General / Off-Topic The other kind of Solo

After The Last Jedi being a pathetic disappointment. I have no faith in this trilogy.

My honest opinion, as someone who has seen every Star Wars film during it's first run in the theaters, is that The Last Jedi just might be the single best Star Wars film out of the entire lot.

That said ... I'm eyeing "Solo" very carefully. Giving Han Solo a back story (when he never really needed one) risks a lot more then it potentially has to gain. Given how long it has taken the studio to even venture forth with a trailer for the film I'm surprised that they didn't opt for a direct-to-home video release.

Here is the problem with prequels ... and it is a problem I saw in the trailer for Solo ... they look more advanced than the original film or TV show they are a prequel too. The Star Trek series "Enterprise" had this problem, with the ship being more advanced than Kirk's Enterprise.

Yes the Solo film looks great and I can't wait to see it, but everything from a technology point of view doesn't fit with A New Hope as Solo looks more advanced than A New Hope. Rogue One almost got away with it, but I don't think Solo will fit as well as Rogue One did.

I'm up for this, like the trailer. Have already spotted lots of precursory 'this movie will' on t'internet of course but I'd give it a chance for sure. I also enjoyed TLJ's good energy.

I suppose people like to be all scandalised about 'their' great hero but imo, the minute he became Captain and then General Solo - as soon as he got a medal in ANH basically! - lost any real claim to immaculate conception. He's cool yes, out for himself, in a way a bit dumb .. but a shady mystery? I don't thinks so. Bring it an, the salt must flow.

All joking aside, looking forward to another grittier star wars movie in the vein of Rogue One, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I do not spend of money in the cinema to look at the Star Wars series.

But I will watch them with pleasure on the TV when the time comes

I thought Rogue One was a great war film, not just a great Star Wars film (reference Heroes of Telemark).

I've just gotten a DVD copy and I look forward to having the time to sit down and watch it again, having only seen it once at the cinema.

Pretty much how my better half regarded it.

I suspect that these standalone movies are the ones aimed at the 'Adult' Star Wars fanbase, while the new three (Awakens, Last Jedi and the final one) are aimed more at the intended market of young family cinema goers, which explains why a lot of people liked Rogue One despite having a few failings.

And I've just realised that the actor playing Solo is Alden Ehrenreich, the guy who played Hobie Doyle in Hail Caeser.

As far as I'm concerned that is an absolutely inspired bit of casting.

Supposedly, Donald Glover, Chris Miller and David Lord (of the lego movie fame) and he had a hoot.on set prior to the director.change, which supposedly was because you had two goofball actors known for improving coupled with the kind of director talent that approved of such things. It'll be interesting to see how the seriousness of Ron Howard impacts on that.

I do love that after getting booted off the project, they picked up the contract to direct a movie adaptation of Artemis, a novel by Peter Weir (of The Martian fame), which is the tale of a dashing space smugglers origins.

Way to stick it to Disney, chaps! :D

He actually did have a backstory, and from what I've seen in that clip, I get the impression they may be drawing from a (very well-written) trilogy of novels (published originally from 1979-1980) that delved into that backstory. If they're not drawing from that, fine, there's still hints and pieces and Lucas's original notes. But if they do...I'm hoping they at least do it well.

Yep, judging by the trailer they seem to be going with the vague 'Han joined the Imperial military and was thrown out' concept that has been around for a long time

I've got that trilogy of books... somewhere. I loved how they got integrated into the later Han Solo trilogy that Bantam published. They even integrated the godawful 80's Lando trilogy :D

It looks fun. It's not directly part of the Skywalker story line so as long as they show Han saving Chewies life in some awesome way, I'm fine with whatever else they do. I mean, I want it to be good of course, I just see is as a stand alone *thing* in the SW universe. Can't tell much by that 45 seconds but it did say the full trailer is tomorrow... Let's see how that looks
