So I guess astronomers just discovered this particular star back in December 2017? Apparently a good candidate for "oldest star in the Milky Way". Don't bother trying to find it in the Elite galaxy map though. It isn't even registered in Simbad. Too new so it can't possibly exist in the game Elite: Dangerous.

I am therefore going anyway. it's only 36,000 light-years away from Sol. I know, I know. I had a much better chance of finding Cassiopeia A and look how that ended up.

Anyway ... for your reading pleasure: http://www.astronomy.com/news/2018/02/oldest-star-in-mw

I don't think "just discovered in Dec 17" is quite accurate. The star was part of a Sloan Digital Sky Survey Catalogue (SDSS - I don't know which release) and was selected as a candidate for the detailed study which their paper details. The paper itself is quite interesting as is their assertion that the star's carbon preponderance is in-between that seen in these types of stars where the carbon comes from the interstellar medium (produced by the earliest supernovae) and that which is a result of accretion from a binary companion.

Thanks for posting this, it made an interesting read with my Sunday breakfast.

P.S. It is said to be 7,500Ly away, not 36,000Ly so you won't have so far to travel. ;)

Thanks for the share

This star deserves its place in ED

I have not tried to locate it or determine it's position but since it is stated to be in the "halo" around the Milky Way, I doubt it will be in the game, or if inserted probably unreachable.

Yes the "halo".

The Thargoids have secret bases in the "halo", perhaps
