PvP Tournament - Every Sunday

I want to see how viable setting up player-run events will be in Elite Dangerous and maybe work out the best way to go about it. I think beta is a good time to start testing stuff like this. The Aulin Apocalypse at the end of premium beta was (I think) the first player organised event of sorts and proved pretty successful - lots have commented on how they enjoyed it.

So maybe something similar could be arranged, on a smaller scale, but on a regular weekly basis (keep it weekly so it gives regular participants time to recuperate their losses).

So would anyone be interested in a weekly PvP tournament?

I'm just putting the feelers out for this to see if there is enough interest to set one up.

Participants would all join the same private group the day the tournament starts and arrange to meet at a specific location at a specific time. In theory this should only match fellow group members together and keep all other players in Open play out of the instances created for the event.

Basic outline...

Location:
  • Dahan Resource Extraction Site

Time:
  • Sunday 10th August : 8pm - 10pm GMT [19:00 - 21:00 UTC Gametime)
  • Add your CMDR name to the list and join group: "Erimus"

Rules :
  • Don't attack fellow participants who are leaving the station with their weapons stowed i.e. no sniping players leaving the docking hub.
  • Switch off "Report Detected Crimes" and "Report Crimes Against Me" on your functions panel.

Format:

  • Sunday 10th August: Sidewinder free-for all - Everyone fly's a Sidewinder and its one man vs the universe.
  • Sunday 17th August: Possibly Team match up - Team A [Sidewinders & Vipers] vs Team B [Eagles & Cobras].
  • Sunday 24th August: Possibly Mix and match - bring whatever you are prepared to lose.

If you're interested and can offer ideas of a good location, or tournament formats, please put your name down and share your ideas...

Location:
To be decided (must be somewhere that sells most types of equipment and ships so players can re-ship and re-equip ASAP and get back into the fight).

Time:
Every Sunday 8pm - 10pm GMT

Rules :
  • Don't attack fellow participants who have their weapons stowed and are leaving the station after re-equipping after a fight i.e. no sniping players leaving the docking hub.
  • Don't bring anything you can't afford to lose.

Format:

To be decided but could be something along the lines of..
  • Sidewinder free-for all - Everyone flys a Sidewinder and its one man vs the universe.
  • Team match up - Team A [Sidewinders & Vipers] vs Team B [Eagles & Cobras].
  • Mix and match - bring whatever you are prepared to lose.

I'd be game! Sign me up! (CMDR Zephyr Borealis)

If I could add a suggestion, it would be a tournament style 1v1 bracket. All ships allowed! If you want to bring your Anaconda, go ahead, but I'm sure my viper will tear it to shreds :D

Good, so its not just me then :)

Yeah, if someone wants to risk an Anaconda, they can. But they would be something everyone makes a beeline for so I'm not sure anyone would be foolish enough to bring something like that.

They're welcome to, of course :)

Maybe there could be a different format each week.

Week 1 - Sidewinder free for all
Week 2 - Team match up
Week 3 - Mix and match
Week 4 - 1 v 1 face offs

...and then repeat the sequence?

Good luck with this. not really my cup of tea, but its things like this that make sandbox games Great!

Not sure how you are going to get round the bounty/police involvement, but i hope you are able to sort it out.

I'll be up for this and I'm sure I'll be able to bring quite a few people too. I'll post this up on our fleet's site and see if there is any interest.

Have it in the LP98 system at some location, no bounties involved.

You can also deactivate the automatic "report crimes against me" and "report any crime in vicinity" functions in the right panel in order to fight each other without incurring bounties.

Yeah, somewhere were conflict doesn't create a police response. My only concern is finding somewhere like that that has a station that sells plenty of different mods and weapons, and a decent selection of ships so players don't have to travel light years to re-equip and re-join.

That's cool. I forgot about that option. This would possibly open up the number of locations that could be used to stage these events.

I'll need to test this out.

Remember to quote the list in post#1 and add your commander name to it if you want to take part, as only the names listed will be invited to the private group on Sunday.

How about mouse users vs joystick jockeys

Add me to the list

One problem though that I see with team games is lack of ability to create bespoke factions.

I was thinking that if the matches were conducted say 10km off the bow of the dreadnought at federal distress then we would 1) be able to use the federal/eranin faction system and 2) get a +ve rather than -ve bounty for kills.

I think until more group options are added we're stuck with loose associations rather than specific teams.

In the team match up I mentioned, it would be a case of anyone who turns up in a Viper would assume Sidewinder pilots are their ally and leave them alone, and only go after Eagles and Cobras... something along those lines.

Another thing to note, I don't see a way of seeing who comes out a victor in these various tournaments, so I guess its just the taking part that counts

That's a good idea for the team match up tournament. But instead of fighting 10km away, instead have fighting around the dreadnought itself? It would be so much fun in a big player v player battle.

With the npcs there too it would be a really good stress test for FDEV.

Count me in. Ingame name: Rand Haginen.

I like the free sidewinder idea with basic equipment a lot. No hassle, same for everybody. Only skill and luck not equipment counts. Easy to reship - fast and dirty and no fitting thoughts (eve like) required.

love to, but can't guarantee the time :p

however, as I'm still in a sidewinder, pirate hunting, I think anything less manoeuvrable will be crap for me

*edit* correcting crappy spelling of manoeuvrable from maneuverable

Should be able to use one of the rooms on our Teamspeak server for this. I'll ask to make sure but should be OK.
Since in game communication isn't fully fleshed out an external VOIP app is probably required for this.
We will probably need to add each other as friends too so that we get in the same instance.

There's a few issues I can think of that may cause disruption to these types of events.

One would be a player turning up to a Sidewinders-only tournament in an Anaconda and just wasting everyone. There will always be such players that will want to ruin events.

As far as I know only the group founder has the ability to kick out unsocial players, and I'm not sure if its an instant kick or if its delayed before such people vanish.

Also if the tournament attracts more than 8 players, a second instance will be created for the spill over (I think beta1 is currently capped at 8 players in any one instance). So some tournaments will seem empty or will have only two or three people to play against.

These are the issues these early player run events will have to overcome.

I think Sunday's inaugural event should be kept to a simple Sidewinder face-off, every man for himself. If it goes smoothly and people enjoy it then more interesting variations can be tried in the coming weeks.

I'm definitely interested, count me in - Helo in game.

Only problem I have, I'm across the pond so we're looking at different time zones. Maybe if this catches on we can set up something a bit closer to GMT 1:00 AM :)

I might be interested in the basic sidey one as that is all I have but I won't be around this Sunday.

A good use/test of private groups though, good idea.
