It Is Much More Fun Now I've Been 'Pirated'

I was doing a milk run in my Type 6, crammed full of Dover Sole, and was approaching Azeban when the phone rang and so I took off my headset and starting chatting to my daughter.

But. What's this?

My shields start lighting up. I sigh. Must have missed that interdiction, they do sometimes happen at the same time we come out of SC so I calmly boost, turn off FA and with one hand on the joystick continue my journey to the station in a kind of haphazard wobbly FA off kinda way.

I will outrun him in a minute, I thought.

Wrong. My shields keep lighting up so I power by the station, close, thinking that at some point soon I will outrun this NPC or the station will take him out. All the while I am having a complex conversation with my daughter about travel arrangements.

And so it was that Commander [redacted] shortly afterwards handed my bottom to me and I was blown to tiny bits.

I was stunned, I wasnt expecting that, life had been so easy...

But mainly I am grateful. The game has now become far more interesting. Knowing that I may now get attacked as I approach a station has certainly added an edge to the game.

I immediately restarted and did the same run again, with fresh fish, obviously.

And coming out of SC at Azeban I could see the skies were full of cargo. There was a lot of it about...

This time I am focussed. I boost, turned FA off, switch shields to max and head directly at the station.

Then in coms I get a message from Commander ZB (still on the scene, obviously), he has taken out a Lakon 9 whilst I was away, apparently. I am not good with coms, I dont know how close he is so I dont answer. I do a precision fast approach to the station and enter at speed.

I enjoyed that. Also, for me it isnt a big deal. I have plenty of credits in the bank and made back my loss immediately.

I would ask, though. that if you are going to pirate another player then please try it with the Lakons/Cobras/Bigger ships. Anyone who is flying without insurance by the time they get one of these ships needs a lesson in the importance of insurance. We can take the hit.

But leave the guys in haulers and smaller ships alone, for now. Chances are the loss will hit them harder.

But hey, do what you want, it is your game :)

I wonder why the station defences didn't fry him. I've heard them toasting NPC's for whatever reason whilst I've been inside. Gives me a fuzzy feeling of warmth.

Unless you were outside the stations defence zone?

Yes I was well outside when he attacked me initially, and as I powered by the station and into space, thinking I would outrun the 'NPC' presumably he didnt fire on me.

Honestly though, the game is much better for me now

I've heard a lot of comments just recently about people being attacked by other players en-route to the stations. It's not something I generally approve of, as in the original game the stations and the areas surrounding them were always a safe haven from the harshness of space. You took your chances out in deep space, but you knew you had a slim chance of survival if you reached a station. In a way this aspect is slowly being taken away, but if people are playing that way then so be it. but I do wonder if these sort of actions will end up forcing more and more people into the solo game.

I am quite surprised that many of them seem to be getting away with attacking others in the no-fire zones though... Have they found some sort of exploit? :S

It's really unfortunate there are those playing the game who can't seem to adopt this mentality.

I think you will go far OP.

I am pretty sure he didnt attack me in the no-fire zone. I certainly got to the no-fire zone intact. I think that if I had had my wits about me I could have got away and into the station though I am not sure. And I like that.

Okay, that's fair enough.

Just to clarify I don't have a problem with being attacked on the way to a station, so long as there's a chance that I can escape if I make it to the NFZ in once piece. The danger adds to the fun. It's when I don't have a chance and can be killed inside the NFZ, and the other player gets away with it, that things are edging towards unfair.

Glad to hear that the fish finally did get through. The People's Cooperative of Fish Shop Owners and Allied Trades salutes you sir :)

Totally agree, if I have no chance then it is pants. I think I could get to the station though, thats why I went straight back and did the journey again.

The game is so different when there is risk. So much better. I saw someone post earlier today that it is too easy to make money doing these milk runs, that you can always outrun the NPCs if you know what you are doing. Well bring on the PC pirates, that's what I say, as long as the skilful Commander has a good chance of delivering his (or her) cargo. It is these kinds of balancing acts that FD need to be on top of, so to speak.

exceept these "pirates" are just player killing to ruin your day, tthey arent getting any cargo if they are killing you....

This is kinda the reason why I've gone back to playing the original Elite and Frontier for the moment. At the moment Elite Dangerous is just a tad too easy to make money in as all I have to do is sell my weapons, put the now unused weapons energy into the engines and boost away from any NPC's that attack me. In the older games you can't do this and it keeps things interesting. Okay, in Frontier you can carry an extra ton of hydrogen fuel to hyperspace jump away from trouble if you're out-gunned, but it costs you money and when you only have 4 tons of cargo space it makes a difference.

I'm sure that with this being a beta the NPC's and AI will be tweaked.

If they're not stealing the cargo then they're not pirates but griefers.

Ah C'mon,

no self respecting griefer leaves the cargo behind.

Rather it is taken and then held ransom with the promise of 'returning' it if given a certain amount of credits *isk* by the victim.

Naturally enough, the ransom turns out to be a generous 'donation'.

i got jumped by an NPC sidewinder just as i was dropping into the station, he popped in behind me while i was about 10km out so for a laugh i turned towards him.

he started shooting so i made a beeline for the station and the security ships chased him off.

most fun i've had in ages and it shows that some part of the policing system is working correctly ;)

Flight assist off --> boost. All pips to shields.

That should get you in to the no fire zone shouldn't it?

ATM player pirates cant interdict so they have no choice but to hang around the stations.

HA HA, I got pirated by the same CMDR [redacted] today. He got me near Beagle 2. Seems he was on a rampage!

I was of course slumbering doing the same boring trade run in my naked Type 6 when my shields go down and I take some hull damage. Luckily I was right near the entrance to the station and I managed to boost my way in. He followed me in and docked. I still don't know how me managed to avoid the no fire zone.

I repaired my ship, traded and took off, only to find him already waiting for me in front of the station. He hailed me and after a short discussion I decided it was better to part with some of my cargo than lose it all. I dropped some canisters before my frameshift spooled up.

Now I check every little contact whenever I approach a station. This is how ED should be!
