Been a few years now, and Elite still feels like an empty shell.

OP is correct on most points and we all know it.
We can argue a few of them and he does have a couple i disagree with.
But overall ..... this is Elite: Dangerous.

Also, we're not getting space legs or Earth like worlds. I've come to accept that now.

For those who don't know, my fully engineered Sidewinder runs a counselling service for NPC's with issues. It's a very lucrative side job- for him.

By God, if there isn't supply and demand, supporting a player driven economy in this game after all!

As long as the NPC's aren't pretending of course.

I've seen them, and many are traumatized for life. Some need immediate institutionalization. The Mistress is a harsh taskmaster.

I'm sure there's a low paying passenger mission to take some of the life-style slaves to her base though.

It's enough for some, but gives a whole new take on pinning blueprints.

This game is mostly hype and wasted/delayed potential. The best worst game ever. The equivalent of watching a bad B movie for the lulz. (In the sense that you watch it and it's fun but the movie is still bad)

Some fair points in OP's comments. I think though OP needs to hold out til end of 2018 and see just what this years updates of the core systems brings. I have a few friends who quit watching and seeing if the changes to core systems is enough to entice them back (I hope it is as I miss them). But we have to be patient and see, My fingers are crossed FD stay the course and not shortcut anything.

I dunno so much.

I think it was more about the design approach improving from this point forward, rather than wanting a different game.

Disconnecting solo from Open? Making your ships persistent after logging out? reducing the size of the galaxy to pre-beta levels? If you want a tiny game, where people are forced to stay online in an online environment, just buy Ark and be done with it. OP describes a game that is nothing like ED.

Disconnecting solo from Open?

Is indicative of the issues the game is having, so would be a solution which provides efficacy. That said, I remain unconvinced anyone including the OP actually thinks that would happen. I mean, in the absence of other options that would be, you know...better than that...but requires thought prior to Beta. Ergo, would also never happen.

Making your ships persistent after logging out?reducing the size of the galaxy to pre-beta levels?

For Open, why not? It's already EVE 0.5. Why not do things properly is what I kind of thought he meant? Speculatively like...

If you want a tiny game, where people are forced to stay online in an online environment, just buy Ark and be done with it.

Dude, quit with the false equivalencies. I'm trying to have a civilised conversation here.

OP describes a game that is nothing like ED.

I believe you have stumbled upon the OP's point.

What was yours again?

I was reading and nodding along until the part where you said the game needs more time sinks.

Nope, you completely lost me there.

If we're talking time sinks as in refuelling/unloading animations; Why not add a <SKIP> button. As in <SKIP CUTSCENE>? A win for both casuals and 'realistic' players...

I believe you have stumbled upon the OP's point.

If the point was, as you claim, that the OP wants a game that is nothing like ED, than the sensible thing is to look for another game. It is completely insane to complain a certain game is completely unlike some other fantasy game you'd like. Yes, a hamburger is nothing like a pizza. So if you want a pizza, go to a pizzeria rather than demand the burger joint somehow converts their double cheese burger into a pizza. A burger is not a badly designed pizza, the notion is again beyond daft. You dont have to like it, you may find it disgusting and frown upon people liking bugers, but expecting such completely different constructs to somehow be merged is just silly.

As for the rest, its basically the same point. You cant have permanently persistent ships without completely changing the very core of the game, rip out the networking and server infrastructure and completely replace it all. Not only is that completely unfeasible, it is also a idea profoundly disliked by many people. The sharing of different modes is a key cornerstone of ED. Always have been, always will be. If I am bored of dealing with people, I can play in solo for a bit. If I feel like meeting people, I can go to Open. Personally I play Open only on live, but that doesnt mean i want to take away the freedom of others. Because I acknowledge that is one of the foundations of ED. Everyone can make their own choices. Again, if you dislike those key ideas behind ED, that have been detailed years before release, just take your loss. Its an open forum, you may complain as much as you want, but it seems you dont even want to be constructive and only want to repeat over and over that you disagree with decisions made years ago, decisions many people feel are crucial to ED, and decisions you acknowledge will never change.

