Am I doing this right? [COMBAT]

I used to reverse my way through asteroid fields with my 6km range beams and snipe conda's.
NPC just don't know what to do in that situation.

Check out the approach at the 1:00 mark.
That's pretty ideal positioning if you can maintain that.
I generally try to get there then circle strafe as the enemy moves.

I am a pretty poor pilot in battle.

But today's spreading of equality demanded some interception. So I fought.

Am I right in thinking that the use of reverse thrust is just as important as forward? If so then this is a valuable lesson, as I've always had the bad habit of treating spaceships like fighter planes, with no ability to reverse.

I suffered in combat for a bit too and for the same reasons. Here's what my solutions were (All vs. NPC, not PVP):
1. Early in career do not submit to an interdiction until having at least a Cobra III well outfitted with A class shields and good weapons. Until then If you lose interdiction mini-game then boost and supercruise out of the fight with 4 pips to shields and 2 to engines.
2. Do not fight high end ships with your low ender. In a Cobra you can fight most smaller ships but not FerDeLance, Python and certainly not Anacondas-NO!
3. Once you can afford a well outfitted Vulture start submitting and fighting. A decent Anaconda will still beat you if you're a beginner at combat but you'll learn in a ship that can take a punch and give one too. Against most other ships your Vulture will win the fight.
4. Start using Flight Assist OFF in battle. For the first few times do it in battles where you have some advantage ship-wise to learn how your ship behaves without the high risk. After a few combat spins in OFF mode I now love this and can stay on target against my foe in any ship to ship battle. In short time you can beat an Anaconda with a Python, Vulture or FDL rather easily.
I beat Pythons and Vultures in my ASPX now after mastering Flight Assist OFF mode in combat. Simply put you can stay on target SO much easier in this mode it's amazing.

But.. you are suggesting just the opposite to everyone else..

If you can't fight a python in a cobra (of course you can) then.. what kind of suggestion is 'fight the interdiction'??

But, you know you can submit to avoid the combat too?? that has been suggested to death.. Also, good luck fighting an Elite -anything- with just a vulture, not just a decent anaconda.

Correct, just that easy, you wake up one morning and boom, killing Elite military pythons with an ASPX just doing FA Off bossted turns..

You have to me kidding me.

Reverse is really good when you have a pesky small ship that's constantly turning faster than you are. Go into reverse and they end up chasing you while you shoot at them! ( it helps if you bind 50% forward and 50% reverse to keys)
Its also really useful when you enter a station without asking permission!!!!!

That lower diagram...

Worthy of note: With horizontal strafe you can overcome poor yaw performance by using pitch to keep the target in front of you and, you end up drifting backwards after a while, perfect time to hit reverse, when you're already falling that way ;)

Edit: Doh! :p That should have been vertical strafe, using up or downward thrust, depending on which guns you are trying to keep on the target, and tilting the nose up or down. The Chieftain has surprisingly quick yaw, as does the Type-7...

I find myself using my Corvette "sideways" so can I pitch and vertical thrust to circle; way tighter.

I do a reverse, pitch and lateral assisted pitch sometimes in an anaconda to keep things in front of me. I don't stay in reverse, though. I don't think the maneuver is appropriate for all ships either.

Ah wait, I think I stuffed up. Did I really mean vertical there? :p

About the only time I use reverski is if I can't keep some dumb elite eagle in my sights and I'm flying a much less maneuverable ship. But throttle control IS very important in combat. Don't just leave it in the middle all the time.
