Newcomer / Intro Forum Rep ettiquette

I'm pretty new to forums, in fact I only use one other and that doesn't have a Rep system.

So, what's the etiquette for Rep? As a newbie I'm getting lots of help from people - should I be repping those that give advice, those that give great advice. I have also only just realised that two people gave me a Rep point each on a thread some days ago...do you make a point of thanking people for Rep given to you or is it deemed a bit time consuming?

Apologies for what are no doubt daft questions.

Thanks

Give Rep i you like the answers, and also if you want a follow-up - people will often not look at a thread again and if you want clarification a good way is to rep them - then they get the notification that it has changed.

Also some fora rep more than others - DD denziens don't know there's even a Rep button, the aliens bunch use it a lot ;)

That's great, thanks. I had no idea it also helped people to follow up.

You get my first rep....if I'm able to give it as Mostly Harmless :)

Some people read old threads, I have had a reputation notification that lead me back to something I had posted over a year before.

I tend to rep posts as a way to applaud them the reasons for that applause vary.

One thing you will find is that there are some posters you will rep more than others this will lead you to a message saying that you can't give them any more rep until you have given more rep to other posters.

Ok, so it’s not creepy to rep a fair bit. In fact it is needed to keep rep’ing those that are often helped by, find amusing or just like what they’re doing? I think I’ve got it, I didn’t want to throw it around like I’m hoping to get it back as some sort of rank builder.

For me, a Rep is much nicer than a "Thanks" posting. That just bumps the thread, and people then waste time to revisit it just to see your "Thanks"

I Rep things I like for humor, accuracy, unusual knowledge, and agreement, especially when they are in the minority of a "discussion"

^This. Although I normally only rep when I don't have anything to add, so it's a way of signaling "I agree/like/thank/etc. that" without actually having to type anything.

Yes.

There are occasionally threads that are intended to or morph into rep fests.

I generally rep people who:

-Provide OC like art/videos or whatever that I enjoy
-Provide useful information or helpful advice
-If they provide a well balanced opinion/arguement/suggestion that considers both viewpoints and the flaws+merits of the idea*
-Made me laugh
-Misc reason that I feel merits it

*too many people here go neck deep into an opinion and argue it to the ends of the galaxy that their opinion is right even if there's tons of flaws and good counter-arguments they ignore them and just keep repeating the same opinion without any discussion/conversation. So in my small way I try to provoke people to be a bit self-concious and look at different perspectives. Don't think I've had much impact but hey-ho :)

I suppose my etiquette can be summarised as people who contribute positively to the discussions and forums.

In the end there's no real etiquette anywhere, find your own system that works and run with it. Also have a free one for asking politely because why not :)

I rep posts that I find entertaining or enlightening. And I like to spread it around. You have finite rep, so you actually have to spread it around if you want to rep the same poster for multiple posts.

Spread the love I say. :)

I particularly enjoy giving rep to posts that I DON'T agree with if they are well written/argued. Repping a person you're arguing with can really mess up their groove. ;)

Same here. Will also +Rep for humour and silly comments that make me smile when reading after a long day at work :)

Generally I guess I give it if "I approve of this post" (like it says really). So if it's useful or interesting or funny or amazing or says something I generally agree with or just answers a question I had. I tend to give out a lot on the screenshots threads ('cos 80% of those fall into the "amazing" category, even if it's FD who deserve the rep really there's still a real skill and art to setting up and taking a good screenshot). I will often give rep quite generously on the newcomer "introduce yourself" threads as long as they've taken the time to say more than "filling in mandatory n00b post". I do also very occasionally use it as a way of attempting to notify someone that I've commented on their post (i.e. I'll comment and then give the Rep) but ONLY if the general "I approve of this post" dictum pretty much applies anyway (i.e. I wouldn't use it to notify an idiot that I'd written a rebutal to something stupid they'd written). I don't bother thanking people for rep given (sorry) and am slightly surprised when they thank me for mine (that feels like saying here's my rep for your rep and that could go on all night frankly).

Edit: oh, and I'll use rep to let someone know that I'm following their regular posts if it's something cool but I have nothing pertinent to write other than "I'm still reading and this is still great". For example I'm bunging daily rep at Cmdr Nick Sticks even tho' I don't always have anything to say ..

I always message people a thankyou if they rep me, but some people's messages just list my thank yous, and I'm not sure if that's correct etiquette? lol!

I kinda don't know what to do with that lol. I get the message and appreciate it but I kinda feel like if the post deserves a rep then the giving of rep doesn't require thanks. Kinda like me saying, "thank you for that great post" and then you coming back and saying "no, thank you". Could lead to an endless chain :)

If I did this i'd have a few worries, part of me would be worried that it would imply I value rep too much. Part of me worries about the massive time sink that'd be for the 7300 odd rep I have. On the other hand part of me thinks it's kinda nice and if people didn't then the visitor messages would be empty! :p

For mainly the time aspect means I don't. I don't mind it though, it's not negative just not many people do it. In short if you want to go ahead, if not don't worry ;) <- At least thats my take on it...

Have a rep on me OP!

If you cant rep someone again and must "share the love first" people, if liking your post will post saying something along the lines of "here have a virtual +1!"
