Newcomer / Intro Canopy destroyed equals certain death?

I purchased and outfitted a Vulture yesterday and rather smugly started taking on any interdictions and winning them, plus receiving a nice bounty, only added to my smugness levels. Today on my way to Leinster Ring to deliver data and a black box I was interdicted, submitted, adjusted my power to weapons and closed off a couple of modules (my FSD is set to priority 3 as is my life support*) and went into battle.

Unfortunately, still being a newbie and a super green newbie in combat terms, by the time I'd done this my opponent had got ahead of me and turned towards me. He managed to blow a hole in my canopy and despite killing him I was left to an agonising 7 1/2 minute wait for my inevitable death. It seems, I suppose rightly enough, you can't enter supercruise without a canopy. So is life support ever really worth it unless you're only a few km from a station?

How do you guys evade such an unpleasant end....or do you go and make a coffee and wait for the rebuy screen as I did?

*Perhaps this was incredibly dumb?

Well, if you switch your engine back on you can jump out to a station - 7 mins is enough time to get to a station.

That is why I don't fly Vultures any more - weak canopies ;)

Yep, dead already and now at Leinster Ring in a rebuy.

I'd powered down from supercruise for battle. My systems were still powered, running at 98% and able to give full whack with two 3C Beam Lasers. He shot out my canopy and I killed him moments later, as I went to get into supercruise it just said I was unable to do so...perhaps an issue with my FSD being priority 3?

I'm about to go and see Felicity Farseer to get the G1 Powerplant upgrade but I'm not able to go further with Engineering that yet.

It sounds like I should have been able to use supercruise with a broken canopy though?

No problem entering supercruise with a busted canopy :)

Your FSD takes around 10-15 seconds to "boot" back up once it's been switched off.

Hhhmm. I wonder if I was too keen to make assumptions...and that coffee. At least I got a discount on the rebuy.

I need to practise my combat and put some systems in place for what to do and in what order when submitting and starting a fight or outright starting a fight.

Live and learn...or rebuy and learn.

Thanks everyone

Yeah - check your modules screen next time - you can have things shot out in the fight so it's possible they sniped your FSD - in that case there's an option in the rightmost tab on the right called 'reboot and repair' which will get you home. But I think it's most likely you switched the FSD off (that's what you said you did) - no FSD, no SC*.

* As you will also find if you try and repair your FSD while in SC - which I do occasionally...

If you lose canopy regularly and like to finish your fights, may be worth an A-rated LS. I know power is scarce on the vulture, but...engineering brah.

Yes, next stop Felicity. Stop after that, whichever Engineers I can unlock.

I think thats exactly what happened. I need to get on top off my panels and options.

If you're that short on power on the Vulture (because you're using power hungry weapons or you haven't unlocked the right Engineers yet), get the A-rated life support and set it to low priority.

Yes, it'll get powered off once you deploy your weapons. So what - you still got 25 minutes to kill everything in sight and fly back to the station. That is (or was) the default solution for Vultures before Engineers.

The only other problem flying without a canopy is that the HUD does not appear where the glass is missing so you can't see your destination or distance countdown. You may have to jink around from side to side to make it appear where there are still fragments of canopy to display it. If you are heading for a station you can breathe station air as soon as you enter the slot, but if you are landing on an outpost you have to drop into the hangar, there is no air outside!

You can always synth more oxygen to completely(I Think) refill the supply. As long as you have the mats of course.

More good knowledge being shared, thanks.

The 7 1/2 minutes I had should have been plenty for me to get back to a station but that is definitely worth bearing in mind if I'm further out.

I should probably also share this here (race sadly now over) ..

Buckyball-Racing-Club-presents-The-Last-Gasp-(06-01-3304-14-01-3304)

.. and also Cmdr AkenBosch's brilliant video of the run where he came closest to not making it.

n.b. like me he's a lover of the video I posted here earlier so his re-use of the Interstellar soundtrack was a deliberate homage to that.

I love flying the Vulture, but early on I was in the same position as you, except in my case I ran out of air right outside of the station lol.

Now I consider upgrading life support on the Vulture from an "E" to anything else a requirement. Those extra minutes are priceless. I also no longer hang around if the canopy breaks :)

That said, try Synth'ing more life support next time - it's so easy to do if you have the materials, and has a very good return of 02 ;-)
