Engineers - 5+ levels of grind...When is grind too much

The amount of pure GRIND for engineering is kind of sick.

- Do X to Unlock engineer
- Do Y for the engineer to prove you are worth talking to.
- Now grind for Z materials
- Use Z materials to increase engineer level
- Grind more materials to have materials to have high level engineering.
- Unlocks higher rated engineer....
- See point 1

That does not take the TIME required to find certain items or unlock certain engineers or the required gear at times.

What grind?

If someone has the mindset of "All these Engineers exist, therefore I must unlock them all as quickly as possible and then max out engineering on all my modules as quickly as possible" I agree it would be enough to generate queasiness.

On the flip side, if you meander through the game, doing bits and bobs here and there and go see Engineers occasionally, it feels like much more of a flow.

I've played since Freegle Day1 and am still only Combat: Expert so there are several Engineers I haven't got anywhere near. I seem to do all right with what I have so far.

Obviously I am not you and my satisfaction is not your satisfaction :)

If you start as a new player, it'll take a while to unlock all the engineers, but pretty much every Horizon owner has been through that. It's not going to be done in an afternoon improving all the modules of a ship to the theoretical maximum.

Adapt and overcome - the only other choice is to uninstall.

I've already unlocked and ranked all the Engineers apart from the 2 with the most combat oriented requirements - no real issue with that part of the process, it's a one-off thing.

My adaptation is this:
- Fit a Wake Scanner, Collector Limpets, and SRV as standard on my most used ships (Python and Anaconda).
- Scan and collect everything as you go.
- Drop into a few more USSs than before.
- Take a brief SRV joyride every other time you visit a planet.
- Periodically visit the Brokers to prevent lower grade materials from hitting the max caps.
- Occasionally do an Engineering loop, remembering to pin the blueprints you expect to use the most.

Its only grind if your not enjoying it!

Engineering isn't mandatory, maybe you should give engineering a miss?

Hmm, not quite as catchy as RNGineers.

EnGrindeers? Grindineers?

Well, I tried.

Is that still a valid statement, though?

I feel like if you play in open, they are probably mandatory. Either that or logging as soon as you see another player.

I unlocked most of the Engineers and engineered most of my ships, but I feel bad about people starting out or the ones who try to ignore engineers.

If you PvE and are not the "must have now" type, it's rather painless. Even enjoyable
for some of the unlocks.

If you are a "must have now " type of player, either for PvE or PvP (you have no choice in this case :( )
Then yeah, it's "Fifty Shades of Grind"

Damn, that could make a funy engineer meme.

Really? That 's the opposite what every PvPer tells me, which is when logging into open I agree to PvP. :(

I think they mean for the first kind of PvP, not the other kind of PvP.

And no, for the "other" kind of PvP one does not need to go full tilt on the engineers to survive. Precautionary measures & foresight are usually enough.

PVP isn't mandatory.

In other words, I'm locked out of a third of the modes of this game unless I play the grind game.

So basically, it's mandatory.

Look, guys, can we all agree to stop repeating this? If you don't spend a ton of time at the roulette table, you are at a massive disadvantage. That is a fact, and it is not up for debate.

There should be more to do than get ships and then engineering would seem more optional. As it is there’s only ships so what else ya gonna do but want to improve your ship?

The grind is as big or small as you make it.
You can carry out one, ten or a hundred upgrades. It is up to you. The more you upgrade, the better your ship.

If you don’t have the mats to hand, upgrade as far as you can. Come back later.

It is no longer the case where one upgrade will give you a mid range improvement, you grind for some materials and then every roll you make after that is worst. You have spent all the time and the outcome is zilch.

Now everything you do improves your ship.
