Frontier - please add the Tesla Roadster as a POI in the SOL system.

As for the complaints about "not doing science", the current phase is a proof of concept test of a "trickey" orbital manuvere through the Van Allen belt to prove that it can be done and the insturments still function. If it works, then around 22:00 EST the thrusters will reignite and send the car towards Mars.

They are also testing the performance of the space suit.

All of this is purely for testing, to collect data needed for an eventual trip to Mars.

Pretty g epic. A few people have an idea, and 15 years later their company employs 6,000 people to launch the largest rocket since the Saturn V, and land two of the three stages.

Epic.

Edit:

And for the comments about this being a publicity stunt, they are missing the fact that this was done as a celebration for the employees. Yeah, a solid concrete block for a test payload would have been sensible, but now the employees have a much cooler story to tell.

He somehow managed to make a heavy rocket launch more awesome than it already is.

You don’t see the first non-government funded (mostly) deep space launch a worthy historical event? You don’t see the first successful launch vehicle to use 27 simultaneous rocket engines to be worthy? Or is it that you don’t think the arrogant jerk who runs the company is deserving of it?

I wouldn't consider Musk arrogant. He's mostly extremely talented and rather eccentric. Despite his engineering brilliance he also happens to be terrible at business, which is why Tesla still isn't turning a profit despite having a monopoly on the high-performance electric car market. Fortunately he has enough money that he doesn't really seem to care, which I suppose is probably why he comes across as arrogant to some people.

Im half and half on it. While it would be pretty cool to see a tesla orbiting mars, however it was just a test flight for bigger plans, sending to people to mars, etc. It's not something amazing like voayger.

Why not? They already added a bunch of planets that don't exist.

Anyhoo, I turned in to the live feed today as I arrived back at the office with my lunch, just in time for the countdown. This momentous occasion will now forever be tied in my mind with a chicken sandwich from Jack in the Box.:D

Extremely talented? I doubt so.

How many other people have developed a privately-funded rocket capable of carrying a car-sized payload into space and sending it to Mars as a proof of concept?

Right, that would zero which is why it's quite a notable achievement.

Uniqueness isn't the only criteria to make it important.

Wow, just wow, so many naysayers, the main reason I rarely frequently these forum's.

Yes please to adding this to the Sol System.

Leaves forum before getting contaminated by negatively.

And...having the separated boosters fly back and simultaneously precision land on a bulls eye target, upright. It was UNBELIEVABLE. For anyone that missed it...check out the 26:30 minute mark:
