Exploring is going to be amazing in Elite!

I logged in today to start a new game, I was going to do some trading and work my way to a fighter and start some missions.

Except that's not what happened - I took my basic sidewinder and thought 'I'll just check out this new system..' Four and a half hours later I'd done nothing but buy fuel and explore - and some of the sights are amazing - even in its Beta the galaxy is already stunning.

I just thought I'd share - combat is not the only thing that's great about Elite!

:)

Yeah its great, one of my favorite things to do right now is see as much as i can and check the star types and open a wiki page to show me some info on the star type etc. Its just great fun living in this universe and im not concerned one bit with wealth or the biggest guns or whatever. Just being here and enjoying the sight from the cockpit of a type 6 is enough for me :)

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I agree.

It was back in Alpha, I think, but I remember the first time I super cruised over a planetary ring system my jaw just dropped. Seeing the ring resolve into individual particles as I approached, and then skimmed over the top.... just wonderful.

Even now, after having played the game a bunch in the past year, I find myself awed by the 'popping out of hyperspace in front of the star', in hearing my engines roar to life as I accelerate, and when I just gaze out at the stars and the realization hits me that I'm not just looking at a static skybox - each of those little points of light is a 'real' destination that I can go to!

It's a really amazing game for sure.

It's better than amazing it's the best! When this is all fully fleshed out with features this game will be the death of my career and everything else in between.

Definitely already great fun to explore. My favourite thing is to swing by the planet a station orbits on my way to it and have a close look. Plus USS encounters in close proximity to planets look amazing.

Been doing that as well, great fun. Couldn't be bothered with trading proper so I spent some time zooming around exploring the USS and some of the systems.

Now, has anyone managed to trigger any interesting missions in Bolg?
I wondered if there was a clue in its description in the galaxy map, but no joy yet.

I hope that if there is another round of beta testing fuel scoops become available. I think the key to exploration (especially beyond habited space) is self sufficiency so being able to scoop gas giants will be key. Given that I never tried this in FFE, getting practice in during the beta so my character history is not trashed would be nice.

This.

There's no limit to how far you can go, if you can resupply your fuel anywhere.

Yes but don't venture too far lest you stir a Thargoid's next or run into some secret military operation at which point....

Wouldn't be great if ED had links to wikipedia article on the stars.

Well there is a limit, the ship will suffer wear and tear will in the final game. An in deep space isn't know space stations to dock and get repairs and for that matter it may take a while before rescue units reach you as well.

We bring our own limitations to the almost unlimited universe. As opposed to carrying all our ambitions to the shoebox confinement of most modern games. This is a sequel to Elite, for sure.

Actually all your systems take damage so at some point you'll need to get them repaired.

There's a repair module somewhere (or intends to be) but that needs "ammo" so once that runs out...

David has commented that stars and gas giants may even give different qualities of fuel so that one star type will give you a better range than others.

Wether or not this is coming soon or is on a wishlist for later it shows that there is a lot of thought being put into the game and there is still a lot to come.

Also the Kickstarter had a reward tier of a "long range" cobra so I geuss there will be bigger fuel tanks etc coming.

Some Newbie/Old timer questions - have ordered beta test, but still in processing :(

I played Elite way back on a 48K Spectrum, then an Amiga (wow, GFX in colour, not just wireframes!)

With thousands (and later too be millions/billions) of star systems is there any repetition? OK, storage and processing power has expanded a million times since 1984, but do all the systems look different? Are they all binary star systems with one planet orbiting one sun? If there are suns with several planets in orbit; are there multiple space stations in in some systems?

Can I still use the old (30 years) trick of lining up with the docking bay entrance and then pushing the pedal to the metal? (And hoping I trigger the docking sequence before my ship is blown to pieces?)

More than anything Elite surprised me, which is a a rare thing these days.

When I joined Premium Beta I just grinded to a Hauler with the intent to work up to a Cobra for combat practice.
I really did not stop to have a 'look around' and frankly I should have.

I really do urge other players to explore a bit - take a good look at what Frontier have made for us - it's spectacular.

That said.. If I see any bloodey Thargoids I'll be back to my old ways real quick! :D

Given the mountains of free astronomical data available to be imported as locations in the game, there are some things that should just be jaw-dropping to visit. If there's just one graphical bit of eye candy I could wish for beyond the stars and planets themselves, it would be the various nebulae around the galaxy that would become visible and grow larger as you jumped to stars nearer and nearer to them. The Pleiades are a good example, but also planetary nebulae like the Helix and Ring Nebulae.

Trust in David Braben and the crew's ambitions are all the reason I need to hang on no matter the final state of the game.
