Tips on playing with Oculus

Hi folks,

I'm a very casual player of Elite since beta. I have the beta season pass so have Horizons. I use a X-55 HOTAS and I've just bought an Oculus.

Game feels great in it, although I absolutely suck at it as I hardly ever play, and getting used to the new view and not seeing controls will take a while I think. :)

Anyway, I wanted to know if I could improve the look of things, like AA looks pretty bad, that streaking effect that seems common in the Oculus but worse in Elite.... or any other tips for that matter.

I've spent ages Googling but so much stuff seems out of date. I tried a few things like using the SDK to super sample but couldn't work out what to do. I was following 2 year old instructions so not sure if it's my ineptitude or old info.

Even starting Elite in VR... I read that you have to uninstall your normal version, get a key and then install from the Oculus Hub.

I launched normal Elite then noticed it had appeared in the Oculus Hub and it seems to launch fine from there. Not sure if this is the best way.

So any tips?

Like any of these for example:

Changing HUD colours to make things less blurry or streaky perhaps

Super Sampling. I have a 180Ti so hopefully can push things a bit.

A program that allows you to swap between the Oculus and a monitor while playing.

Two things.
There's a dedicated VR forum full of experts.
and
Elite is kinda neon and flarey and high contrast. So you get that.
if you're rocking a 1080 it's not going to get much better.
I roll with a 1050 and uh well overall it's a better experience than the Rick and Morty game so I just suck it up whatever the quality.

I also play on a stoopid big telly but I don't mind the cable swap and reboot.
VR is new-ish tech so I expect a bit of stuffing around with it.

Kinda hoping augmented reality kicks in before the end of the Elite "ten year plan"

Yes, jump over to the Virtual Reality sub-forum. A lot of good tips for Rift users, including some threads re graphics settings. :)

Get the ED profiler. You can changed the Hud color and all your graphic settings with that. I use light blue and the text is a lot easier to read. Link your galaxy map controls to the Hotas. Seems every week theres a new thread asking about the map and VR. The mouse doesn't work well with the headset so use the controller.

Hi,

Apologies, using a tablet and can't seem to post links at the moment. There is a VR sub forum, lots of good setup and tweaking advice over there, the mods will likely move the topic.

I also use the CV1 with a 1080TI, overclocked using MSI afterburner, CPU also custom overclocked to 4.9ghz 7700K

Bottom line is you need a lot of grunt to get good visuals in VR whilst maintaining 90 frames per second.

You can apply supersampling in game, no need for the SDK anymore.

In the ED options I currently set the following

SS (0.65)
HMD quality (2)
AA (On)
Ambient occlusion (off) This is a frame rate killer.
Blue HUD via the overide config file.

The above settings give me crystal clear visuals inside the ships, planets\stations etc look great. The only limit of the hardware in my case is small ships at long distance, things start to get a little blurry, overall it is an incredibly immersive experience

Oh another tip....I'm not at home so I can't check but I think in the SRV right hand panel theres an option that says something like Lock horizon. That's almost required for driving the SRV in VR. Good chance it will make you sick without it turned on.

That's a graphics option. But yes absolutley essential to avoid the chunder bucket!

As for OP. Mess around with settings but concentrate on keeping your frame rate good as a jerky game in VR will make you feel sick (well it makes me feel sick!). As for GUI colours I still prefer the original orange scheme but I turned the HUD brightness way down in the Right Function Panel.

The first time i nearly fell of my chair in VR, after i drove with the SRV over the cliff of a deeeeeep canyon. I don't know if i switched on the horizon lock option, but it's a great feeling in a SRV and Occulus...

I just got one in Spain, might have been lucky though. After I ordered they went out of stock, but every few days they seem to receive a couple, which fly incredibly fast. Got one right in time during one of those stock flashes...

OP, follow 777driver’s settings, and download EDProfiler!!! It makes life so much easier!

I was fortunate enough to pick one up last summer. Initially for a customer, but he said he'd be happy with my second hand 1080 which I part exchanged for a reasonable price against the new Ti.

If you can get the 1080Ti, do so. It has just enough power to play VR pretty much maxed out. I had to 1080 before than and 2 x 970 in SLI before that.

NVIDIA, in trying to push their new cards disabled VR in SLI with a driver or firmware tweak (rolling back did not reenable it). So I plunked for the 1080. It was much, much faster and less trouble than SLI and handles 4k much better than the prior generation.
However, it still required a few compromises to get the best out of the Oculus.

The Ti, however has no such problems.

Before you go, here are my three changes (using EDProfiler)

1) The main driver of Oculus output quality is the setting "HMD Image Quality". Setting it to 1.25 or 1.5 gets rid of a lot of the jaggies and crawling edges. However setting 1.5 more than doubles the stress on your card and may give rise to strange frame drops.

2) To compensate, change the Super Sampling setting down to 0.85 or 0.75. Total stress on your card is (Super Sampling * HMD Image quality)^2 so don't go crazy and set both to 2.0 or you'll end up in single digit frame rates!

3) In EDProfiler, choose a Green, VR dashboard from the colour profile list. Not only does green not give such heinous "god rays" but it also has double the resolution of Red and Blue due to the screen being Pentile.

ps. You can ignore any reference to the Oculus SDK tool or Oculus Optimiser as it its sometimes called that is obsolete for this purpose...

Not sure if I should continue this thread, but I guess they'll just move it which is cool.

You've given me some great pointers here, but I don't get a few things.

First off I got my 1080Ti last April or May I think.

777Driver, those options you mention, are they in ED Profiler or the actual game? I can't find them in game.

I downloaded and run the ED Profiler. Can I use this while game is running or does it need to be done before?

I'm fiddling about with it now but not really getting it. If I change things and apply it doesn't seem to change anything in game.

I make the adjustments manually in game, never tried the profiler.

In game you will need to click on the + signs in the graphics option, that will expand the menu in order to see the VR options

You can't change the settings on the fly, you have to exit to desktop but you do not have to close the launcher.

When you select between 2D & 3D profiles just remember to click "Apply". Someone I know didn't remember to do this and made an ENTIRE thread on how he couldn't get it to work... :rolleyes:

Ah, I needed to use the mouse. I usually use the joystick but that just opens the presets/options to the right so I thought that's what the + was for.
