I forgot how fun Voice Attack was...

Played properly for the first time on PC for a long time today.

I forgot how cool it is to have your voice operate so many tasks.

Also, I've switched back to mouse and keyboard. It's great because VA does so much that I never have to take my paws off WASD & mouse. :)

I should probably get this, but I'm really lazy. It would be really nice for pips and utilities though.

Voice Attack, with one of the Voice Packs is truly fun. I have Verity, an O.R.I.O.N., by W. Shatner, awesome. That said, I always keep redundant keybinds and never ask VA to control crucial tasks. Even the best voice recognition software stalls out some times. I keep the commands down to: light, landing gear, and opening maps, so I don't get caught out in combat.

It must be the clarity of my voice and/or mic, but I could never get VA to be reliable enough to be worth the cpu cycles. I much prefer Roccat PowerGrid instead.

Might need to run he speech training program a few times. I had to do that as my VA had difficulty recognising what I was saying

Likewise, this is very important, because you never know when there'll be some noise outside that's just enough to throw off the voice recognition, and in th heat of combat something either totally undesirable or nothing at all happens at the worst possible moment (it always happens at the worst possible moment), plus when panicking one tends to speak much faster, which the speech engine doesn't appreciate very much.

I tried it when fairly drunk once. That didn't work either. lol. My speech is the first thing to go when I drink. I speak fluent greek, except when I'm drunk, then it sounds like someone gargling jello. :/ I'm not a big drinker fortunately. :)

I don't have a voice pack yet though, keep thinking about it.

I have seen a lot of recommendations for this, should i try it? Is it hard to setup?

Training the Windows 10 voice recognition engine is the slowest part of the whole process, and I've found that you really need a good quality mic that sits close to your face. The mic built into the oculus rift is by miles the best for this I've found, which is good because you absolutely need reliable voice command in VR.

I just purchased this today as well, mainly for use in DCS World but its super useful for ED too... Just wish it could be used to deploy your SLF easily.

I haven't used it in a while since the wife shouted "Punch it" whilst I was in a station with my gear up.
Not a very nice outcome. I can laugh about it now.
Maybe have another go sometime when she is out :)

Microphone I use is that found on the HyperX Cloud II. From my discussions with friends, I understand it's a very clear mic'.

I've not done it but fairly sure it can.

Loads of people use it to open up the left panel, go to comms and request docking so the same process should be fine for deploying the fighter.

As I am rarely in a rush to deploy the fighter - I limit my VA commands to "Attack"; "Defend"; "Dock"; "Hold Fire"; "Hold Position" and "Follow", plus another command to open the orders panel.

Yeah that's the main reason I'm using it, so I don't have to reach for the numpad in combat. That and docking requests, as you said.

Same mic! I only upgraded my HOTAS last week in preparation for getting a VR headset (eventually) and got Voice Attack set up as well.

It's a nice piece of software alright for utilities and things you don't need regularly or immediately. My personal favourite is the ability to request docking without clicking so many buttons!

Combine that with an HCS voice pack if you really want a kick. Nothing like having the same voice actor that did the ship voices, or William Shatner responding to your commands :D

Don't forget about some of the crazier stuff it can do too. Bringing up EDDB or ETN is something I've found very helpful.

Thanks for the thought - I tried this numerous times, and whilst the speech training completed okay, VA never improved.

Perhaps I should do the speech training after a few beers, much like I fly... ...hmmm!

Yeah, I got Verity, Orion, and Eli in that order. Eli is by far the most entertaining, with his constant mockery (e.g. "Open Galaxy Map" Result: "Oh look at the bright sparkly stuff! Isn't it pretty?!" or "Admit it, you're lost again, aren't you? There's no shame in that... sort of."); it's like having Q as your co-pilot - with a more adult language and a worse attitude, but no omnipotent powers. I switch back to Orion when I want a more relaxing experience, or just get tired of being mocked (e.g. "Flight assist on" resulting in "Baby-mode engaged"). I may use Verity more once 3.0 goes live and I can switch the COVAS to Viktor; it's a little weird hearing her talk twice at times - once from the COVAS, once from Voice Attack.

Still, I will never grow tired of some of Eli's insults, which lead me to use commands I would normally pass on (e.g. "Departure handover" and response "One of the best pilots in the Galaxy, huh? *%$# you!").

Oh I apologise. I should have mentioned. I already have ASTRA. :)

After doing lots of speech training, my VA is good enough to correctly interpret commands even when my voice radically changes - like when I need to cough something up or when I'm yawning.

At other times, it can still be frustrating for no apparent reason. One day, out of over a 1.5 years of using it - it decided it wouldn't recongize cruise as cruise and instead as crews. So my "Set Cruise" (2-4-0) command wouldn't work. So I went in and edited the file to accept crews as well as cruise for that command. It fixed that problem for that day, and should it ever happen again. However, it's now back to (I regularly check) to recognizing cruise as cruise. It's weird.
