General / Off-Topic Altered Carbon

Has anyone else watched it yet?

It's pretty good.

Oh man, thanks for this post. I had no idea they started yet.
I read the trilogy and loved it.

EDIT:
They are already 10 episodes in? I have been sleeping the past months apparently.

I watched the pilot and about to go finish episode 2, so far I'm really liking it.

Sort of a Blade Runner-ish knock off??

Looks promising!

I have seen 5 episodes so far and to be honest I am very disappointed for all kinds of reasons.
Too many unimaginative movie cliches for my taste.
And the quasi philosophical dialogues and the horrible cliche humour, and the very often overblown drama are making me cringe.
Also the special effects, the decors etc, at times feel cheap to me.
And the acting is not the best either.

Perhaps it gets better eventually.

I was extremely surprised to see the high score at imdb for something so mediocre.

What is it about?

What attracts me in the books is the noir hardboiled detective atmosphere combined with cyberpunk.
The books are full of great ideas about cloning technology and what that will do to a society and to the human individuals in that society.
Human bodies are treated like interchangeable and disposable sleeves by those who can afford it. Some people can even afford to live forever.

I've heard good things about this series so far, but haven't watched any of it yet. From descriptions I've gotten from friends, it's going to be very appealing to fans of the transhumanism genre.

Lol, you may have opened a can of worms with that one.

It's just good fantasy sci-fi. Parallels to the Transhumanism Genre are certainly evident. Although that's an opinion coming from a Cis-Human, stable genius perspective, so it may not be relevant...

Ha! Rep for the pun there.

But "transhumanism" is just humanity transcending our mortal bodies. The concept of being able to "back up" our consciousness and re-upload to a new body ("sleeve") is one that features prominently in the tabletop RPG Eclipse Phase. (They even used the term "sleeve" first in this context.)

Indeed.

I just found the parallel insightful, when the protesters were outside the clinic. Not a spoiler, just an observation.

;-)

It's really quite good. Nice to have this on Netflix and fargo season 3 has dropped on also. Plenty of good watching.

just watched this, full, was gonna post a suggestion and found about this thread.

this has been a most refreshing virtual dip into pure, classic cyberpunk. visiting all core themes. some of them without much depth, even naive at times, but still. if you're a fan of the genre this is a must watch.
