[FUN] Would you play Elite Dangerous if, as with 1984, you could only fly the Cobra Mk III?

Short answer is yes.

But one of the great things, or was, is that different ships have different specialisms so that each category has its own play style. This adds a lot to the game. Engineers have significantly diminished this aspect though, making all ships capable of all things.

My favourite role for my Cobra was smuggling and I hope to see that return to all its glory soon.

The OP's question is too broad, I think.

Grey pretty sums up how I think of this. Don't get me wrong, I still like to pootle around in the Cobra from time to time just for giggles... but my current favourites do not include the Cobra so I wouldn't want to lose the ability to fly them having tasted the grass on this side of the fence.

If you get a knock on the door from the inquisition, I didn't send them... :p

The Cobra makes for a great exploration ship, provided you're not trying to race across the galaxy as fast as possible. Nice supercruise pitch rate for fuel scooping on the fly too.

It's a solid ship. Perhaps not quite so much in comparison since the Engineers came out, but still one that's well worth using now and then, in my opinion.

Wait...there’s an option to play ED outside of a Cobra?! Sacrilege! And a pox on all your house!

Seriously though, I’m pretty happy in my Cobra - actually I was pretty fond of my starter Sidewinder as well...mmm. Maybe Im not dreaming big enough...

Well, back to project fly a Cobra to a nebula. I hear the Crab Nebula is wonderful this time of year. Great seafood.

Yes I would, but would I have played as long as I have already (day 1 Alpha til now) Probably not!

Having multiple ships to do different things is what brings many people back to the game each day.

Sounds delightful. Save me a seat at the table.

Sorry, not my Cobra...

Cobra would be a fine ship to take there though. I've just been a little spoiled by my Vulture.

...

Anyway, I plan on taking my Cobra out to Beagle Point sometime this year. Got caught up with Obsidian Orbital a bit and now with the new beta and the Chieftain coming out.

In principle, yes.
There are many games where you only ever occupy one "vessel".
Vessel other than spaceship or any other sort of vehicle, i mean a single vessel with which you play a game, that can be a human vessel too.
You only ever occupy one vessel in "Doom" or "The Witcher" for example.
For that to work, ED would have had to be a very different game though.
I know, the question really was if i'd play the current ED with only a Cobra available to me.
The answer to that is much shorter:
No.

I did triple elite in a Sidewinder, so a Cobra would be luxury.

The only thing I wish is that we could have the smart bombs from the original game, which should only be available to commanders that have stayed clean for a prolonged length of time. Can you imagine getting ganked by a wing of SDC? One press of the launch button and they're all metal vapour facing the rebuy screen shouting "!"

"ENERGY BOMBS

An energy bomb will be offered for sale at a planet of Tech level 7 or higher, and can be used only once. It is activated by the TAB key and will destroy all other ships, asteroids, and missiles in the vicinity.Energy Bomb Specification: Medusa Pandora Self Homing Energy Bomb (available at Tech Level 7 worlds or higher) is a tactical weapon capable of Megazon Destruct Force 13. Has heat radius of 900 km. Developed by Klaus-Kline laboratories for multi- role combat using "launch-and-leave" techniques."

Why would anyone want to fly other ships than the Cobra Mk 3?

play in VR and the answer is apparent...... ;)

(I love the cobra but most of the cockpits in ED offer a different experience...

claustrophobia in the eagle / taipan
decadence in the clipper/cutter
that "startrek" bridge feeling in the anaconda
(or the sailing an oil tanker feeling)
or the shear amazing view in the Lakon ships.

For that, there's "Space Legs".

Now you're making me regret settings Space Legs Sally on an Asp:

(I tried a Cobra first of course, but the hull is just too flat and wedge shaped to give a nice layout)

Didn't even have to look to know you made this thread, unicorn

On-topic, I absolutely would. Some of my best memories in this game are from my early days with my friends, just starting out in our cobras, running smuggling missions and teaming up for the occasional pirate lord in an anaconda

Good Times...
