General / Off-Topic Researching to find out, which SVOD service is the most popular in the UK

The problem is that many platforms such as Spotify are good for the consumer, and large labels with huge back catalogues, but pretty disastrous for young artists. While the industry needed to move, I hope the general public also comes to accept that 'all music in the world for a tenner' isnt a sustainable format either.

Agreed.

That’s true to an extent about Spotify, but that service reaches a far far wider market than ever before. A local band has a far greater possibility for coverage.

Pros and cons, but it’s better people pay a tenner than nothing at all.

Except that those local bands dont actually get the tenner. Or a penny. This 'coverage' or exposure stuff is really odd; nobody would accept it for a 'normal' job, so why bring it up in this context? None of us would be willing to regularly work for free, but we expect photographers, musicians, painters etc to do stuff pretty much for free or even at cost to 'work on their portfolio' and 'get a chance for exposure'. Its pretty dubious.

And 'its better to pay a tenner than nothing at all' is on the same level as 'its better to steal from the elderly than kill them.'. Its true, but not much of a moral argument. ;)

Thanks to all those, who have participated in completing this questionnaire.

I have enough responses now to get on with the second questionnaire.

This questionnaire will still be active until the end of February if anyone else wants to participate, but if you only do one questionnaire a year; spend that time on the second questionnaire instead. :)

Although this thread is going off-tangent, here is an info-graphic from 2017, of how much music artists make from streaming services.

Ha, cool, thanks for sharing. Over 300k plays on spotify for minimum wage is somewhat hilarious though, and I am not sure if they factored in the actual costs of recording an album in the first place.

As for how much Spotify pays the industry, its worth keeping in mind that Spotify belongs to the industry, and also pays itself via 'spotify bands'. :)

i would say i'm glad so many people recently seems to enjoy the koolaid so the entertainment industry lobbies have eased a bit their attack on basic rights like freedom of expression and information. those buttholes just needed to adapt, was it that hard? unfortunately they are not the only enemy.

but you guys should stop embarrassing yourselves by calling it 'pirating', show some dignity.