So my point is this: if you hate it all so much, if you think the key design choices are so terrible, if you accept that they will never change, then do yourself a favor and look for something that is more to your liking. :)

Thanks for a lot of great responses and support, and it’s great that there are more people out there that also feel that something is missing with the game and sure we all can't agree on stuff but thats okay, we are all different. I have put 1886 hours into this game to be exact even though the game is the way it is, I still love space simulation so much and Elite is the best one out there and with the most potential. I still play the game and I still need to fuel my need of flying around in my spaceship. I get reminded over and over for what it could have been, doesn’t mean I hate the game. Sometimes I need to ventilate all this frustration that I feel, because Development and creation runs in my blood. I know that Elite will never be like this what I wanted, but if I had free hands with this engine, oh boy I would had made something real special, and I know that Frontier spent a lot of money from earnings in Elite Dangerous to making that Theme park game, Rollercoaster Tycoon. I would rather want them to put more effort and hire more programmers and such to make Elite Dangerous for what it was meant to be.

Star Citizen, sure looks great, but I don’t feel it when I play it, it’s not the same fluid and great controls that we have in Elite and the sound effects in Elite are so much better in every way. The Super cruise in Elite Dangerous destroys the thing Star Citizen have currently, and Elite Dangerous have the potential to really become so much more, but I guess Frontier is afraid of putting to much money and effort into it. They really sitting on something special here, I wish they just could see the potential like I see it, I know, I did a lot of game development back in the day before I got sick, but I would gladly pay $15 a month to be a part of a persistent universe in Elite, with those things I explained. Clan wars and everything mattered, player housing and a lot of other nice treats, a sandbox universe in elite, wow. Imagine that! And all the possibilities for new YouTubers and Twitch Streamers that comes with it.

I know that some suggestions I wrote was little too harsh, like 8 hour cooldown when losing a ship maybe a couple of hours at the most, I don’t know . Maybe this could be in the “Universe mode” so people care about their ship and not just suicide to get a shortcut home. If people cared like they do in other games, such as EVE Online that would be fantastic.

I have seen a pattern how people feel and behave and how they react to this game and I know that I am not alone with this because I can see it with my own eyes, I played with a lot of people not that long ago and all these people was a huge fan of Elite, most of them still is, but none of them is playing currently and all those people who hanged out on discord they were bored most of the time with the game and we all had to “play” around in the game, so most things we did all day was duelling and racing in stations and in canyons on planets. We sure had fun, but end of the day, we all felt it, that it was a pretend of some sort.

For me the key pillars that this game is built on are
1) Representation of the Milky way galaxy - finally getting to what the previous games hinted at.
2) Interchangeable Open/Solo/Group modes - I think this is a novel solution
3) p2p networking - for cost reasons
4) Flight mode that is fun rather than realistic based on WW2 flight - prompting close quarter dog fighting
5) An attempt to make space feel big and to make exploration feel like an epic journey.

Those to me are core principles and should not be changed.

In my view the game has been out long enough for player fatigue to set in. The only way players continue is if their is a genuine goal or goals. Adding ships is not the answer unless they are high end. I have flown in and around Maia and the Pleiades many times and never been indicted by a Thargoid that suggests to me they are not dangerous enough.

I actually think that a lot of the problems this game has would be solved by adding a player leaderboard based on the Elite ranking over the three main areas and then for those with triple Elite rank based on money. This would give players something to aim at. This does not seem to be on the agenda but would seem to be very easy to setup, since all the player ranks are stored.

The second aspect would be to develop the multiplayer factions so its easy to create and maintain a player faction and give it goals and the ability to create objectives to attack new and defend existing territory. Hopefully this is what squadrons will be, but I am not optimistic it will go far enough. Player factions should be ranked.

The hub of all MMO's is some form of competition and that usually comes down to either gaining or losing rank or extents of control. In ED it's nebulous and it shouldn't be, for me this should have been one of the pillars the game was built on and in part it was with the triple elite ranking.

These ranks also prompt some emergent gameplay. It might pay then to gang up on a commander if you can find them, because if they lose their ship, their rebuy would potentially reduce their rank.
