Good Railway Game?

Hiya. Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good train set simulator? The sort of thing that would allow me to construct a large virtual Hornby setup.

I'd mainly be interested in UK trains and kit. I'm not looking for scenarios or cash making, just a virtual train set.

Many thanks.

Have a look at Just Trains - Tim Stone, well-regarded simmer over at Rock Paper Shotgun did a lovely write up of the Western Mainline DLC for Train Simulator 2018 which is referenced on the Just Trains site.

Personally I quite enjoy Transport Fever, but it's not a Hornby train set game, more of a tycoon transport simulator.

Over the years I bought a few, but never found the time to play them, sorry :-(

They are collecting virtual dust kind of like my real model trains in the attic :-(

Hornby Virtual Railway 2 (PC)

Sadly no longer a thing, it seems.

I've been using this on and off for nearly 20 years:

Trainz

That looks very interesting, but wow, that price! EDIT: Looks like there's cheaper stuff, I just saw the Platinum Edition which was a bit...eye watering...!

Thanks for that. Lots to read there.

Occurs to me that Planet Coaster has a couple of trains in it's locker.
No points to change (I'll try to suggest it on the PC forum if you don't do it first) .. simulated passengers and scenery though.

Yeah, I've got PC and it's that, oddly, that made me start thinking about something similar but dedicated to trains. However, I have no interest in 'inside the cab' views, I basically just want a virtual model trainset.

Many thanks for your input guys. So far I'm sort of looking at 'Trainz' since it's (a) still current and under development, and (b) has a construction mode that looks close to what I really want...presumably there's no actual need to switch to 'in cab' mode if you don't want, ie use it in a sort of 'model trainset' mode?

However, I'll do a bit more research first.

@kilvenny: thank you for the Hornby info. It's a shame that the product is essentially unsupported and no longer developed.

@amigacooke: in your opinion, if I wanted to get into Trainz with an eye to British freight stuff (not steam, later 50's-70's era) what would be the best package? (I suspect I may be over thinking this!)

That actually does look barkingly good fun, but not quite what I had in mind :)

I've no idea why they put that amount on the portal front page, frightens off quite a few I'd guess :)

Trainz A New Era Platinum Edition ($39.99 USD) is your best bet to get started.

Some would say that a major strength of Trainz is the amount of free content that has been provided by 3rd party creators. This comes with some drawbacks

  • the quality can vary wildly
  • there have been many iterations of Trainz and content for earlier versions can be faulty in later version
The good news is that there is help

A great deal of content is on the Download Station, but that can only be used when you have a registered copy of Trainz. However, there are 3rd party sites, the one below may be of interest

TRAINZ CARRIAGE & WAGON WORKS UK

A final caution, Trainz can be endlessly fascinating, but also very irritating!

Good hunting.

Awesome, thank you. I'd rep you again but you know how it is :)

It's available on Steam as well if that's you bag.

The Steam entyries for Trainz look a tad confusing...I can't seem to see the Platinum edition (based on only 10 seconds of looking, granted!) Suspect I'll buy it from the site directly.

Is it installable on more than one machine? There's two PCs I use at home, would be nice to have it on both (although only to be used on one at a time).

Just to double confirm something: this allows you to essentially build your own tracks, yes? It's not just pre-done layouts?

Edit: Actually, TMR17 looks to be more what I'm after. I think...
