Hello!
I'm back with another brilliant/stupid idea!
This one is good for us, FD (because they make money) and even NPCs and immersion! (Maybe).
Purchasable Ship External Lights
Much like ship kits, all ships will get multiple "Lighting Mounts" all over the ship.
From outfitting, you can install any purchased lights in to any lighting mounts, and select their colour*.
The lights come in many styles, in which you can purchase separately. Each style comes with multiple colour choices included (otherwise, too many purchase options).
The lights effect the lighting of your ship, and the environment. And I guess will be pretty much the only cosmetic item to effect the galaxy. Lol
Lights can be individually toggles on and off via the modules panel.
Lighting Types
As I said, you can purchase many styles of lights, here are a list and brief description of what they do.
The lights direction will be based on where you place it on your ship. Some lights have "no direction" and will look the same no matter where you put them. Some can only be placed in certain places.
Floodlight. The floodlight is a wide angle solid light, designed to light up the local area. These are directional, so placing them on the front will point them forward. At the rear will face backwards, and so on. Default colour is white.
Spotlight. The spotlight is similar to the floodlight, except has a much longer range and tighter beam. Ideal for use on ships with poor headlights. Can only be placed facing forward. Default colour is white.
Utility Light. The utility light is a simple rotating light, similar to what you see on tractors, and other utility vehicles. It doesn't light up much except the ship, but just alerts other pilots to hazardous activity, such as mining or rescue. Default colour is orange.
Navigation Lights. Navigation lights are exactly what you expect. Typical red/green strobe lights to indicate your position and orientation to other pilots. Doesn't light up much except the ship. Default red/green.
Police Strobe. The police strobe light is also what you'd expect to see. Strobing and alternating red and blue lights, these light up a much larger area around the ship.
Basic Solid Light . A simple solid light, that doesn't light up much other than the ship, and comes in many colours.
That's it so far.
NPCs Use Lights!
Yes! NPCs should use these lights not only to show off how awesome (or annoying) they are, but also to help identify them, and add some immersion.
All NPC's use navigation lights when docking/landing.
Security use flood and police lights while responding to crime. (Just flood lights when not).
Miners and rescue ships use flood lights and utility lights when actively mining.
Thoughts?
