decided to simply buy everything on dvd/Blu-ray (not all at once!), and take up Netflix. I haven’t regretted this.

I’ve also spent the last few years encoding all my media and storing them on a NAS and getting Plex configured the way I like it, so I now have my own curated version of Netflix.

Thanks GreyAreaUK for completing the questionnaire, and for information regarding your decision to not source illegal content due to SVOD, particular Netflix in general.

I also like that you are using a private cloud to manage your own movie collection.

This hold for me as well. Though Synolog's own Video package rather than Plex

Just to be clear, my decision wasn’t based on Netflix but the availability of most content on dvd. Netflix (and Amazon Prime Video) are bonuses, but my decision would have been the same without them.

If by subscription you mean things like Netflix then no, I don't ... but I do buy the films and TV shows on Google Play which I can then watch as many times as I like forever on a mobile device or Youtube ... but I am unsure if that counts as a subscription service in your definition.

EDIT: To clarify, I don't consider buying the film/TV show on Google Play a subscription as I'm paying once for each film/TV show just like if I was buying a DVD/BluRay. In my definition a subscription is a monthly payment, not a pay once per item.

Thanks for clarifying my mistake of what you posted, and letting me know your change of attitude towards sourcing content illegally, was a personal decision.

Hi Alien, Google Play comes under the transactional video on demand model and Youtube comes under the advertisement video on demand model. These two models are separate to the subscription video on demand model, where people subscribe to access the whole catalogue of films and TV shows available by services like Netflix, but thanks for letting me know.

If you haven't already Alien, there is a box you can select to say that you do not subscribe to a subscription video on demand service in the questionnaire.

Hi, if you have time, could you participate in completing this short questionnaire with a maximum of 9 questions, to help me with my dissertation. I will be posting a second and last questionnaire soon™ with a maximum of 14 questions.

Only 4 more people needed to participate with this questionnaire, before I submit the second questionnaire, which will be more closely related to the consumption and sourcing of video piracy in the UK. Thanks again, to all those, who have already completed, and submitted this questionnaire :)

Looking for two more people to complete this questionnaire. It only takes an average of 86 seconds to complete, and will be available till the end of this month, if I get more than two people participating. Thank you :)

Personally I would pinch a lot of films off lime wire and other torrent sites mainly because they were so hard to get hold of. Since streaming services like Xbox 360s,PS4’s, and Netflix I haven’t touched a torrent.

It took the film and music industries far too long to catch up with technology.

JonnyC0mbat, that is what I am researching on. If SVOD is helping to reduce video piracy.

I will be posting the second questionnaire soon™ relating to what you have said.

The problem is that many platforms such as Spotify are good for the consumer, and large labels with huge back catalogues, but pretty disastrous for young artists. While the industry needed to move, I hope the general public also comes to accept that 'all music in the world for a tenner' isnt a sustainable format either. Its like how buying a pair of jeans for five bucks is better than outright stealing jeans, but we all know those jeans weren't made by proud and happy tailors. Its a a race to the bottom that is very hard to resist on an individual level, but as a society we must deal with this at some point or another.

Although my research is only looking at films (movies) and TV shows, I agree that media creators do need money to keep creating good products, but, creators who cannot afford to publicise their creations or haven't had the luck of being spotted, do need a platform to display their works.

One example of this is 'Journey Quest', a D&D role playing series that I would never have watched or seen, if I didn't have an Amazon Fire stick.

I'm not in the industry under discussion, but I completely agree with you; many people have a tendency to be lazy creatures all to eager to follow the path of least resistance, blithely sucking up the creativity, ingenuity and hard work of others for nickles on the dollar. One of the many reasons for my Randian world view point:)
