It's a mechanism that supports consensual PvP well too so I don't see a problem.
Consensual pvp is (usually) conducted between players with crimes off. The attackers had crimes on.
Read the words you quoted.
I didn't read the whole lot of the tread so this suggestion might have been made already:
Maybe it would be usefull to have three options for "report crimes against me" instead of the binary on/off:
- off
- report only
- report and call for support
The OP could then use the second option, the attackers would become wanted but the police won't show up.
What do you think?
Sorry if I didn't read 30 pages of thread but... am I the only one to think that if someone that has "Report Crimes ON" attacks a clean ship, the ship should report themselves to the authorities for aggression?
I did. 'supports consensual pvp well, too', I don't believe that's correct, because as I say, 'consensual' pvp doesn't involve police (usually), so consensual pvpers usually have crimes turned off.
If I'm missing something, feel free to treat me like I'm stupid, I didn't get much sleep last night.

It's "report crimes against me", not merely "report crimes"
It's "report crimes against me", not merely "report crimes"
Oh, I get it.
So I can switch to OPEN, have REPORT CRIMES turned ON for myself, then look for people who usually PvP (with crimes OFF) and attack them.
This way I get part of my re-buy refunded in case I am destroyed, police pops in to help me defeat the guy I opened fire on, they get jack, and on top of that they get bounty on their heads.
And that works as intended? Hahaha!
Well yes, in this case it should be changed to "report all crimes" - the former is clearly way too exploitable.
Right, so if I get mugged in a dark alley, and happen to not call the cops, and then get a knife in my ribs, that's my fault for not calling cops.
Furthermore, if muggers call the cops instead, because while trying to avoid being mugged I happened to punch them in the face, immediate thing coppers will do upon arrival is to arrest me for trying to defend my wallet, and ignore muggers and their knife stuck in my rib cage, as well as missing wallet. Cause I didn't call them, but muggers happened to have.
That makes so much logical sense it's Benny Hill-worthy.
Again, 21st century (in fact, 19th century) constitutional rights have escaped 34th century civilization. Because he turned his cell phone off while being mugged. LOL
Yes, I would. Unless I forgot to switch it on, but I happen to be expert in martial arts and perfectly capable of defending myself. If you get stabbed in the back alley (ooh-err) you would want the police to help you. If there was an automatic crime reporting gadget you would want it switched on in that circumstance, right?
Unless you were a wanted criminal, in which case maybe you would call a buddy to come get you (and maybe sort out mister stabby too).

How does that deny me the right to defend myself? And how does that logically make me the offender?
Indeed it may be, but I like the idea. That reporting crimes is a hardwired part of your ship and so works for all crimes in systems where the feature is supported. By turning off you are technically doing something you probably shouldn't (a bit like bent coppers covering their collar number ID when being shady). I have no problem with the report crimes but don't request backup option. But I like this idea too personally
I like this solution too.
I can totally see the OP's frustration with the current system and was going to suggest a compromise that the report crimes ON/OFF feature be tweaked so that it's part of a justice network that while it will log crimes against you it also grasses you up and logs the crimes you commit as well, even things like carrying contraband, a very good reason for having it turned off if you're thinking of doing anything illegal.
