Buy 2

I have always tried to specialize my fleet (AspX for exploring, types 6 and 7 for freight and mining, viper 4 for multi role, and FDL for combat) . I just love the Viper 4 and am constantly refitting it for whatever. Yesterday I bought a second Viper 4 and now have a dedicated combat version and a multi role. With how cheap these are I see no reason not to. I am already happy with the results and can now engineer the multi for different advantages than the combat boat. I know tycoons have 3 Annie's or something I just didn't think it was viable for smaller ships. I was wrong as it also helps loads with module storage. My advise is if you can't decide how to outfit these smaller ships buy 2.

Sigh...

I've been thinking about doing just this with another Clipper recently but haven't been able to get over my deeply ingrained desire for diversity and efficiency. AAAAH, IT JUST FEELS SO REDUNDANT TO HAVE MORE THAT ONE OF THE SAME SHIP!!! Lol, maybe you're right and I should just get over myself and do it :)

I generally follow this for any ship, and own two of nearly every ship, except for the Corvette and the Cutter... I can only find one use for the Corvette - as a Warship.
The Cutter, while it may be suitable for use as a Mining ship, passenger hauler, combat frigate, or freighter, I find it most useful as a combat ship as well - thus it remains a combat ship.

And, of course, the sidewinder - it has only one use - to be a starter ship, and the Hauler, because it really has none (station taxi, ultra-discount explorer notwithstanding).

I ended up modding a bunch of different weapons and then had no use for them and put em in storage. Doing this cleans that up a bit too. Oh and if you have a multiple paint pack you can actually get some use out of it.

Fleets are overrated IMO. I'd rather concentrate on making a few ships as good as possible. I would never buy two of the same model ship.

Right now I only have two ships, even though I am worth over a billion credits. I have an Anaconda that I use for exploration or passenger missions. And the Federal Corvette that I use for combat. Both are engineered AF, and have high rated modules. There is no ship in the game that can do everything well...people always point to the Anaconda as an example, but the Anaconda has many weaknesses. It is definitely not as good in combat as the Corvette (as an example).

So anyway, the point is that this applies to the smaller ships as well. Instead of buying another viper, I'd try flying other types of ships to see if you like those styles better. There's no real risk. You could always sell them later and try something else.

If you only own two small ships, module storage is not going to be a problem for you. Station-based module storage will store up to 50 modules, and it's free.

3 vipers, 2 viper IVs, 2 Eagles, 2 pythons, and a bunch of singles.

Don't just buy 2, OP. Buy them all ;)

Well I like small ships. I prefer my V4 in combat to everything else I have tried. The issue is when looking for a small multi role I can't find any other small ships that don't have other glaring defencies. Either module size is small, cockpit is offset or weapons are tiny. I am just trying to say that I have found some advantages to owning multiple versions of the same ship. I am not into fleets either. Nor am I interested in the big 3 or 5 or whatever it is now. I keep 5 or 6 ships for the 5 or 6 jobs I ocassionally do.

I think it depends on the ship. There's certain ships which have a very specific role (like the T9 for instance), so buying more than one seems futile. But there's a number of ships which can be very versatile (anaconda, python etc). Now you can either buy one and kit it out as a "jack of all trades", or you can buy more and kit them out for specific roles - The combat conda, the explonda, maybe even some sort of fleet repair or fuel rat build. Sure the chassis might be the same, but it's the modules that makes the ship. If those modules are radically different, you don't own two of the same ships. You own two ships with the same chassis.

To use a warhammer 40K analogy (2nd Ed I'm afraid as it was all downhill after 1997) - you have the imperial guard chimera - multipurpose troop transport. But there was also the hellhound. Same chassis, but it couldn't carry troops and had massive flame guns. Much more of an offensive assault vehicle. Or the hydra - same chassis again but was mounted with flak cannons for anti-aircraft. You also had the Rhino - standard 10 man APC. But the razorback used the same chassis - could still carry 5 men, but had a lascannon/plasma gun turret. And the whirlwind - same chassis again but no troop carrying potential, in favour of an enormous multi-launch missile artillery battery.

My army would have at least two of these variants at any given time. It didn't feel redundant at all.

I'm a Lakon addict"
How do you pronounce that?

Back when I was a kid, my old fella was seriously into Minis.
He knew absolutely everything about them, he could list every nut & bolt on the car from memory and I recall hour-long phone-calls where he was talking somebody through how to do something to one.
The funny thing was, because he was so familiar with the Mini, it became the solution to all sorts of non-Mini related car problems.
Somebody had an Alfa Romeo with dodgy brakes? Fit the discs and servo off a Mini.
Your Ford Cortina is overheating? Get a radiator and header tank off a Mini and it'll fix it.
Electrical problems in you FIAT? You need the distributor and coil off a mini to sort that out.

Everything could be fixed/improved via the correct application of bits off a Mini.

I think there's a similar mentality at work in lots of things, including ED.
If you're really familiar with a certain ship, know all it's advantages and weaknesses and know it's capabilities, you can probably use to to do anything at least as well, if not better, than other ships which might actually be superior.

How do you pronounce that?

Nice!

I have one of most of the useful ships:
FDL - combat
T-9 - CG cargo runs
Python - General missions / med-pad passenger
Orca - Passengers
FGS - First bug hunter
T-10 - Second bug hunter - Cos' 'giods be out there and gettin' tougher!
Annaconda - Collecting dust

Except:
ASP X - Exploring
ASP X - General bubble run around

My 2nd account was intended for exploration, but is also Elite on trade and by the time I get back to the bubble I should be Elite on Exploration too.
FDL - Combat ( only flown it a couple of times )
ASP - Exploring
Python - Everything else
I have 1 Billion credits in the bank on this account but it has never needed a Large Pad!! and I don't plan on getting a ship that requires one any time soon!

Large ships are overrated :)

Compared to my Viper 4 those are large ships. I love that everyone flies what they like though.

I have lost count of how many cobras I have. Multiple vipers... Loads of sidewinders lying around, tonnes of old hauler taxis. I should probably just sell a bunch of it.
